ITV's ridiculous treatemnt of "Foyle's War", its most distinguished drama series since the heyday of "Inspector Morse", has rebounded on it. Following instructions that the show be cancelled, the previous series jumped from 1943 to the spring of 1945 and V-E Day, finishing with Foyle contemplating retirement and Milner getting promotion. Having rounded things off nicely, series creator Anthony Horowitz now has to start things up again, for his ITV bosses (in response to public outcry) have, rather late in the day, rescinded their cancellation. One rather feared what would result, for both "Morse" and the earlier "Sherlock Holmes" series were ruined by ITV by being kept going too long. But "The Russian House" was a superb episode, a sobering reminder that the end of war in Europe created all kinds of new problems. Will newly-promoted Milner and his former mentor now clash? Horowitz makes us want to keep watching.
