Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • It's a girl!

An okay episode, not one off my favorites, the only highlight of the episode was that Ross & Rachel discover the baby's sex. And of course it's a girl. While they argue throughout the episode because first they don't want to know the sex & Ross catches Rachel looking at the records but she couldn't get to see & Ross thinks so while they are also fighting over the names they want while Rachel picks strange names and Ross picks geeky names. Then Ross finds out the sex and tells Rachel. Joey likes Rachel and the gang finds out, while Chandler enjoys taking baths, definite character development.moreless
  • We learn the baby is a girl!

Great episode! We learn Rachel is having a girl. I have to say that Rachel and Ross came up with bad names. Phoebe even had better ones for a boy to! Lol. That was so funny. Monica and Chandler think it is Phoebe Joey likes then Joey says who it really is when they are talking. Chandler goes to the bath, Monica comes in to yell at him, Phoebe comes in and tells Monica she was wrong, Joey comes in and everyone confronts him, Rachel comes in to tell them the news and then so does Ross. Something about that bathroom.moreless
  • Chandler discovers the relaxation of taking a bath.

Monica introduces Chandler to hot, warm bubble baths - but soon wishes she hasn't.

After Chandler develops a strange passion for them, he uses completely unappropriate bath decorum (to qoute Monica) in order to get his bath.

Meanwhile Ross and Rachel visit their OBGYN to find out if all is well with the baby and Ross thinks Rachel discovers the sex of the baby.
  • Ross and Rachel argue over what to name their baby; they also discover the sex of the baby; Phoebe, Chandler, and Monica find out about Joey's growing crush on Rachel; Chandler enjoys his bathmoreless

This episode was very entertaining! I especially like the bit when Ross and Rachel are deciding what to name their baby. Their doctor says, "Please don't name your baby 'Phebo'". I also like the underlying patriotic theme. American flags pop up throughout the show (i.e. in Joey and Rachel's apartment and in the coffeehouse). In the opening sequence, Joey is wearing a t-shirt honoring Lt. William Burke, who died on September 11.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • Trivia: Phoebe says she can't understand why she keeps losing at Tic-Tac-Toe and begins to reset the game. Rachel tells her, "No, no, honey. My circle always stays in the middle".
Starting with the middle square in no way guarantees winning at Tic-Tac-Toe. The only way that it would make a difference is if Rachel got to move before Phoebe with one circle already in place. Of course, it's possible that that was the joke.

    • Trivia: On Joey's cereal boxes the brand names are blacked out.

    • Trivia: Joey tells Phoebe he stayed up all night making a list of all the things he doesn't like about Rachel (although all he came up with was that she made him switch to light mayonnaise). Ironically, this is the second time that one of the friends makes a list containing the things he doesn't like about Rachel. The first was Ross's infamous pro/con list, in "The One with the List."

    • Continuity: In this episode Chandler asks Monica to have sex on the balcony, but Monica doesn't like that idea. However in "The One with Phoebe's Husband" Monica admits she had sex on the balcony with Fun Bobby.

    • Trivia: Even though Friends never directly mentions the 9/11 terrorist attack in the United States, in the opening scene Joey is wearing a shirt with the emblem for the FDNY with the name Capt Billy Burke, a NYC firefighter who lost his life on September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center.

    • Magna Doodle: A drawing of a train

    • Trivia: When Ross and Rachel are discussing baby names, Ross suggests Thatcher and Rachel suggest Sawyer. These are the last names of Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher from the Mark Twain novels.

    • Continuity: In "The One with the Sonogram at the End" Ross is arguing with Susan and Carol about baby names. Susan suggests Helen, and Ross gets upset about naming their child Helen Geller. In this episode, when Ross and Rachel are vetoing names at the coffee shop, he suggests Helen again.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Monica: I'm telling you, if you had some candles and some bubbles and some music, you would love it! It would take all of your stress away.
Chandler: Honey, it's two o'clock on a Wednesday and I'm watching Road Rules. How stressed do you think I am?

    • Joey: Hey, Chandler, you got a minute? I really need to talk to you.
Chandler: Yeah. Is this a cold pizza talk or a leftover meatloaf talk?
      Joey: Neither.
Chandler: Oh my God, what's up!?

    • Joey: All right. Okay. You and Monica, friends for a long time, and sure there are rules, but then you went to London. Oh, no, but that's different. I mean, there are rules there, too! You know what I mean?
      Chandler: Do you?

    • Phoebe: Are you going to find out the sex of the baby?
Ross: No, we talked about it. We don't want to know. All we care about is that it's happy and healthy.
Rachel: Yep! Happy and healthy! And cute!
      Ross: And smart!
      Rachel: Popular.
Ross: With an aptitude for science.
Phoebe: Are you two talking about the same baby?

    • Phoebe: (to Ross and Rachel) If it's a girl, Phoebe. And if it's a boy, Pheebo.

    • Rachel: (about baby names) Check this out. If it's a girl... "Rain".
      Ross: Veto.
      Rachel: Why?
Ross: Rain? "Hi, my name is Rain. I have my own kiln, and my dress is made out of wheat."
      Phoebe: I know her!

    • Ross: Okay, how about for a guy, Thatcher?
Rachel: Ross, why do you hate our child?

    • Ross: How about Ruth?
Rachel: Oh, I'm sorry, are we having an 89 year-old?

    • Chandler: (thinking in the bath) I could fall asleep in here. I could drown in here. Mmmm, drowning...

    • Rachel: So, which of these babies do you think is the ugliest?
Ross: What? Rach', come on, that's terrible! They're babies. They're all beautiful.
Rachel: Third one from the left?
Ross: Yeah, why is it staring at me? I think it knows I'm talking about it.

    • Ross: (to Rachel, after trying to peek at the sex of the baby) Shame on you! Ugly baby judges you!

    • (After peeking at the doctor's file to see the sex of the baby)
Rachel: I swear, I didn't see anything, and I don't want to know! It was just a momentary lapse.
Ross: Momentary lapse. Don't you have any self-control?
Rachel: Okay, a couple months late on the lecture, Ross.

    • Joey: (about Rachel) I stayed up all last night and made a list of everything I don't like about her. You wanna hear it?
      Phoebe: Yeah.
Joey: (Joey unravels a crumpled piece of paper) She made me switch to light mayo. That's it! That's all I got! And you know what? It tastes the same and my pants fit better.

    • Rachel: We're having a girl?
      Ross: No.
Rachel: That's what you just said!.
      Ross: No.
      Rachel: You said girl.
Ross: Yes. I'm... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Rachel: I'm not! We're having a girl! Sometimes I can't believe it's with you, but still! We're having a girl!
Ross: I know! I know. You know what? I'm putting Ruth back on the table!
Rachel: Oh, yes! We'll have ourselves a little baby Ruth...
      Ross: Permission to veto.
      Rachel: Yes, please.

    • Phoebe: Well I just thought I would drop by and tell you how it went with Joey.
      Chandler: You told her?!
Monica: She pulled it out of me! She's like a conversational wizard!

    • Joey: (thinking about Rachel) Everything's gonna be fine. It's just a crush.
Rachel: (coming out of her bedroom) Hi, sweetie!
Joey: (to Rachel, in his mind) I love you!

    • Monica: (about taking a bath together) It's nice to do this together isn't it?
Chandler: Yeah. And what you're doing feels so good.
      Monica: I'm not touching you.
      Chandler: Really?
      Monica: It's the salts.
Chandler: Oh, sweet Lord, new realms of pleasure!

  • NOTES (3)

    • Joey: You are, as your friend Tony would say, "Great!"

A reference to Tony the Tiger's catchphrase "They're Great!" which is said during the Frosted Flakes TV commercials.

    • Chandler: Honey, it's two o'clock on a Wednesday and I'm watching Road Rules. How stressed do you think I am?
Road Rules is an MTV reality show about a group of strangers traveling in an RV and completing missions. It first aired on July 15, 1995.

    • Chandler: Joey hasn't had this much trouble getting out words since we saw him in Macbeth.
Monica: That was a long night.

Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare, based on the historical Scottish king.

    • Chandler: I'm going to need a bigger boat.
This is a famous line from the 1975 movie Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg.

    • Phoebe: How would you like it if I sent you to Lee Major's house, and I told you that he liked you, and when you got there, you found out he didn't like you?
Lee Majors is the star of the TV show The Six Million Dollar Man.

    • Rachel: We'll have ourselves a little baby Ruth.
Baby Ruth is a popular candy bar, made with peanuts, caramel, and nougat. It was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth.

    • Joey: I was, like my friend the bird would say, Coo-coo!

This is a reference to the tagline Sunny, the spokes-bird for Kellogg's Cocoa Puffs cereal, says during the commercials. "I'm coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs!"
