I remember seeing this episode when TV Land aired it in the 1990s, with some fanfare. Paul Hartman plays a kindly but "officious" (that is an important word in the episode's plot) old school crossguard who runs afoul of the local PTA president when he reprimands her for for careless driving at the crosswalk. When he is anonymously accused of what is essentially pedophelia, he is dismissed from his job and branded as a dirty old man. His daughter has a boyfriend (George Peppard) who is the real hero of the story, as he goes to bat for the old man, and takes up the investigation into the accusation's source. The initial target of his probe is the PTA president. Meanwhile, a local woman who remembers the crossguard from another town during her school days fears that he will expose her for an act of youthful indiscretion. Could she be the one spreading the ugly rumors? It is not about idle gossip, but carefully orchestrated character assassination.
