Episode Summary

EDIT
Nick's feelings of responsibility for the death of a man he was supposed to protect in a "sting" operation cause him to lie about actually seeing the murderer pull the trigger. In addition to the problem of having to appear in court to testify in broad daylight, Nick's desire to see justice done struggles with his conscience. He calls up memories of an incident from the past in which a woman gives false testimony in court, condemning to death a man Nick knows to be innocent, since he saw his fellow vampire Janette commit the crime.moreless

  • Nick's lie about witnessing a murder brings back unpleasant memories from his sorta-evil past.

I really wanted to like this episode, but I knew right away when Nick lied, that it was going to be bad. I never believed that he would have told that lie just to convict the guy. It did not ring true for the character at all. And of course, I was right, because the rest of the episode is about how bad he feels about lying and how he tries to fix it.

The flashback sequences were probably better than the present-day ones, showing a time when he tried to tell the truth and could not save a man from being convicted. However, I really did not care at all for most of the scenes with Schkenke, he was too annoying in the episode.

I also thought the "drama" about him testifying during the day and how someone opens the blinds in the courtroom, and then we see the sun creeping across the desk towards Nick was very overdone and not the effect that they wanted. At least Nick gets the bad guys at the end, using his brain and not lying, but overall a very weak episode.moreless

    • Nick: (to Schanke) If I could tap into your nervous energy I could light up a whole city.

    • Schanke: Since we're partners I'll give you the short version.
Nick: Who says you're not merciful?

    • Schanke: I never went for those tan guys. Who's the guy who did that vampire movie? He used to date Lyndon Johnson's daughter... something Bird? Hamilton. George Hamilton, that's what it was. A tan vampire! Now there's a jerk!

    • (while searching a pornographer's office)
      Nick: Anyone find anything?
Schanke: Some interesting material, but so far nothing to do with Betty Gilroy.
      Nick: Keep looking.
Schanke: Why, someone you know having a bachelor party aboard a fully manned nuclear sub?

    • Schanke: Nice suit, Captain.
Stonetree: Thanks. My son made it.

  • NOTES (0)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Nick: It's about a 40-foot gorilla!
This is an allusion to the movie King Kong, whose "star" is a gigantic gorilla. There have been several movie versions of King Kong throughout the years.

    • Schanke: It's either that or I've got the Six Million Dollar Man for a partner.
The Six Million Dollar Man was a 1970s television series starring Lee Majors as a man who had parts of his body replaced with bionic implants, which caused him to do extraordinary things.
