    As a one-year anniversary present, Monica gives Chandler and herself a trip to Vegas, which coincidentally, gives Chandler a chance to mend his relationship with Joey. Phoebe is determined not to be left out of another adventure, and before long, everyone winds up going. Phoebe accidentally lets it slip that Monica had lunch with Richard. Ross mistakes Rachel's playful behavior as a come-on and the resulting embarrassment leads to a battle of wits.

    Joey seems to have finally hit big when he gets offered a lead part in a movie shooting outside of Las Vegas, however, when Chandler begins expressing doubts about the film's legitimacy, it causes a rift in their friendship. A simple eye-infection gives Rachel more trouble than she bargained for. Phoebe isn't speaking to Ross, but can't remember why.

    Rachel buys a psychotic Sphynx cat and Phoebe learns that Gary is going to ask her to move in with him. Thinking this is way too fast, she tries to get Chandler to talk him out of it. Ross and Joey start throwing a ball while they are bored but it changes from a time-filler to a super-competitive obsession when Monica joins in.

When Monica and Rachel raid Ross's apartment for margarita ingredients, they overhear a message from Emily suggesting she is having second thoughts. The boys go for a ride-along with Gary the cop and when they hear what they believe to be a gunshot, Joey throws himself over Ross, making Chandler jealous.

    Joey lands a role on Law & Order, so his Italian-speaking grandmother comes over to watch his network debut. When he realizes that his scenes have ended up on the cutting-room floor, Joey must improvise a solution. In getting ready for her and Chandler's ten-month anniversary, Monica is reminded once again that you should never lend anything to Rachel. Meanwhile, Ross's ineptitude at flirting becomes painfully obvious when he tries it on the pizza delivery girl.

Ben gets offered an audition for a soup commercial and Joey auditions to be his father in the ad. Monica and Phoebe plan a surprise birthday party for Rachel, but when Monica takes over most of the arrangements, Phoebe makes the most of the two menial chores Monica has left her.

    Joey has a dream that it is he, not Chandler, who is in a loving relationship with Monica. Phoebe finds a police badge under her seat at Central Perk which inspires her to become personally involved in law enforcement. When she encounters the cop whose badge it is, he seems more interested in Phoebe herself than in her criminal behavior. Ross buys a sofa and rather than pay the exorbitant delivery fee, enlists the help of his friends in lugging it up the stairs to his new apartment--with predictable results.

    Ross is delighted to discover that his best friend and his sister are in love, not merely fooling around. Joey starts dating Katie, a little girl who packs a mean punch. When Ross, being new to his apartment building, refuses to contribute to the retirement fund of the building's maintenance man whom he's never even met, he winds up offending the other tenants. Chandler suffers from a fear of commitment and comes up with a unique way of apologizing to Monica for his resultant behavior.

    When the friends discover that Ugly Naked Guy is moving out of his apartment, Ross leaps at the opportunity to sublet it for himself. Phoebe finds out about Monica and Chandler and with Rachel's help, pretends she wants to sleep with Chandler to force him and Monica to admit to their relationship. Joey, privy to both secrets is caught in the middle. Ross, from the perspective of his new apartment, is the last one to learn the truth about his best friend and his sister.

Phoebe's grandmother has passed away and she plans a memorial service which her biological father ends up attending. Monica discovers, to her horror, that Chandler and the rest of the gang hate what she has always believed to be her superior massages.

    Monica goes to a party with Chandler where he works, delighted that they don't have to hide their relationship from anyone there. She learns, however, that Chandler manifests a different, more annoying personality when he's around his boss. Meanwhile, Ross learns that Emily is getting remarried and in his misery finds a sympathetic ear (and shoulder) in Janice who still believes Chandler to be in Yemen. Rachel, now aware of Monica and Chandler's relationship, tries to get Monica to admit to it.

    As 1999 begins, the gang makes resolutions, most of which will require a lot of willpower to keep. For instance, Rachel vows to stop gossiping, a resolution that is put to the test when she learns about Monica and Chandler's relationship. Chandler bets Ross $50 that he can keep his resolution to not make fun of his friends. Ross's resolution is to try something new each day and his unusual choices make Chandler wish he hadn't made the bet. Joey resolves to learn to play the guitar since it's already on his résumé, Monica resolves to take more pictures of her friends and Phoebe resolves to pilot a commercial jet.

    Rachel has second thoughts about getting involved with Danny when she observes his uncomfortably close relationship with his sister. Following his suspension from the museum, to fill his empty days, Ross takes charge of Joey's career by getting him to write a play for himself. He and Chandler get into a squabble, however, when Ross doesn't allow Joey to play a game he and Chandler invented called "Fireball". Phoebe gets a job as a Christmas charity donations collector and typical of Phoebe, goes to extremes.

Meanwhile, Ross becomes so enraged at work when someone steals his turkey sandwich, it results in his suspension. Phoebe takes a literature class and asks Rachel to come with her, but Rachel doesn't take the class seriously.

Ross is not the least bit thankful for his second divorce and subsequent eviction. The group then begins to share memories to determine whose was the worst Thanksgiving, which leads Monica to reveal to Chandler a terrible secret.

When Rachel encounters him in the lobby after he has shaved, had a haircut and cleaned up, her regard for him is radically altered.

The gang worries that with Ross not being able to see Rachel anymore, it will ultimately divide them all.

It also opens up a debate between Joey and Phoebe as to whether there is such a thing as an unselfish act. Meanwhile, to hide her relationship with Chandler, Monica tries to convince Rachel that her secret lover is someone from work. When it gets back to Chandler that Monica's secret lover is "the best she's ever had", Monica finds his resulting ego-trip insufferable.

    Phoebe is rushed to the hospital for the birth of her brother's triplets. While there, Joey winds up with severe sympathy pains that turn out to be kidney stones. Meanwhile, Rachel tries to set Monica up on a date with a male nurse, resulting in her relationship with Chandler being brought into focus. Rachel becomes nervous when Phoebe suggests that she'd like to keep one of the triplets for herself. "Chandler", the baby they expected to be a second boy baby turns out to be a girl, but they decide to name her "Chandler", anyway.

When the gang catches Chandler kissing Monica goodbye, he tries to divert suspicion from their relationship by kissing the other girls goodbye, too. Phoebe feels left out when the gang starts sharing stories about their London experiences, so they plan a new adventure that includes her. Their plans are interrupted, however, when Phoebe's water breaks.

Rachel comforts Ross at the airport about Emily not showing up for their honeymoon to Greece and Ross suggests that Rachel use Emily's ticket herself.
