Nana dies twice, Monica and her mother come to an understanding, Ross falls into an empty grave, and everyone at Chandler's office thinks he's gay This episode wasnt the funniest episodde of the show in fact it was a long way off but it still made me laugh at times. Ross on the pills was hilarous "Oh I dont get it" Jack Geller shouting " Now im depressed" when watching the game at a funeral very very funny. Ross being jealous of Rachel and Paulo is one of the funniest parts of season 1 . I award this a 8 out of 10moreless
  • Awesome.

    9.0
Ross and Monica go to the bedside of their dead grandmother, who momentarily returns to life. Chandler questions his sexual persona when a colleague wants to arrange a date for him with a man. Another awesome episode from "Friends". I love it. It's so funny when Ross is saying goodbye to his "dead" nana. And when they come out fromt he hospital room, there is some awesome lines, I alsway find myself laughing when I watch this episode, Well I laugh at all the episode of "Friends", but this one is really funny. I also love this episode because everyone at Chandler's office thinks he is gay and when the group first meet him they thought he was too. Really funny episode. Oh and Chandler has a "quality".moreless
  • Chandler's gay innuendo begins!

    8.5
Not the best episode of Friends but still had some moments, at the beginning it started out slow, but then it started to become sad, with The Sweet n' Low's falling, the death of Nana. The funeral service. Was all very sad. But then it started to have a completely different plot as it started to be about Ross being high on pain pills and almost revealing his feelings for Rachel, while Chandler finds out everyone thought he was gay when they first met him, which makes him insecure. Which was another light side of the episode. The other sad part is when Monica & her mom have a mother/daughter talk about Nan & became about her earrings & it turns out to be Nana's. An decent laughable episode.moreless
  • Chandler: I just have to know, okay. Is it my hair? Rachel: (Exasperated) Yes, Chandler, that's exactly what it is. It's your hair. Phoebe: Yeah, you have homosexual hair.

  • Monica & Ross Go To Their Nana's Bedside, She Returns To Life Then Dies, Everyone At The Office Thinks Chandler's Gay

    10
Ross And Monica Go To Their Nana's Bedside Seeing As She Is Dying, She Returns To Life Momentarily And Then Dies.

Ross Falls Into A Empty Grave And Breaks His Back.

Everyone At Chandler's Office Thinks He Is Gay After A Work Colleague Arranges A Date For Him, With A Guy!

This Episode Cracks Me, Especially Chandler, Who Is So Sarcastic, And Ross Falling In The Grave Was Hilarious, Albeit It Hurting A Lot!

Another Brilliant Episode, Man I Love Friends!

Ross And Monica's Parents Don't Like Monica As Much As Ross, Because Ross Is A Medical Miracle, This Creates A Lot Of Tension Between The 2 Of Them.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Goof: When Ross falls in the open grave, there is a lot of mud visible on his knees when he rolls over on to his back. When the camera angle changes to the reactions of his friends and then back to him in the grave, there is no mud at all on his knees.

    • Continuity: Rachel says she thought Chandler might be gay when she first met him, but later dismissed the thought since he spent Phoebe's birthday looking at her breasts. Rachel met Chandler for the first time when she was still in high school and they actually made out a party, as seen in "The One Where the Stripper Cries." So it's highly unlikely she didn't realize he was straight before Phoebe's birthday many years later.

    • Continuity: Joey says he didn't think Chandler was gay when they first met. In "The One with the Flashback", where they meet for the first time, Joey does think Chandler is gay.

    • Continuity: Phoebe's birthday is inconsistent. In "The One with Frank Jr." Phoebe tells her half-brother that her birthday is February 16th. Also, in "The One with Two Parts (2)" Phoebe has a birthday party in February. However, in "The One Where Nana Dies Twice" Rachel talks about Phoebe's last birthday party. Since Rachel first met Phoebe earlier that season, this implies that Phoebe's birthday must have occurred since September, when Rachel first joined the group. Also, in "The One with Phoebe's Birthday Dinner", Phoebe's birthday is close to Halloween, consistent with Rachel's statement. Furthermore, in "The One Where They All Turn Thirty", the flashbacks of Phoebe's 30th birthday imply her birthday is in the summer.

    • Trivia: Although Phoebe's job still hasn't been mentioned, we see her checking out Ross's back spasms after he falls.

    • Trivia: This episode is the first one to joke about Chandler's gay mannerisms or "quality". This became a running joke throughout the series. The role of Chandler was originally going to be gay, but the idea was scrapped after Matthew Perry was cast.

  • QUOTES (15)

    • Ross: (High from pain medication) Rachel. Rachel Rachel. I love you the most.
Rachel: (Humoring him) Oh, well you know who I love the most?
      Ross: No.
      Rachel: You!
Ross: Oh... you don't get it!
      (He passes out.)

    • Ross: (About Rahcel getting a phone call from Paolo) So, he's calling from Rome. I can call from Rome. All I have to do is go to Rome.

    • Phoebe: (Walking in the cemetery) God, what a great day... What? Weather-wise!

    • Jack: I was just thinking. When my time comes--
      Monica: Dad!
Jack: Listen to me! When my time comes, I wanna be buried at sea.
      Monica: You what?
Jack: I wanna be buried at sea, it looks like fun.
      Monica: Define fun.

    • Shelley: Do you want a date Saturday?
      Chandler: Yes please.
      Shelley: Okay. He's cute, he's funny, he's--
      Chandler: He's a he?
Shelley: Well yeah... Oh God. I just, I thought... Good, Shelley. I'm just gonna go flush myself down the toilet now. Okay, goodbye...

    • Shelley: Hey gorgeous, how's it going?
Chandler: Dehydrated Japanese noodles under fluorescent lights... does it get better than this?

    • Monica: So Mom already called this morning to remind me not to wear my hair up. Did you know my ears were not my best feature?
Ross: Some days it's all I can think about.

    • Jack: This is why your mother buys all my clothes. I hate to shop. I hate it.
Monica: Dad, don't you think this might be more about the fact that once you make the decision it's like acknowledging Nana's actually gone?
Jack: No, I really hate to shop.

    • Joey: (Looking at a picture) Ooh, look-look-look-look-look! I got Monica naked!
Ross: (Looking) No no, that would be me again. I'm, uh, just trying something.

    • Chandler: You're watching a football game at a funeral?
Joey: No, it's the pre-game. I'm gonna watch it at the reception.
Chandler: You are a frightening, frightening man.

    • Jack: Everyone thinks they know me. Everyone says "Jack Geller, so predictable." Maybe after I'm gone, they'll say "Buried at sea! Huh!."
Monica: That's probably what they'll say.
      Jack: I'd like that.

    • Chandler: I just have to know, okay. Is it my hair?
Rachel: (Exasperated) Yes, Chandler, that's exactly what it is. It's your hair.
Phoebe: Yeah, you have homosexual hair.

    • Monica: She is unbelievable, our mother is...
Ross: Okay, relax, relax. We are gonna be here for a while, it looks like, and we still have boyfriends and your career to cover.
      Monica: Oh God!

    • Ross: (About thinking Chandler was gay) No no, me neither. Although, uh, y'know, back in college, Susan Sallidor did.
Chandler: You're kidding! Did you tell her I wasn't?
Ross: No. No, it's just 'cause, uh, I kinda wanted to go out with her too, so I told her, actually, you were seeing Bernie Spellman... who also liked her, so...

    • Rachel: (To Chandler) When I first met you... I thought maybe, possibly, you might be... but then you spent Phoebe's entire birthday party talking to my breasts, so then I figured maybe not.

  • NOTES (7)

    • International Episode Title:
Czech Republic: Loučení s babičkou (Saying Goodbye to Grandma)

    • When everyone is looking at the photo of Nana and her friends, the label says Java Joe's. This is an inside joke, because Central Perk was originally going to be called Java Joe's.

    • Elliott Gould was credited as a "Special Appearance."

    • This episode is the first to feature location shooting (i.e. scenes that are not on a set or the WB backlot), with the scenes in the cemetery.

    • "The Rachel" makes its debut in this episode. It was an often imitated hairstyle for the next couple of years. Jennifer Aniston said her hairdo was created by accident when her friend cut her hair with a razor.

    • This episode runs 23:58 on DVD (a typical sitcom runs about 22:00). One added scene features Monica and her dad looking at coffins, before he says he wants to be buried at sea.

    • Christina Pickles received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in this episode.
