The race started cleanly but the safety car made an appearance on lap 1 after Christian Albers rolled his car across the gravel trap, but emerged unhurt.

After the first round of pit stops it became clear that Michael's car was not doing well as he dropped off the pace dramatically and found Alonso suddenly right behind him. Alonso played it safe and Renault opted to bring him slightly earlier than scheduled, a ploy that would ultimately not pay off.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen had uneventful races, taking 3rd. and 5th. places respectively with Felipe Massa in between them in 4th.

Jenson Button failed to live up to the promise of Honda when he attempted to leave his pit with fuel hose attached. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but the delay put paid to any chance he might have had.moreless
  • Well is was really painful to watch until we got to the last 20 laps.

Imola was just hard to watch for me as Kimi Raikkonen fell back tp places at the start from 8th to 10th. The first lap in general was a bit crazy as a Midland car rolled off the track. As the first set of stops began things looked a bit better for Kimi and then after his one he was back out somewhere between 8th and 10th places, but the main focus of the race at this time was the top three runners Michael Schumacher, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso. When the second round of pit stops began things looked much better for Raikkonen as moved up to 3rd at the end of them, some of the biggest things in the second pits included Buttons crazy pit stop where it was mad, which cost him dearly and the tactical change by Renault to pit Alonso, backfired right in their face when Michael Shumacher took the lead by making it ahead of Fernando leaving the pit lane, ironically for Alonso this was the exact same situation last year but it was him who was winning with Michael chasing him. When it came to Kimi's stop he came back to 5th and wasn't able to pass Felipe Massa. All in all it was a good race in McLaren's view as Alonso got 2nd, helping to keep his lead from growing to big and Montoya managed to get a podium.moreless

    • The design of the San Marino track incorporates 16 corners (10 left and six right-handers) with a 237 metre long start/finish straight.

    • The 1st world championship race to be held at Imola was the 1980 Italian Grand Prix. Since then the race has been known as the San Marino Grand Prix.

    • Imola is one of only three anti-clockwise circuits on the F1 calendar. Interlagos and Istanbul are the other two.

    • The Imola circuit's full name is the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. It was originally named after just Dino, Enzo Ferrari's son who died of leukaemia in 1956, but the Commedatore's name was added following his death in 1988.

    • The 1982 San Marino GP was boycotted by most British-based teams because of an argument between the sport's governing body FISA and Bernie Ecclestone's FOCA alliance of constructors.

    • Ferrari went 15 years without a victory at Imola. This was between 1983 and 1999 - Michael Schumacher ended the drought and has won in all but two of the subsequent years.

    • Ralf Schumacher claimed his maiden F1 win at this track in 2001, with Williams.

    • The 2003 victory for Michael Schumacher at this track was poignant for him as it came just the day after the death of his mother.

    • Michael Schumacher is the most successful driver at Imola, with a total of six wins, including three of the last four years' events. A Schumacher has been on the top podium here every year from 1999 to 2005 as Michael's winning run was broken temporarily in 2001 by brother Ralf (his maiden F1 win). Alonso won the even in 2005 when he beat Michael to the flag by just two tenths of a second.

    • After examining video footage of the Ide/Alberst first-lap crash, the race stewards reprimanded Ide and released the following statement, warning Ide against further transgressions. Stewards: The competitor is to be reminded of the possible effect of incurring a second reprimand.

    • Michael Schumacher: (on winning the 2006 San Marino GP) I am very happy! The result shows that work pays off and that the effort put in by everyone - the team and our partners - has delivered its reward. The key moment was staying ahead after the second pit stop. As we saw last year, overtaking at this track it's almost impossible, unless the guy in front makes a mistake. With all my years of experience, I knew that what I wanted to do was keep Alonso behind me, but at my pace, not pushing flat out and that's what I did. At this time I had a bit of graining, as had been the case in free practice and now we must work out what caused it. I hope we can keep up this standard in the coming races and I think that from now on, we will be very competitive.

    • Fernando Alonso: (on finishing 2nd in the 2006 San Marino GP) Second place and eight points is a perfect result for me this afternoon. We suspected that we had qualified with more fuel than the others, and the race showed we were right to pick that strategy. At a normal circuit, we could have won but this is Imola where overtaking is almost impossible. I could see that I was much faster than Michael in the second stint, and I was just trying to put pressure on him, hoping he would make a mistake. We did not plan to make our second stop when we did - we pitted early to try and overtake him but it didn't quite work. So I stayed in his slipstream and in the last five laps, put all the revs on the engine and tried to overtake. But the Ferrari was a lot quicker again at the end, and it didn't happen. Looking at the championship, though, this is perfect. My closest rivals at the start of the weekend were Fisichella and Raikkonen, and I have taken points from both of them. I am happy with this, and I know we will be stronger again in the Nurburgring.

    • Juan Pablo Montoya: (on finishing 3rd in the 2006 San Marino GP) I'm pleased with today's race and that we managed to get a podium position and some important Championship points. I made a good start off the line but was squeezed by traffic going into the first chicane and had to lift in order to avoid an incident. I then got stuck in traffic which cost me some time. I think it was clear as the race progressed that we had qualified on quite a heavy fuel load, but we were really able to take advantage of our strategy during the race. The guys did a great job in the pit stops which helped, but once I was in clear air the leaders were already about 13 seconds ahead, and it was too late for me. The focus was then just to bring the car back and get third place and some points. Everybody has been working hard for the past couple of weeks, and I think we have definitely made some progress with our package, I can't wait for the rest of the season and hopefully winning some races soon.

    • Christijan Albers: (on his collision with Yuji Ide) You know you can expect this... The problem is that the Super Aguris are missing some speed and we of course are missing some speed against the other ones, but they try to make everything good on the first lap in the first corner and this is it what happens.... It is really a shame....But the important thing is that we really have to work on our starts now to be sure that we are safe from this... It was really a surprise. You know they are always trying to search out a little space to go in [and pass] and I think sometimes there is too much risk.

    • Michael: (on his record breaking pole position) Well, the record is less important in a way. You look at it once you finish your racing and you may think about it, it was a little bit of a mixed feeling. But being here, as an ambassador in San Marino, in front of the tifosi, after all the pain of the last few weeks, is great.

    • Giancarlo Fisichella: (his perspective of Imola) You need to be good in every area to be quick there, you must have a complete car. The drivers need to have confidence in the handling and the reactions, the right tyres and a strong engine. We have a mix of slow and fast corners, plus of course you need to attack the kerbs very aggressively - and the car needs to cope with that.
