    Monica and Rachel are rudely awakened by the crowing of Joey and Chandler's chick, now a rooster. A boast by Chandler and Joey that they know the girls better than the girls know them, leads to a possible solution to the bird problem. A game-show-style contest is proposed to establish who knows whom best, created and officiated at by Ross. If the girls win, the birds go; if the boys win, however, they get the girls' apartment. Meanwhile, Phoebe goes to the doctor to get her brother and sister-in-law's embryos implanted in her uterus.

    Phoebe tries to warn the gang in London that Rachel is on her way to disrupt the ceremony. Ross and Emily's parents meet at the rehearsal dinner but their initial pleasantries quickly descend into unpleasant squabbling. In trying to comfort Monica about the sorry condition of her love life, Chandler becomes more than just a friend. Rachel arrives in London in time to hear Ross say her name during the wedding ceremony when he should have said "Emily".

    To prove to Joey how sorry he is for kissing Kathy, Chandler agrees to spend Thanksgiving in a shipping crate. The gang decides to do Secret Santa and the problem of Rachel exchanging every gift she's ever received comes up. When Monica is chipping ice, she gets a piece in her eye. When she reluctantly agrees to go see her old boyfriend and eye doctor Richard to have it dealt with, to her surprise, Richard's son has taken his father's place. The fact that his son is as attracted to her as Richard was, creates a real dating-dilemma for her.

    Although Ross chooses Rachel over Bonnie, before continuing with their relationship, Rachel insists that he read a lengthy letter she wrote him. Phoebe struggles to deal with the revelation that her mother's friend Phoebe is actually her birth mother. Monica gets stung by a jellyfish and in order to relieve her pain, Joey and Chandler must resort to an embarrassing home remedy. After reading Rachel's lengthy letter in which she demands that Ross take full responsibility for his actions when they were "on a break", Ross must choose between his need for Rachel and his pride.

    The gang heads to London for Ross's wedding. Phoebe can't travel because of her pregnancy and Rachel doesn't go because she can't bear the thought of watching Ross get married. Joey's excessive enthusiasm for the trip wears on Chandler's nerves. Ross and Emily discover that the church where they were to be married is being torn down so Monica suggests to Emily that they postpone the wedding, much to Ross's consternation. Ultimately, they decide to go through with their wedding in the partially-demolished church. Phoebe attempts to help Rachel forget about Ross, but it doesn't work. Rachel heads for London to let Ross know that she loves him before he marries Emily.

    Ross wants to keep Emily from returning to England. He finds a most effective way when he proposes to her and she accepts. Phoebe is wearing "Santa pants" that she believes to be maternity wear. Tired of living in the boys' apartment, Monica and Rachel try to bribe Joey and Chandler with Knicks season tickets into trading places again.

    With a loudly-snoring Joey keeping him awake, Chandler is forced to take him to a sleep clinic. After picking up Emily's wedding dress as a favor to Ross, Monica can't resist the temptation to try it on. Jealous of Ross's imminent marriage to Emily, Rachel proposes to Joshua.

    Phoebe is faced with a big decision when her brother and his wife, who can't conceive conventionally, ask her if she will carry their child for them. Ross gets Joey a job at the museum as a tour guide, but Joey quickly discovers there is class distinction between the scientists and the other employees. Chandler is reluctant to consummate his relationship with Kathy because he fears he won't be able to measure up to her previous lover, Joey. After a less-than-stellar first attempt, he receives some very specific advice from Monica.

  • When no one is available to have dinner with Rachel, she decides to try going to restaurants alone. At first it's liberating, but before long she tires of it and decides to break up with herself. Chandler's attraction to Joey's girlfriend Kathy, as it turns out, is mutual and they end up kissing. Out of guilt, Chandler refurnishes his and Joey's apartment. When Joey discovers the reason, he is both hurt and offended and it creates a rift between them. Ross is persuaded to debut his "sound" for the gang and brings over his keyboard. Although the rest of the gang thinks his music is laughably bad, Phoebe is so daunted by his "gift", she wants to give up performing her own music.

    Phoebe is tired of being pregnant and the gang is tiring of her hormonal mood swings. After struggling with a choice between Joey and Chandler to be his best man, Ross ultimately chooses Joey, who proves both a great success and an abject failure in the role. To their regret, the girls throw the mercurial Phoebe a baby shower.

    Chandler is smitten with Joey's new girlfriend but can't bring himself to tell Joey. Ross becomes involved with a beautiful fellow single-parent, only to learn she just wants him as a babysitter. Thinking they are romantically involved, a jealous Rachel retaliates by dating a student who, as it turns out, steals from her. When Phoebe catches a cold, she loves the bluesy sound it gives her singing voice. When her cold goes away, she tries desperately to re-catch it from any sickly person in her acquaintance.

    Ross's new girlfriend seems nearly perfect in every way until he visits her apartment and to his horror, discovers that it is wall-to-wall garbage. Chandler buys a thoughtful birthday present for Joey's girlfriend Kathy, but not wanting to outshine Joey in the gift-giving department, he lets Joey give it to her, instead. Rachel attempts to finish a crossword puzzle all by herself. Phoebe's no-nonsense business acumen proves to be a great help when Monica is hired to cater a funeral. As a result, they decide to partner-up in the catering business.

    After a three-day fishing trip with his dad, Joey is in a jam when he doesn't have time to take a shower before going to the set of Charlton Heston's new movie. Rachel continues to fawn over clothing shopper Joshua. As a favor to Rachel, Ross takes her boss's niece Emily to the opera and they end up spending the weekend together in Vermont. To help Chandler get over his breakup with Kathy, the girls take him to a strip club.

    In her new play, Kathy simulates sex, half-naked with an attractive hunk. Chandler finds it difficult to watch, but especially worries that their pretend lovemaking may extend to the real thing off-stage. His resulting jealousy and accusations result in his worst fear being realized. After Rachel is demoted to the humiliating job of personal shopper, she is about to quit when Joshua, an attractive customer seeks her assistance. Now her problem is trying to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. Monica, now living in the boys cramped apartment, misses playing the hostess to friends' gatherings. She attacks the problem in typical Monica fashion, fixing up the boy's apartment until it shines.

Phoebe's attraction to one of her clients jeopardizes her job as a masseuse. Chandler can't muster the willpower to cancel an expensive gym membership he never uses, so he enlists Ross's help.

    Ross must choose between two girls: one who is ideal but lives in Poughkeepsie, a two-and-a-half hour train ride away, and one who is more conveniently located, but not as appealing. Rachel accepts Chandler's offer to set her up with someone from work, but their signals keep getting crossed as to her intentions with this person. As the new head chef at Allesandro's, Monica is being abused by her subordinates. On a suggestion from Chandler, she hires Joey for the express purpose of firing him in front of the others to show them who's boss. Phoebe struggles to write a holiday song that includes the names of all her friends and also rhymes.

    Phoebe believes that her adoptive mother's spirit resides in a cat that jumped into her guitar case in Central Perk. Monica goes on a date with Rachel's hunky high-school boyfriend only to discover that he's never outgrown his adolescence. When Joey and Chandler decide to sell the entertainment center, in order to clinch the sale, Joey ends up giving it his (as well as Chandler's) all.

    Chandler and Ross are excited to learn that their old college friend whom they've nicknamed "Gandalf, the party wizard" is coming to town. They're crestfallen when he cancels, but Joey convinces them that they don't need Gandalf in order to "party". Joanna destroys Rachel's chance at a promotion so she can keep her as an assistant. When Rachel threatens to quit, Joanna offers her a position as assistant buyer, a raise, an expense account and her own assistant. When Rachel shows up for her new job the next morning, she learns that Joanna won't be able to follow through on her offer, with good reason. When Monica fills in for a friend as food critic for a small newspaper, she pans a local restaurant. When she proves to the owner that she was right in her criticism, he offers her a job as head chef. Now she must decide between taking the job and continuing her catering business with Phoebe.
