Four Star Playhouse

Show Summary

The idea behind Four Star Playhouse was that four big-name actors would take turns on alternating weeks starring in a drama; more "bang for the buck", star-wise, without obligating the actors to a restrictive weekly schedule. The four stars were Dick Powell, David Niven, Charles Boyer, and Ida Lupino. (Originally it was to be Dick Powell, Charles Boyer, Joel McCrea and Rosalind Russell).

During its first year, Four Star was on alternate weeks, sharing its time spot with Amos 'n Andy. During the second season, the series began airing weekly. As the series continued, Dick Powell introduced a recurring character, Willie Dante, owner of Dante's restaurant and nightclub. He had a tendency to become involved with shady women and underworld figures.
