NBC (ended 2004)
Monica and Chandler are the perfect couple, and they just rock, but I have my issiues. Monica and Chandler kind of bought out the worst in each other... not Chandler so much, but season 5 onwards, Monica turned really obsessive over everything, and I'm pretty sure she wasn't as high maintenance in seasons 1-4. Also, she was completely walking over Chandler in season 7 onwards. Instead of that funny, sarcastic jokey guy, he turned into Mr Family Man. Admittedly, he did have a few moments, like the whole rambling thing that he did -- that was funny- but in Seasons 1-4 about every second line for Chandler was a some joke. Really hated how at Phoebe and Mike's Wedding they were a forcing him to stop making jokes. I swear, he stopped saying, "Could ... BE any more ..."
As for Richard and Monica, when they were together, I loved them. When they broke up, I thought it was actually really sad. Admittedly it was a little creepy when they first started dating, but they had a good, mature relationship. But, let's face it, they would have never lasted... he was almost twice her age.
SO, if I'd have to choose, Chandler all the way.

Although your analysis is correct and I agree with you, this was a character development Chandler *had* to go through. At one point, he needed to start 'growing up'. If he wanted to be happy, he had to get over his insecurities and commit himself to one woman in a lasting relationship. He overcame his fear of commitment, and I think he was happier before than after. And because of that, he no longer needed to crack so many sarcastic jokes, as he primarily used that as a defense mechanism. Still, the writers could have handled him with more class. He turned into a 'sad' character who made all bad jokes and then laughed at them himself (as the only one!). That was pathetic and not something the 'original' Chandler would do.

| In season 9, 'The One in Barbados- Part I', Phoebe accidentally refers to David as "Mike". She assures David it was just a slip of the tongue. She says: "Monica stills refers to Chandler as 'Richard'." Monica grabs her arm and takes her outside: "Thanks for dragging me down with you." You think she still loved Richard? |
Nah, I doubt it. It was probably just added for comic purpose, and Pheobe was probably lying.

| Can we pick timelines too? Because I liked Chandler and Monica's early relationship, like season 5 maybe. He still maintained his character and still delivered sharp comments and stood up for himself. Monica was still sweet and treated Chandler with respect. I guess this falls more within the general critism of the later years, but I did not like how their relationship turned out once they lived together and married. Chandler became more mature, which was okay. He couldn't act like a kid forever. But I didn't like how they turned him so feminine and lame. In the earlier seasons Chandler was funny, later on he was just the guy who told bad jokes. I really hated how Monica kept insulting him and walked all over him. Where was the cute Chandler and Monica that did the crossword puzzle together in season 5? I don't have a problem with her being the dominant one in thier relationship, but I found her very mean towards Chandler. And he just took it too. In the end, both of their characters were ruined IMO. But I guess that goes for all of them, except maybe Rachel. |
I agree, their marriage in the later seasons was very cliched (ie The dominant wife and the downtrodden husband)
But one of the greatest Mondler moments was from Season 8;
CHANDLER: You opened all the presents?
MONICA: You kissed another woman?
CHANDLER: Call it even?
MONICA: OK!
(High-five)
I love that moment. ![]()

I love that moment, too.
About that Richard vs. Chandler thing... I liked Richard, I really did and I had no problem with the age difference between him and Mon. But I think Chandler is so much better for Monica than Richard ever was. Monica and Chandler are such a funny and great couple!
