    Phoebe learns of an old family friend--her namesake, Phoebe Abbott--who may know the whereabouts of her father. A client gives her the use of his beach house near the women so Phoebe goes there to meet her, accompanied by the gang. Chandler can't let go of the fact that Monica doesn't consider him to be boyfriend material. A game of strip poker suggested by Joey backfires, leaving Joey in only his underwear. Rachel, jealous of Ross's girlfriend Bonnie, talks her into reverting to her former bald look. Phoebe confronts her namesake and receives some startling news. Rachel confesses to Ross that she still loves him, which forces Ross to have to choose between Rachel and his newly-balded girlfriend.

  • Pete's obsession to be the ultimate fighting champion, especially when he's no good at it, causes Monica to rethink their future together. Chandler has a problem when his new boss insists on slapping him on the butt as a sign of approval. Rachel doesn't mind Phoebe setting Ross up on a date with a bald girlfriend of hers, but is horrified to discover that the woman has since grown a beautiful head of hair.

    Upon discovering a mysterious "thing" on his butt, Ross seeks advice from the gang. Chandler suggests Ross go to the doctor that lopped off his third nipple and Phoebe recommends her herbalist. Phoebe can't choose between dating a fireman for his rugged masculinity or a schoolteacher for his sensitivity. Her choice becomes impossible when she discovers that the fireman is also sensitive and the schoolteacher has a body like a Greek god. Dating both of them, of course, creates problems. Monica is both excited and concerned when she believes Pete is going to propose.

    At the premiere of Joey's play, Ross witnesses Rachel's date screaming at strangers for no good reason. When he tells the others, they just assume he's made it all up out of jealousy. Joey and Kate finally get together, but their relationship is cut short by a big opportunity she's been given in Los Angeles. Phoebe needs to have her phone repaired before her warranty expires, but the company's help line keeps her on hold, indefinitely.

    Pete offers Monica a job as head chef in a restaurant he's just bought, but Phoebe sees through him: it is simply a way for him to pursue Monica romantically. When Monica realizes what he's been up to, to her surprise, she finds she may have feelings for him after all. Joey and Chandler adopt a baby chick and a duck. Ross passes up a chance to appear on The Discovery Channel in order to help Rachel, who has a cracked rib.

To get back at Ross, Rachel agrees to go on a date with his nemesis, Mark. Joey gets a part in a new play and quickly develops a crush on his co-star, Kate. Out of friendship, Monica continues to date Pete even though she is still not attracted to him.

Phoebe's 18 year-old half-brother Frank Jr. announces he is going to marry his home economics teacher, a woman more than twice his age. Chandler uses a hypnosis tape to help him quit smoking, but with an unexpected side-effect.

    With Ross and Rachel not speaking to one another, a competition for the company of the other friends ensues. Chandler starts smoking again. When Ross is excluded from a ski trip the gang goes on with Rachel, he visits Carol. The gang ultimately finds themselves stranded and out of gas, so a reluctant Ross borrows Carol's car to go and rescue them.

    After Ross has spent the night with Chloe from the copy place, Rachel calls and tells him she wants them to get back together. Ross is delighted, but despite his best efforts to conceal his temporary indiscretion, it ultimately gets back to Rachel. The other four friends are trapped in Monica's bedroom, forced to listen to the bitter fight that ensues as Rachel breaks up with Ross.

  • Ross and Rachel's constant bickering over her demanding job hours brings Rachel to suggest that they take a break from their relationship. Ross, believing that it is just an excuse for her to sleep with her former co-worker, Mark, seeks solace in the arms of another woman. Phoebe dates a diplomat who needs an interpreter around in order to communicate with her. To her regret, she asks Monica to be the interpreter's date. Chandler and Joey "very cautiously" consider a threesome with a hot woman who seems to want them both at the same time.

    Phoebe is reunited with her former singing partner who thinks "Smelly Cat" has potential as a commercial jingle. Chandler dates a former girlfriend of Joey's who has a prosthetic leg. When she becomes grossed-out by his third nipple, Chandler has it removed, then fears that it may have been the source of his comedic "powers". Rachel's new job occupies so much of her time it begins to put a strain on her relationship with Ross.

Rachel agrees to read Joey's favorite book, The Shining, in exchange for his reading her favorite, Little Women. Phoebe's new boyfriend from California insists on wearing shorts all the time. The gang soon becomes aware that his shorts don't provide much "coverage".

    To her embarrassment, Ross goes out of his way to make certain Rachel's co-worker Mark knows who she belongs to by sending endless gifts to her at work, including a serenade by a barbershop quartet. Joey gets a call-back for a role in a Broadway musical, but his exaggerated résumé catches up with him when he is asked to teach a complex dance number to the cast. Monica is attracted to Julio, a waiter at her restaurant who is also a poet. She changes her mind when she discovers his low opinion of women. Ross attended a bachelor party and now he and Ben have a play date with the stripper he met there and her son. As a result, Rachel now has a taste of Ross's feelings about Mark.

  • Rachel, discouraged because her current "fashion job" has nothing to do with fashion, encounters a handsome stranger while lunching at Monica's diner who sets her up for a job at Bloomingdales. Ross is suspicious of his motives for being so helpful. At Joey's birthday party, a drunken Chandler fools around with one of the seven Tribbiani sisters. Joey is delighted to think that Chandler might end up as his brother-in-law, but when it turns out that Chandler can't even remember which sister, he incurs the wrath of the entire Tribbiani clan.

Joey and Chandler compete for the attentions of a beautiful Dutch woman who is watching the game. The game eventually turns into a battle of the boys against the girls. Ross and Monica renew old sibling rivalries as they compete for the coveted "Geller Cup".

Chandler must now deal with the fact that she claims to love them both equally. While Rachel is babysitting Ben, Monica accidentally bumps his head into a post, leading Ross to assume it was Rachel who did it. Phoebe is convinced that she is cursed because every time she goes to the dentist, someone around her dies, but a toothache is forcing her to make another visit. When the gang notices that Ugly Naked Guy hasn't moved for a long time, Phoebe fears that he may be her latest victim. Joey fashions a long poking device from taped-together chopsticks in order to check for signs of life.

    When Monica buys a new bed from Janice's soon-to-be-ex-husband, "The Mattress King," Phoebe takes delivery, but because she is distracted at the time, the wrong one is delivered: a child's race-car-themed bed. Rachel attempts to have her father and Ross bond with disastrous results until they discover a common interest: Rachel's scatterbrained behavior. Joey gets a job teaching a soap opera acting class and ends up competing for a coveted role with one of his students. Later, at "The Mattress King" store, Joey spots Janice kissing her soon-to-be-ex husband.

    When Janice asks the gang if any of them have ever "almost" slept together, the friends flash back to a time three years earlier. Central Perk was still a bar. Chandler is trying to find a roommate and Joey applies, much to Monica's approval. Rachel, engaged to Barry at that time, comes into the bar with her girlfriends. When she mentions her need for one last fling before she marries, it gets Chandler's attention. Ross is feeling down, having discovered that his wife Carol is a lesbian. Phoebe tries to comfort him in a very personal way. Rachel ends up fantasizing about Chandler.

The gang ponders who they would put on their "freebies list", a list of five celebrities that their significant other would allow them to sleep with. Phoebe's half-brother Frank Jr. comes to visit her, but Phoebe has trouble relating to him. Joey re-tiles Monica's bathroom floor. Isabella Rossellini, a celebrity that Ross dropped from his list for reasons of proximity, comes into Central Perk.

Chandler's old fear of commitment emerges and he turns to Monica and Rachel for advice.

Monica is obsessed by a message on her answering machine from Richard which may or may not be recent. Phoebe must hide a hummus stain that the boys added to her ensemble. Finally, when Ross lays down the law to Rachel about getting dressed, she responds by deciding not to go at all.

  • Monica has broken up with Richard and is unable to sleep as a result. Chandler's soul-mate relationship with Janice has Joey down since he can't stand her. At Rachel's urging, Ross reveals a sexual fantasy of his involving Star Wars character Princess Leia in her gold bikini. To Ross's mortification, Rachel tells Phoebe about it and word spreads.
