  • "So, what happens when your nibs explode?"....

    7.5
Martin Crane is getting ready for his new job as a security officer. With every button he snaps on his jacket, as he adjusts his badge, as he secures his hat on top of his head, Martin recalls what happened the last time he worked on the police force.

"The Return Of Martin Crane" is not a great episode of Frasier but it is good. Martin is the focus of this episode - both in the flashbacks of his last day as a cop and in the real time of the episode - but the episode does feature a fun little spat between Frasier, Niles, Roz, and Daphne about who will take Martin's dog Eddie out at 10 pm when all of them have plans that evening. This episode devotes more time for the development of Martin, rather than for laughs, so you have to be in the right mood to select the episode "The Return Of Martin Crane" on disc one of the Frasier season nine DVD set.moreless
  • Martin starts his new job as a security guard.

    10
Martin reflects on his last days of being a cop, while on his way to his new job, which happens to be a security guard position.

Niles of course is not too thrilled about the fact that his father is putting on the old badge again, but Martin assures him that everything will be alright.

A scene is shown when Marty is in the hospital after being shot and Niles telling him that he was afraid that something like this was going to happen, Martin tells him it comes with being a cop.

I liked the interaction between Niles and Martin in this one, Niles showed that he never really cared for his father being a cop.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Martin is carrying several ties and asks for help picking out a Navy blue one to wear with his uniform. Niles says he'll help and takes the ties from him. Although the ties are never again dealt with, Martin suddenly has a Navy blue clip-on in his hand.

    • About 14 minutes into the episode, Martin is putting the final touches on his uniform in the mirror. The scene apparently required John Mahoney to finish up and then think back to the day he was shot. Clearly, however, he can't get the name tag attached to his pocket in time, so just holds it on with his finger as the scene dissolves to the flashback.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Niles: (after entering a diner where Martin is eating with his partner Frank and being greeted by the both of them, and beginning to wipe his chair down as usual) You know very well what's up, Maris just called me; you booted her car.
Martin: Nonchalantly Oh yeah, I remember having a car booted earlier, it was parked kinda close to a hydrant. Was that hers?
Niles: (Angrily) The license plate says 'Maris'?
Martin: It's a very common name, right Frank?
Frank: My mother's name is Maris.
Niles: (He looks at Frank suspiciously) Dad, Maris is very upset... can't believe you booted her.
Martin: Hey, I wouldn't be upset if you booted her!
(Martin and Frank both laugh as they slap hands under the table)

    • Frasier: (in Martin's room, explaining to everyone why Eddie can't be walked right then) Apparently his nibs will explode if he doesn't go out around ten.
Daphne: (later, as she's leaving Martin's room) So, what happens when your nibs explode?

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • The title is a reference to the 1983 French film The Return of Martin Guerre, which deals with a man returning to his home after years at war and no one recognizes him.
