Season 3 Episode 11

The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Jan 09, 1997 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Goof: The "Yentl soup" reference to the 1983 Barbra Streisand movie Yentl, would be inappropriate in a 50's-themed diner. Even the original play the movie is based on didn't premiere until 1975. This would also be true for the "Barbra Streisand-wich", since in the 50's, Streisand was still a child.

    • Trivia: Joey's seven sisters are Veronica, Mary Angela, Mary Therese, Gina, Dina, Tina, and Cookie.

    • Goof: When Rachel and Monica are talking at the diner, there is a red glass sitting in front of Rachel. In the next shot, when she says "It's not funny!" to Mark, the glass is gone. Then after that it's back again.

    • Goof: In the guy's apartment when Ross and Chandler are talking about Mary Angela, Ross raises his drink. In the next shot, he raises it up again.

  • Quotes

    • Chandler: (coming into Monica's apartment) Hi! ...Anybody got a length of rope, about six feet long... with a noose at the end?

    • Joey: (to Chandler who has just seen Janice and her husband) Man, I remember the first time I saw that girl Katherine... after we broke up? She was just walkin' with her friend Donna, just... laughin' and talkin'. God! killed me!
Chandler: Yes, but you ended up having sex with both of them that afternoon!
Joey: Sorry... (grinning) ...any excuse to tell that story.

    • Rachel: (to Mark at Monica's diner) Well, then. So I'm, uh... just gonna go back to talking to my friend here... you can go back to enjoying your little hamburger.
Monica: Actually, that's a Barbra Streisand-wich. (seeing Rachel look at her) What? I named that one...
Mark: Uh, just one other thing...
      Rachel: Yes?
Mark: I, uh... I work at Bloomingdale's and I might know of a job possibility if you're... you're interested.
Rachel: Do you want my pickle?

    • Monica: (to Chandler who's been drinking lime Jell-O shots) Stick out your tongue!
Chandler: (drunk) Take off your shirt!

    • Joey: (about the Jell-O shots) Oh, My God! How many of these have you had?! These are pure vodka!
Chandler: Yup, Jell-O just like mom used to make.

    • Ross: (about Mark offering Rachel a job) Well, I'm just saying, I mean, why else would he just, y'know... swoop in out of nowhere for no reason.
      Rachel: To be nice...?
Ross: Hey, Joey. Are men ever nice to strange women for no reason?
      Joey: No. Only for sex.

    • Cookie: Hey! What are we drinkin' over here?
Phoebe: Oh! Well, I have, uh, um... vodka and cranberry juice.
Cookie: No kiddin'? That's the exact same drink I made myself right after I shot my husband.
Phoebe: Wow! ...Yeah, I don't know how to talk to you.

    • Chandler: Well, my apartment isn't there anymore because I drank it!

    • Chandler: (about Joey's sister) ...I definitely stuck my tongue down her throat!
      Monica: That was me.
Chandler: (embarrassed) Oh... Look, when I've been drinking sometimes I tend to get a little overly-friendly... I'm sorry.
      Monica: That's okay...
      Rachel: That's alright...
      Ross(almost inaudible) That's okay...

    • (Chandler has decided to dump Joey's sister Mary-Angela by mail)
: (to Chandler) What the hell's the matter with you?! How d'you think Joey's gonna react when he finds out you blew off his sister with a letter?!
Chandler: Well, that's the part where you tell him I moved to France... when actually I'll be in Cuba.
Ross: Look, look... You've got to do this yourself, okay? In person. At least you know her name. You just go to the house and you ask for Mary-Angela, okay? When whichever one she is comes to the door, you take her for a walk, you let her down easy.
Chandler: Okay... (thinking) What if Mary-Angela comes to the door and I ask for Mary-Angela?
      Ross: Where in Cuba?

    • Ross: (to Monica about Mark's ulterior motives for helping Rachel) Am I? Am I? Am I out of my mind?! Am I losing my senses?!

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Monica: (about Mark) He is so dreamy! Y'know, when he left, I actually used the phrase, "Hummina, hummina, hummina..."
"Hummina, hummina, hummina..." is what Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) used to stammer when put on the spot in the popular CBS show, "The Honeymooners".

    • Joey: (to his grandmother) Why don't you go into the den? I think Cops is on.
Cops is an American reality television series that follows police officers during their patrols.

    • Monica: Actually, that's a Barbra Streisand-wich. (seeing Rachel look at her) What? I named that one...
Barbra Streisand is an Academy Award-winning American singer, theater and film actress, composer, producer, director as well as liberal political activist.

    • Monica: Order up! I've got a Yentl soup, James Beans and a Howdy, hold the Doody.
"Yentl soup" is word play on "Lentil soup", and alludes to the 1983 Oscar-winning movie Yentl, written, produced and directed by, as well as starring, Barbra Streisand. The movie is an adaptation of the play Yentl by Leah Napolin and Isaac Bashevis Singer.
"James Beans" is a word play on James Dean, the 1950's movie star who is perhaps best known for his performance in the teen angst drama, Rebel Without a Cause.
Howdy Doody was a children's television program from the 1950's, hosted by Bob Smith as "Buffalo Bob". Many of the characters, including Howdy, were marionettes.
