  • Spare in production, this episode is excellent at establishing character relationships that will work well for the program for many years.

Frasier and his brother sit down for a visit at the upscale coffee shop.

There were a lot of things that put me off the formula of "Frasier" the first year, one of the biggest was that the Martin character really didn't seem to blend well with what we knew of Frasier on "Cheers". This strongly-written episode at least sets a new paradigm and is important for setting a tone for the series.

Frasier and Niles DO work well, and the format here - real-time conversation among the two is great for bringing out the laughs and cementing the priggish nature of their personalities. Most of the observations are really pithy and the gag of Frasier never being happy with his coffee is well-done and anchors the changing facets of the dialog.

In some ways, there were often too many characters introduced in the course of "Frasier", this episode is good at focusing on one of the two or three interactions that are very successful. In a way, this episode is also a good one to end the first season on, it is reassuring that there is something here worth coming back to.
