Season 5 Episode 14

The One Where Everybody Finds Out

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Feb 11, 1999 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Continuity: When Ross goes to visit "Ugly Naked Guy", the apartment number is 201, as it is when Ross is showing it to Dr. Ledbetter. In the next episode, "The One with the Girl Who Hits Joey", Ross's apartment number is suddenly 3B.

    • Goof: When Chandler and Phoebe kiss she says that it is their first kiss. Actually, Chandler kissed her before in "The One with All the Kissing."

    • Trivia: This episode sees the first appearance of Joey's stuffed toy penguin, "Hugsy". Joey's bedtime pal would come to figure prominently in Season 7's "The One with the Memorial Service" when Rachel wants him for her daughter, Emma.

    • Trivia: When Ugly Naked Guy answers the door to Ross, he is holding the same cup that Ross bought in the "The One with the Ultimate Fighting Champion" that Ross said you were allowed to keep.

    • Goof: When Chandler and Phoebe are in his apartment and Chandler goes to put on music, Phoebe's hand sweeps up into view at the side of the screen as though she's already dancing, but when it cuts to a full shot of her, her hands are at her sides and she's not dancing. This happens again in the next couple of shots.

    • Goof: Right before Phoebe hits on Chandler in Central Perk, she tells Joey and Rachel not to eat her cookie. But after her conversation with Chandler, Phoebe leaves Central Perk without ever touching her cookie.

    • Magna Doodle: A drawing of two people skiing

    • Trivia: This episode marks the second and last on-screen appearance of Ugly Naked Guy; the first was in "The One with the Giant Poking Device". This also marks the last time he's ever mentioned.

    • Goof: According to the commentary, Lisa Kudrow has a real problem drinking a lot of liquid or chugging. When Phoebe and Chandler chug their wine from nervousness, Lisa fakes it. There is one shot shortly after that with a quick glimpse of her wine glass on the counter and it's still pretty full.

    • Continuity: When Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe are talking, Phoebe says that Chandler and Monica don't know that she and Rachel know about them. A couple episodes earlier, however, Rachel confronted Monica about it, and even though Monica lied, she still would have known that Rachel knew.

    • Trivia: Why would Chandler and Monica have sex up against the window of their apartment? In New York city you never know who's looking into your windows. Monica and Chandler seem to have a habit of having sex where they could be caught. They also get busy in a public bathroom, a hospital, the Central Perk storage closet and were even about to try it in the library near Ross's book.

  • Quotes

    • Phoebe: Oh hey, you guys, look! Ugly Naked Guy is putting stuff in boxes!
Rachel: I'd say from the looks of it our naked buddy is moving.
Ross: Ironically, most of the boxes seem to be labeled "clothes".

    • Ross: It would be so cool to live across from you guys...
Joey: Yeah, then we can do that telephone thing, y'know--where you have a can and we have a can... and it's connected by a string!
Chandler: ...or we could do the actual telephone thing.

    • Phoebe: (after spotting Monica and Chandler having sex) Oh! My eyes! My eyes!!

    • Phoebe: You mean whenever Monica and Chandler were, like, y'know, doing laundry or going grocery shopping or... Oh! All that time Monica spent on the phone with sad Linda from camp?
Rachel: Uh-huh. Doin' it, doin' it--phone doin' it.
Phoebe: Oh, I can't believe it! I mean, I think it's great! ...for him. She might be able to do better.

    • Rachel: Phoebe just found out about Monica and Chandler.
Joey: You mean... about how they're friends and nothing more?
Rachel: No, Joey, she knows. We were at Ugly Naked Guy's apartment and we saw them doing it through the window... Actually, we saw them doing it up against the window.
Phoebe: You know, we saw them fornicating! ...Okay, so they know that you know but they don't know that Rachel knows?
Joey: (sorts it out in his mind) Yes.... but it doesn't matter who knows what... Now enough of us know that we can just tell them we know--now all the lyin' and the secrets will finally be over!
Phoebe: Orrr... we could not tell them we know and have a little fun of our own.
      Rachel: Well, whaddaya mean?
Phoebe: Well, y'know... every time they say that they're like doing laundry, we'll just give 'em a bunch of laundry to do!
Rachel: Ooh... I would enjoy that.
Joey: No, no... Y'know what would even be more fun? ...telling them!
Phoebe: That doesn't sound like fun.

    • Phoebe: You don't have to do anything--just don't tell them that we know.
Joey: No! I can't take anymore secrets! I got your secrets, I got their secrets--I got secrets of my own, y'know!
Rachel: You don't have any secrets.
Joey: Oh, yeah? Well, you don't know about Hugsy, my bedtime penguin pal...

    • Phoebe: Watch... learn... and don't eat my cookie.

    • Chandler: (to Phoebe who's being strangely flirtatious with him) Are you okay?
Phoebe: Well, if you really wanna know... Oh, I can't tell you this.
Chandler: Phoebe, it's me... you can tell me anything.
Phoebe: (shyly) Well, actually, you're the one person I can't tell this to... and the one person I want to the most.
      Chandler: What's goin' on?
Phoebe: I think it's just, y'know, that I haven't been with a guy in so long and... you know how sometimes you're looking for something and you just don't even see that it's right there in front of you... sipping coffee... Oh-no! Have I said too much? ...Just somethin' to think about--I know I will...

    • Monica: (to Chandler in bed) You are so cute! ...How did you get to be so cute?
Chandler: Well, my grandfather was Swedish... and my grandmother... was actually a tiny little bunny.

    • Chandler: The weirdest thing happened at the coffeehouse, I think... I think Phoebe was hitting on me.
Monica: What are you talking about?
Chandler: I'm telling you, I think Phoebe thinks I'm foxy!
      Monica: It's not possible.
      Chandler: Oww...
Monica: I'm sorry, it's just that Phoebe's always thought that you were charming in a... in a sexless kind of way...

    • Rachel: Hey, Mon, you wanna come see a movie with us?
Monica: Actually, I was gonna do some laundry. Hey, Chandler... you wanna come do it with me?
Chandler: Sure, I'll do it with ya.
Rachel: Okay, great. Hold on a sec. (goes to her room and returns with a huge bag of laundry) You don't mind, do ya? That would really help me out a lot... thanks.
Monica: Oh, I-I don't think I have enough quarters.
Phoebe: I have quarters! (picks up a bank bag filled with quarters)
Chandler: Great... Now we can do laundry all night... All night laundry!

    • Ross: (remembering fondly) Someone sent us a basket at work once and people went crazy over those little muffins... It was the best day...
Chandler: Your work makes me sad.

    • Chandler: (to Monica about Phoebe who pinched his butt before leaving) Okay, did you see that? With the inappropriate and the pinching?
      Monica: Actually, I did.
Chandler: Okay, so now do you believe that she's attracted to me...?
Monica: Oh, my God! Oh, my God! She knows about us!
      Chandler: Are you serious?
Monica: Phoebe knows and she's just tryin' to freak us out! That's the only explanation for it.
Chandler: Okay, but what about my pinchable butt and my bulging biceps--she knows!

    • Chandler: (about his and Monica's relationship) Phoebe knows about us!
Joey: Well I didn't tell them...
      Monica: Them? Who's "them"?
      Joey: Uh, Phoebe... and Joey...

    • Joey: But, hey... it's over now, right? 'Cause you can tell them that you know that they know and I can go back to knowing absolutely nothing!
      Monica: Unless...
Joey: No, not unless... This must end now!
Monica: Oh, man! They think they are so slick messing with us? But see... they don't know that we know they know...

    • Rachel: (to Ross about influencing Ugly Naked Guy into subletting his apartment) You know what you should do? You should find out what his hobbies are and then use that to bond with him... Like... if I wanted something from Joey, I would strike up a conversation about, say, um... sandwiches... or my underwear.
      Joey: I'm listening...

    • Ross: (about Ugly Naked Guy) Didn't he used to have a cat?
Phoebe: I wouldn't bring that up, it would probably just bum him out.
Joey: Yeah... poor cat, never saw that big butt comin'.

    • Phoebe (just off the phone with Chandler): Oh, my God! He wants me to come over and feel his bicep and more!
Rachel: Are you kidding? I cannot believe he would do that to Mon-- (realizes) Joey? they know that we know?
      Joey: No.
      Rachel: ...Joey?!
      Joey: They know you know.
      Rachel: Oh, I knew it!
Joey: I would say, "Thank God! Everybody knows! It's finally over!" But that hasn't been workin' for me.

    • Phoebe: They don't know that we know they know we know! And Joey you can't say anything!
Joey: Couldn't if I wanted to!

    • Phoebe: (provocatively) So, Chandler... I'd love to come by tonight.
      Chandler: Really?
Phoebe: Oh, absolutely. Should we say around seven?
      Chandler: (awkwardly) Yes...
Phoebe: Good. I'm really looking forward to you and me having sexual intercourse.

    • Joey: (looking out the window) Hey-hey, check it out! Check it out! Ugly Naked Guy has a naked friend!
Rachel: Oh, yeah! ...Oh, my God! That's our friend! It's naked Ross!

    • Monica: (about Phoebe) She is going to give in way before you do.
Chandler: How do you know that?
Monica: Because you're on my team and my team always wins!
      Chandler: At this?!

    • Phoebe: So, here we are... Nervous?
      Chandler: Me? No... You?
Phoebe: No, I want this to happen.
      Chandler: So do I.

    • Chandler: (after Phoebe dances for him) You look good...
Phoebe: Thanks... Y'know... when you say things like that, it makes me wanna rip that... sweater-vest right off.

    • Phoebe: (talking in the hallway about Chandler) He's not backing down--he went to get lotion!
Rachel: Honey, it's Chandler, you can take him... I mean, c'mon--don't you remember when you made him cry using only your words?
Joey: (coming out of the girls' apartment) Aw, man! Aren't you guys done yet? I wanna sit in my chair!
Rachel: Joey, just look at it this way... The sooner Phoebe breaks Chandler, the sooner this will all be over and out in the open.
Joey: Ooh, I like that! Oh, okay... show him your bra. He's afraid of bras--can't work 'em.
(Joey reaches over and deftly flips open Phoebe's blouse revealing her bra)
Phoebe: (looking down) My, you didn't rip off any buttons!
Joey: (proudly) It's not my first time.

    • Phoebe: (walking slowly towards Chandler, looking down at her open blouse) So... this is my bra...
Chandler: It's very, very nice... Well, c'mere... I'm very happy we're going to have all the sex...
Phoebe: You should be--I'm very bendy... I'm gonna kiss you now.
Chandler: (melodramatically) Not if I kiss you first...

    • Chandler: (after an awkward kiss) You win! I can't have sex with you!
      Phoebe: And why not?
Chandler: Because I'm in love with Monica.
      Phoebe: You're what...?
(Monica comes out of the bathroom)
Chandler: (pointing) Love her! That's right, I love her! I love her! (then tenderly to Monica) I love you, Monica.
Monica: I love you too, Chandler.
Phoebe: (moved) I just... I thought you guys were doing it... I didn't know you were in love...!
