This was a brilliant episode, the sort of multi-layered, multi-textured story that "Foyle's War" does so well. Once again, the question of what sort of new world will come out of the chaos of war is posed without sentimentality, and once more the answer that is implied is a deeply unsettling one. For black G.I.s at the American base, old prejudices remain, old resentments still fester; and the racism they must endure becomes in turn a seemingly perfect cover for, first, crime and, second, murder. The unwavering decency of D.C.S. Foyle - here working with a new assistant to replace the promoted Paul Milner - finally wins through, but at a heavy price. One of the best-ever episodes of a fine series.moreless
