In disappointing news, ABC has decided not to grant a series order for Football Wives, instead picking up seven other drama pilots (Big Shots [formerly Perfect Gentlemen], Cashmere Mafia, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies and Women's Murder Club).

Apparently the budget was too high to justify a pick-up.

Still, there is hope. Football Wives is likely to be optioned for mid-season. This happened last year with three ABC pilots: Secrets of a Small Town, A House Divided and October Road. And, of course, the latter went on to be picked up and has become a huge hit for the network, having just been granted a second season.

More on the ABC pick-ups can be found over at The Futon Critic, the article is here.

From what I understand, the real truth of it is that the NFL let their unhappiness over the show be known and ABC caved to the pressure. It's a real shame, but hopefully they'll shop it around and it gets picked up by a network with some backbone.

Several sources say that the show was not picked up because the NFL bulled Disney into pulling the plug. They did not like the way it depicted NFL players
