    I just want to know what Niles and Martin were doing with the paint and the table. Obviously staining it, but it is usually something cute that has to do with it . This seems pretty much straight out, and they dome out and tell you, never, in this part, but I don't get their gist of their subtlety

    I think they were restoring it. Martin found it on the side of the road and probably wanted to fix it up before making any modifications to it.
