(Dr. Shaw returns from Martin's bedroom after analyzing Eddie)
Dr. Shaw: I have my diagnosis.
Frasier: Finally, the white smoke.
Frasier is referring to the Papal Conclave, the process by which a new Pope is elected. Cardinals from all over the world are sequestered in the Sistine Chapel until they've elected a new Pope. If, after a ballot, there are insufficient votes for election, the ballots are burned with wet straw in a small stove and black smoke rises from a chimney where the assembled faithful can witness it. If, on the other hand, a new Pope is elected, the ballots are burned alone and white smoke rises from the chimney.
