Question for hard-core Frasier fans: I remember reading somewhere over the years that the creators/producers of Frasier never intended for this flirtation between Niles and Daphne to develop into something serious. Yet, Lifetime is now at the very first episodes of the series and from the first time they meet, he shows his intense attraction to her. I mean, David Hyde Pierce might have exaggerated the physical comedy aspects of it but it's right there in the script, I don't think he was ad-libbing.

So, does anyone know about this relationship, whether the creators intended Niles to fall for Daphne or whether it was just the chemistry between the actors that led them to push this angle further than originally intended?

It was apparently Jane Leeves' idea that Niles should get a thing for Daphne. Maybe JL had a crush on DHP or something!

(Just wondering) Where did you hear that?

I heard the explanation for this in the behind the scenes commentary on one of the DVD sets. Apparently, they were brainstorming what humorous reaction Niles could have upon first meeting Daphne, and then they thought -- what if he has a little crush on her? That would be funny! And that's how it all began... I guess it evolved from there because audiences really liked the prospect of a Niles & Daphne relationship. I'm glad that it did -- I thought it was a brilliant storyline and that they made a perfect couple!

Sorry, I don't have the inside "skinny" on that question, but the idea turned out to be a good one if you ask me. If your time permits, continue watching their "relationship". Then, watch the episode that ends with Daphne's "proposal" to Niles. The look on his face, and his response to that request... you may not appreciate those few minutes of tape until you've watched the other episodes.

Well whether they intended for Nile and Daphne to end up together or not I'm really glad they did. They were a wonderful couple and I was so pleased to see them end up together. Their relationship was fun and fantastic to watch, especially as it evolved from season to season. They got together, got engaged, eventually got married and had a child together. I loved it, over the seasons of Frasier I felt like it needed a stable long lasting couple. It was kind of the one thing the show didn't have before Niles and Daphne.
