Lyla and Tyra are asked by Tami to run the annual Pantherama. Matt wants his cake and he wants to eat it too when he is fond over his grandma's caretaker and his new girlfriend. After a trio of great episodes that really caught my attention, the show seems to be returning to its tendency to throw a slew of plots on top of each other, not caring how well they blend with one another. There were some great moments here but also some pretty lame ones. It seems as if the writers are going to be embracing all of the plots that I hoped they weren't going to.

It's a shame too, because the show seemed to be finding its groove. However, I can't be on board with a show that's going to have Matt probably hooking up with his nurse, Julie potentially getting involved with a teacher, Tami flirting with a weird science teacher named Glen and Riggins living with a guy who owns ferrets. It just seems absurd.

The show just doesn't seem to know how to use its characters right now. I want to see the good stuff coming back, maybe some nice Jason scenes or some influential football stuff. It sounds a bit broad to be asking these things, especially because the show than just about that stuff, but I don't know.. it feels like something's missing.

I do like the idea of Smash having people visit and call him for recruitment. It's the next logical step for his character, and with his cockiness and his past mishaps with Matt Saracen. I also am starting to grow onto this Santiago character. I wasn't sure that Santiago would be the most interesting character, but as a result, Brad Leland is giving some of his best work and we're getting a potential new character out of it. I'm not sure how well he'll mesh right now, but there's a chance.

As for the Landry stuff, there's not much going on. Just the usual guilt feelings for what he did. Right now, the show needs to get its focus back.moreless

The Pantherama event takes center stage but it never feels important. Buddy's loneliness forces him to make a compelling decision.

I don't have a whole lot to say about this episode that is directly related to the plot. With the exception of Buddy Garrity's compelling decision to put his heart on his sleeve for Santiago, the story was fairly stale. Riggins and Tyra's relationship does not appear to have changed much. The Taylor family continues with its troubles. But Eric and Tammy do help Buddy make sure his decision isn't based solely on his loneliness and love for the Panthers. The Pantherama celebration felt like a stunt from The OC and I was slightly offended by the sexist treatment the team received by Lyla and Tyra. As an aside, imagine if the football team put together a skit for the cheerleaders that involved them wearing only their underwear and maybe even using some props. That would cause an uproar. But this is not a soapbox.

I did enjoy the brief moment between Smash's mom and Coach Taylor and the follow up scene with Smash in the diner. Coach Talor's remarks about him and his father butting heads shows a deep connection between the two. Smash knows that if his father was around, they too would clash over handling Smash's recruiting. The episode had a few choice moments that demonstrate why the series one of the best on television. But overall, it was not as worthwhile.moreless

The arc of the scouts comes to an almost close in this episode, and so does my anxiousness about whether or not Smash (Gaius Charles) is going to go to the college that he wants. I am really proud of him. Shelley (guest star Jessalyn Gilsig) continues to get on Tami's (Connie Britton) and Eric's (Kyle Chandler) nerves. But i love Shelley and i love Jessalyn Gilsig (also known as Meredith Gordon in Heroes). Poor Julie (Aimee Teegarden) with Matt (Zach Gilford) getting a new girlfriend Lauren (guest star Kim Smith). I felt horrible, and still love Mulie (Matt and Julie). But how about Carlotta (guest star Danielle Alonso) and Matt. Come on Matt, get some! Sorry! But the best part of the episode was definitely the Pantharama. I loved how Tami had Lyla (Minka Kelly) and Tyra (Adrianna Palicki) work together. This was a good episode.moreless

Tim reconnects with Tyra. Buddy reconnects with Family. Julie reconnects with another crush. Matt reconnects with honest affection. Smash reconnects with his football dream.

Typically understated and surprising. Settling Santiago into his new home was funny, touching, happy, and sad all at the same time. Smash hugging his mother might not be unexpected, but how that scene played out was well done.

I'm not particularly excited about Julie's new crush, but there are strong hints the writers are in control of that.

Matt's new dancing partner, and kiss, has been in the making from Day One, but the Morning After resolution, without saying a word, might have been one of the nicest scenes this season.

That's the beauty of the show. The characters are so well drawn that the audience can understand what's going on without the usual TV-overkill dialogue.moreless
