Freddie competes in the national spelling bee, and wins but is disqualified when he is accused of cheating, when a tape shows Frasier mouthing the words to Freddie's final word.

Both Frasier and Freddie attend the banquet anyway, but Freddie plans on getting even when he punches the kid who ended up getting the trophy, in the mouth.

So after receiving one too many insults Freddie challenges Warren to a spell of in the parking lot.

Niles even tells a tale of what an excellent speller he is, and that he chocked at the national spelling bee once.

The episode shows that cheaters never win, epically when the cheaters are really the losers just sore ones.moreless

War of the Words was one of the most hilarious episodes I have ever seen from any show.

In this episode Frederick is practicing for the National spelling bee. Then is told by Frasier that Niles was also in the National spelling bee, but didn't win because during the last word he walked off stage; Frasier is telling this story like it's some sort of tragedy in that "Frasier" story telling way that makes everything so funny. Then comes the Spelling Bee and Frederick is up agaisnt this other kid to win the Bee, and this other kid is the child of the father Frasier had condecending words with earlier. Frederick while spelling the last word you see Frasier in the Audience mouthing the letters all proud like. Well, Frederick takes home the trophy and the chairman of the Spelling Bee shows up at their party with bad news. He's there with a tape showing Frasier mouthing the letters, which is against the rules, and the chairman was notified by that father of Frederick's opponent that doesn't really care for Frasier. Towards the end of the show all the kids that were in the Bee go the National Spelling Bee dinner and Frederick and that kid get in a fight off screen, then that kids father and Frasier get in a verbal fight which leads everyone outside to witness a SPELLOFF!!!!! (fight club style) Anyways, this is were Niles says the funniest effing thing I have ever heard him say. Watch it you'll love it!moreless

  The episode title is a reference to the the book War of the Worlds, writen by H.G Wells which was later made into a film in 1953 "The War of the Worlds", which would be remade in 2005 starring Tom Cruise, "War of the Worlds".
