Ross has trouble understanding Joey's revelation, as does Gunther which is really funny, poor gunther. However, he (ross) comes to his senses and convinces Joey to tell Rachel how he feels. Joey takes her out to dinner and tells her, as she thinks it's a joke. She doesn't feel the same way, but they pledge to remain friends which hurts loeys feelings alot. Meanwhile, Phoebe meets Monica's soulmate and chandler gets upset and a little bit jealous over him, but monica reconciles him rebelieving that they will always be together as they got married and she doesent believe in soulmates.moreless

I'll give this episode one thing, it did own up to it's cliffhanger. Ross reacted reasonably for being Ross that Joey had feelings for Rachel. Ross' freak outs are so hilarious, that he actually made this episode worth watching. Now for the moment we've all been waiting for (not really): Joey tells Rachel that he is in love with her, and as expected, Rachel cannot return those feelings, leaving things up in the air, but honestly, I really didn't care for those two, which is probably why I didn't enjoy season eight as much. The thing I did enjoy was Rachel's pregnancy, that was probably the only highlight of this season, probably the only successful story arc as well. Because this Joey/Rachel thing really got tiresome after a while, and I felt like they spent way too much time on the issue. The majority of fans are Ross & Rachel fans anyways, so I'm sure this wasn't good for the ratings. Ugh: A Monica/Chandler plot, Phoebe made it better with her quirkiness. Honestly, I think she is the only one that hasn't completely turned in to a caricature of herself. Average episode, not the best.moreless
  • Joey tells..

    9.0
Good episode! Joey finally tells Rachel he loves her. Ross sure freaked at the beginning when Joey told him and then Joey turned around to see Gunther behind him and he yells Rachel to. Thats so funny. Sometimes it feels like Chandler and Monica aren't really married. Monica kinda seems a bit weird sometimes by leaving her husband and going to talk to some random British dude. The end was the best. Rachel and Joey hugging for ages and then that waiter thinks one is dying and hope it is the girl because the guy is hot. That was so great!moreless
  • Joey feels awkward expressing his feelings to Rachel.

    9.0
This episode, though improbable and unoriginal, was nicely produced.

There's nothing new about falling in love with someone, where a friendship has progressed so far that a relationship becomes awkward. There's nothing new about an episode where the primary plot is the awkwardness of putting years of friendship at stake by attempting to act on the feelings of love.

And there's certainly nothing new about a woman attempting to rush a man the first time he approaches her.

He tells her at a restaurant, at a table with an improbably nosey waiter. The totality of that scene - the high moments and the absurdum alike - results in a highly memorable scene.moreless

    • Ross: (About Rachel) Look, if she's gonna end up with somebody else, the truth is she couldn't find a better guy. So...
      Joey: Hey, thanks.
Ross: So when do you think you're gonna talk to her?
Joey: Oh my God, I have to tell her! I haven't even thought about what I will say. What should I say?
Ross: I'm understanding, but let's not get carried away.

    • Ross: Ya know, I still can't believe it. Joey and Rachel? I mean, it's like you and me going out, only weirder.
Monica: All right, I know you're hurting, and, and I want to be supportive, but don't say that again!

    • Joey: You wanna come in for a beer or something?
      Ross: Yeah, sure.
      Joey: You got any beer?

    • Joey: Yeah. Here we are. Uh...I...I think I'm falling in love with you.
      Rachel: What?!
Joey: I'm falling in love with you.

    • Phoebe: Do you believe in soul mates?
Rachel: Oh, yes, I do. I do. I believe there is one perfect person out there for everyone. And do you know how you find him? You stop looking for him. That's why I've stopped looking for Russell Crowe. He'll find me.

    • Phoebe: (To Chandler about Don and Monica) I don't know! They both want to live in a house of cheese. I don't know how to fight that.

    • Monica: (About Joey) It's completely freaking him out. He's talking about moving to Vermont.
      Ross: Why?
Monica: He says he wants to leave the country.

    • Waiter #2: (Looking at Joey and Rachel) What's the matter with them?
Waiter: I don't know. I think maybe one of them is dying. I kinda hope it's the girl. The guy is really cute.

  • NOTES (3)

  • ALLUSIONS (2)

    • Joey's T-shirt with a picture of Calvin having sex with Hobbes is a reference to the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Its creator, Bill Watterson, has forbidden merchandising based on the comic strip, but a market for illegaly made Calvin and Hobbes merchandise exists, often of a crude nature that no official merchandise would be allowed to have (the most popular being an image of Calvin peeing on something).

    • Ross: I didn't know Joey was on JAG.

JAG is a adventure drama show that ran from 1995-2005. It dealt with a group of military officer lawyers who investigated, prosecuted, and defended those charged with military crimes.
