  • Frasier's first fling of the 11-year series....

One of the many highpoints of the first season of Frasier, "Call Me Irresponsible" sees Frasier dating for the first time since Lilith and his divorce. A very well written episode with one guffaw after another, Frasier tells the pig-headed caller Marco to dump his girlfriend Catherine when Marco said that he was only staying with Catherine "until someone better came along." Naturally, Catherine was not so happy with Frasier - but instead of the two of them going at each other's throats (well, they do until Catherine is fully briefed on Frasier and Marco's conversation), Frasier and Catherine strike up a romance. But as things seem as if they could not be better on paper, Frasier's intractable ethics begin to haunt him.... to hilarious results.

"Call Me Irresponsible" is a perfect example of what makes Frasier work so well: the story is set-up very well at the radio station, Frasier gets involved with a girl, Niles and Martin try to help Frasier through the problem, and Frasier manages to hilariously screw things up all by himself. Formulaic? Yes, but this episode is one of the first to set the formula. Hilarious? Oh yeah - "Call Me Irresponsible" is one of the best Frasier episodes ever. Frasier and Niles have a particularly wonderful by-play in this episode. The best scene of the episode is when it becomes known that Frasier gets stomach issues and Niles gets nose bleeds when either of them do something unethical (Niles' nose bleeding pops up many times throughout the series after this episode) with Frasier and Niles recalling the time they "left a gruesome trail to the tree house" when they did some petty thievery at home as children. Liar Liar's Amanda Donohoe co-stars as Catherine and is one of the best guest stars of the series - the episode should have been called "Call Her Irresistible."
