The title of this episode refers to the character Edith Keeler from the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever." Played by Joan Collins, Edith Keeler was a peace activist in the past who was saved by a time travelling Dr. McCoy. Because she lived, her activism had time to sway many people and she delayed the US entry into World War II which in turn led to a Nazi victory and created a timeline in which the Federation and the Enterprise did not exist. Kirk and Spock had to travel back as well and prevent McCoy from saving her life, thus restoring the original timeline.
