    • This is the one where it all began... Rachel leaves Barry at the altar, meets the gang, and moves in with Monica. Monica, meanwhile, sleeps with Paul the Wine Guy. Ross is reeling from his divorce from Carol, who has come out as a lesbian. The guys help Ross assemble new furniture for his now almost vacant apartment while discussing his romantic future as a single guy. Ross reveals to Rachel something she apparently already knew, namely that he had a crush on her in high school.

    • Carol, Ross's lesbian ex-wife, delivers the starling news that she is pregnant with his child. Monica is in a panic over a visit from her parents and hopes that Ross's news about his pregnant, lesbian ex-wife will take some of the focus off her from her hyper-critical mother. Rachel returns Barry's engagement ring only to discover that he still went on their honeymoon, except with Mindy, her best friend and maid of honor.

      The gang is crazy about Monica's new boyfriend, Alan, which makes breaking up with him much more difficult for her. While showing Joey how to smoke for an audition, Chandler gets hooked again. Meanwhile, it seems that everyone is trying to give Phoebe money: First her bank gives her $1000 as a result of a series of computer errors, then a beverage company gives her $7000 because she found a thumb in a can of their soda.

    • Ross is feeling depressed because it is the anniversary of the night he first slept with Carol. The guys take him to a Rangers game to cheer him up, but after he's hit by an errant puck, they take him to the hospital. Rachel has received her first paycheck, but her excitement turns to frustration when she sees what's left of it after deductions. The girls have a slumber party to cheer Rachel up but soon become depressed themselves when they realize that none of their plans for their lives has worked out. The pizza delivery guy mixes up the orders and the girls end up getting George Stephanopoulos's pizza by mistake, which ultimately leads to a significant improvement in their mood.

    • Joey would like to become reacquainted with an old girlfriend but she's now going with someone. He suggests a double date and enlists Monica's help to pose as his girlfriend and ultimately become his accomplice in breaking them up. As a way of spending time with Rachel, Ross suggests doing their laundry together. It turns out that it is Rachel's first time doing laundry, so Ross guides her through the process, and ultimately becomes her hero. Chandler has the unenviable task of breaking up with his girlfriend, Janice. He enlists Phoebe's help and discovers she has a unique talent for it.

      As a result of appearing in a play, Joey acquires an agent. The first job she gets for him is in Al Pacino's latest movie as his "butt-double". Unfortunately, Joey quickly gets himself fired for "overacting". Also at Joey's play, Chandler meets and beds a beautiful woman, but learns that she only wants a physical relationship. She not only has a husband but another lover. At first he's delighted to have all the fun and none of the responsibility, but eventually realizes that it's not enough. Rachel is proud of herself for having cleaned the apartment, but Monica objects to her repositioning the green ottoman. This leads to the revelation that Monica is not only hyper-organized, but worse, a carbon-copy of her mother.

      The power is out all over the city so the gang lights every candle they own and shares stories of their most unusual love-making locations. Chandler is not there, however, having had the good fortune to get locked in an ATM vestibule with Victoria's Secret model Jill Goodacre. Ross finally gets up the nerve to tell Rachel of his feelings for her, but is attacked by a stray cat before he can do so. Phoebe and Rachel go looking for the owner of the cat and Rachel finally finds him--a gorgeous Italian named Paolo.

      Chandler is shocked to discover that many of his co-workers think he's gay and that even the girls thought it when they first met him. The Geller family is gathered at the hospital when Ross and Monica's maternal grandmother passes away. When Ross and Monica are saying their goodbyes, she briefly comes back to life, but then dies again. At the cemetery, Ross falls into an open grave and hurts his back. At Nana's memorial, Judy gives him some pills to ease his suffering, but they get him high and he becomes maudlin, confessing his love for everyone. When he confesses his real love for Rachel, she just sees it as the pills talking. Judy takes a break from her usual criticism of Monica and they have a bonding moment.

      With Monica and Ross's parents spending Thanksgiving in Puerto Rico, Monica is elected to make dinner for the gang. Rachel is having no success raising money for a ski trip to Vail with her parents, so the gang chips in to send her. Joey gets a modeling job but ends up being a poster boy for VD. Ross discovers that Susan has been talking to his unborn child so follows suit. While the turkey is roasting, the Underdog balloon gets loose from the Macy's parade and when the gang goes up to the roof to see, they get locked out of their apartment. By the time they get back in, dinner is ruined and it's too late for Rachel to go to Vail. They end up having grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner, which pleases Chandler no end since traditional Thanksgivings bring back bitter memories of his parents' divorce.

      The gang makes and breaks a pact to celebrate New Year's Eve together, just the six of them. Ross compensates for his loneliness by getting a roommate--a monkey named Marcel whom everyone but Monica adores. Chandler dates and breaks up again with Janice. Phoebe faces a difficult decision when she meets a shy physicist who, in order to stay with her, is thinking of giving up a rare opportunity to do research in Minsk.

      When Monica cat-calls to a handsome stranger on the street, he is distracted and gets hit by an ambulance. Now in a coma, Monica and Phoebe compete for his eventual attention. Nora Bing, Chandler's famous romance-novelist mom comes to New York to visit. She has been a constant source of embarrassment for him, especially since she is so vocal about her sexual exploits. Ross is hurting from Rachel and Paolo's relationship, and when Nora tries to comfort him, she ends up kissing him. When Chandler finds out, it forms a temporary rift between him and Ross. Ultimately, Chandler has a heart-to-heart with his mother about how her behavior makes him feel and stops blaming Ross.

      Rachel is looking forward to her first weekend away with Paolo in the Poconos. Monica has made a dozen lasagnas as a favor to her Aunt Syl, but when it turns out they were supposed to be vegetarian, everyone she knows ends up getting one. Joey and Chandler's kitchen table breaks so they replace it with a foosball table. Ross doesn't want to know the sex of his unborn child, but with everyone else knowing, he feels left out. When Paolo goes to Phoebe for a massage, he makes a pass at her; now Phoebe must deliver the bad news to Rachel. When Ross tries to take advantage of the resulting breakup, he is crestfallen to learn that Rachel has sworn off all men.

      Chandler accidentally sees Rachel topless after her shower. When she tries to even the score by catching him naked in the shower, she sees Joey instead, resulting in a chain reaction of shower-peeking at the wrong person. With his father visiting him, Joey discovers an affair Joe Sr. has been having for years. Joey insists that his mother be told, only to discover that she already knew. Phoebe's new boyfriend Roger is a psychiatrist. The whole gang, including Phoebe, ends up hating him for his tendency to dehumanize everyone through analysis.

      Ross's first date in nine years is on Valentine's Day with a beautiful neighbor. Susan and Carol end up at the same restaurant. When Susan is called away, Carol and Ross end up having a meaningful discussion about their failed marriage. Out for a romantic evening, Joey brings Chandler along as a blind date for his girlfriend's girlfriend. When the mystery woman turns out to be Janice, Chandler finds himself having to break up with her for yet a third time. Phoebe, Rachel and Monica spend Valentine's day building a cleansing, ritual fire in which they burn all the articles left behind from failed relationships. The fire department is soon invited to attend.

      A massage client of Phoebe's, a restaurateur, is looking for a new chef and Phoebe recommends Monica. Monica prepares a gourmet dinner to impress him. Unfortunately, he's stoned when he arrives and would just as soon eat taco shells and Sugar-O's as her haute cuisine. After working as a data processor for five years, Chandler is given a promotion. He quits the job because the whole data-processing thing was only supposed to be temporary. His boss wants him back, however, and proves he can be very persuasive. Ross has a date with a beautiful colleague named Celia who expresses a need to be talked dirty to. Joey gives Ross a few pointers on the subject, much to Chandler's amusement.

      Joey and Chandler are at Riff's restaurant and run into Phoebe's twin sister, Ursula. Joey is attracted to her, which has a profound effect on his relationship with Phoebe who hasn't been on speaking terms with her sister for years. Marcel gets hold of Monica's TV remote with the result that all programs are now in Spanish. Ross attends Lamaze class with Carol and Susan and has a difficult time dealing with being a part of a three-person parenting team. Chandler is attracted to one of his female employees, so is put on the spot when his boss tells him that he must fire her. Rachel finally gets around to taking down the Christmas lights on the balcony but ends up falling, hanging by her ankle from the electrical cord.

      Monica takes Rachel to the hospital for a sprained ankle. When it turns out Rachel has no insurance, Monica reluctantly agrees to swap identities with her. This deception escalates when the girls date the cute doctors that treated Rachel. Ross has concerns about his fitness to be a father. The gang throws a surprise birthday party for Phoebe, but she is hurt to discover that Joey is with Ursula for their birthday. When Ursula ultimately dumps Joey, Phoebe's attitude changes and she poses as Ursula to let Joey down easy. Rachel thinks better of her insurance deception and pays her own hospital bill. The guys rush Marcel to the hospital after he has eaten and is choking on a Scrabble tile. In dealing with the crisis, Ross's confidence in his ability to be a father is restored.

      Tired of being referred to by customers as "Excuse me," Rachel interviews for a job as an assistant buyer at Saks Fifth Avenue. The guys reluctantly agree to include the girls in their regular poker game even though the girls don't know how to play. A battle of the sexes ensues and before long, Ross's competitive side is revealed. When Rachel doesn't get the job at Saks, Ross's better nature and affection for her win out.

    • Rachel is upset to learn that her ex-fiancé, Barry, is going to marry her former maid-of-honor, Mindy. Ross hopes for a romantic evening with Rachel after she spends the day babysitting his pet monkey, Marcel. When Rachel takes out some trash, Marcel manages to slip out of the apartment and goes missing. The gang searches frantically for him, but when Rachel calls Animal Control for assistance, Ross fears Marcel will be taken away from him since he is an illegal exotic animal. Eventually, Marcel is found and Animal Control is persuaded to drop the case. As Ross is settling in for his romantic evening with Rachel, her ex-fiancé Barry bursts into the apartment confessing that he still loves her.

    • Rachel begins seeing Barry, and despite her better judgement--given that he's still engaged to Mindy--ends up sleeping with him. Chandler believes he has found the perfect woman, but has problems contacting her. Someone is spying on the friends through a telescope and it turns out to be a woman. Mindy asks Rachel to be her maid-of-honor. Rachel confesses her affair with Barry, but only after learning that Barry slept with Mindy during Rachel's engagement to him.

      When Monica's credit card is stolen, she locates, then ends up bonding with the thief whose free-spirited lifestyle she envies. Joey enlists Chandler's help in coming up with a less ethnic-sounding stage name. Ross finds out that Marcel has reached sexual maturity and needs to be with other monkeys, so tries to get him accepted into a zoo.

      Ross is upset to learn that Chandler showed up in one of Rachel's dreams--in a very personal way. Monica is dating a college senior, but after taking his virginity discovers that he is actually a high-school senior. Chandler arranges a temp job for Phoebe as his secretary and is shocked to learn that his former friends at work now dislike him since he's become their boss. Ross is carrying a beeper so that when Carol goes into labor, she can get in touch with him. The number, unfortunately, is similar to that of an "escort" service and he keeps getting their calls.

      Carol has gone into labor and the gang all assembles at the hospital. The sight of babies causes Monica to wish she had one. Carol's doctor is cute and Rachel goes out of her way to make his acquaintance. She changes her mind when learning that given what he does for a living, the physical aspects of a female hold limited appeal for him. Joey meets a single, pregnant woman and ends up being a big help. Ross and Susan get into an argument and Phoebe drags them into a janitor's closet to chastise them for ruining what should be a happy event. The door gets locked by accident, but while locked in, they come up with the name "Ben" for Ross's new son.

      Joey's participation in a fertility study is preventing him from consummating his relationship with his new girlfriend. Monica suggests that he can still "be there for her", advice which proves very beneficial to both Joey and his girlfriend. Ross is going to China for the museum and Chandler, aware of his hopeless crush on Rachel, encourages him to move on. During Rachel's birthday party, Chandler lets it slip that Ross is in love with her. After some emotional turmoil, Rachel decides that it's good news and goes to meet Ross at the airport on his return. We see, however, that apparently Ross took Chandler's advice and "moved on", meeting a girl while in China.
