Goof: Rachel says that Ross mentioned asking her out her first night in the city, but it was actually her second night in the city. Rachel's first night in the city, Monica slept with Paul the wine guy, Ross, Joey and Chandler assembled furniture, and Rachel watched Joanie Loves Chachi while clutching her wedding gown. The following morning Rachel makes coffee for the first time in her life and goes shopping. It is the evening of that second day when she shares the last Oreo with Ross.
Trivia: This is the first episode to mention Rachel's habit of exchanging gifts. This habit becomes a running joke throughout the series.
Goof: When Rachel is on the balcony with her date Carl, a set worker dressed in black is visible on the left side of the screen.
Continuity: Rachel's birthday is inconsistent. In "The One with Joey's New Girlfriend", Rachel tells Gunther her birthday is May 5, and this is consistent with the month of birthday parties thrown for her in this episode (which aired in May 1995) and in her one-month-early surprise party in "The One Where Rachel Smokes" (which aired in April 1999). Rachel's 30th birthday, however, is celebrated in February in "The One Where They All Turn Thirty", which aired on February 8, 2001. Rachel also mentions that her birthday is after Valentine's Day in "The One with the Girl From Poughkeepsie". A birthday in February is also consistent with Rachel's statement to a police officer in "The One with Chandler's Dad" that she is an Aquarius (January 21- February 19).
Ross: (looking at baby pictures) And here's little Ben nodding off...
Monica: Aw, look at Aunt Monica's little boy!
Phoebe: Oh, look, he's got Ross's haircut!
Joey: Hey, Chan', can you help me out here? I promise I'll pay you back.
Chandler: Oh, yeah, right, Okay... including the waffles last week, you now owe me... seventeen jillion dollars.
Joey: Well, I'm helping out down at the NYU Med School with some... research.
Ross: What kind of research?
Joey: Oh, just, y'know... science.
Ross: Science... Yeah, I think I've heard of that.
Joey: (sighing) It's a fertility study.
Monica: Oh, Joey, please tell me you're only donating your time.
Joey: (about participating in a fertility study) Alright, c'mon you guys, it's not that big a deal. Really... I mean, I just go down there every other day and... make my contribution to the project. Hey, hey, but at the end of two weeks, I get seven hundred dollars!
Phoebe: Wow! You're gonna be making money hand over fist.
(Chandler and Joey enter Monica's apartment carrying charcoal and BBQ utensils)
Chandler: Men are here!
Joey: We make fire! Cook meat!
Chandler: Then put out fire by peeing, no get invited back!
Monica: (about Joey's new girlfriend) What does she think of your little science project?
Joey: You think I'm gonna tell a girl I like that I'm also seeing a cup?
Monica: Man's got a point.
Joey: Well, the tough thing is, she really wants to have sex with me.
Chandler: Crazy bitch.
Joey: If I wanna get the money, I'm not allowed to conduct any... personal experiments, if y'know what I mean...
Monica: Joey, we always know what you mean.
Phoebe: (about Ross bringing luggage) How long did you think this barbecue was gonna last?
Ross: I'm going to China.
Phoebe: Jeez, you say one thing, and...
Monica: You're going to China?
Ross: (not wanting to get into details) It's for the museum. Someone found a bone. We want the bone. They don't want us to have the bone. I'm going to try to persuade them to give us the bone. It's a whole big bone thing.
Ross: Hey, is Rachel here? Um, I wanted to wish her a happy birthday before I left.
Monica: Oh, no, she's out having drinks with Carl.
Ross: Oh... Hey, who's Carl?
Monica: You know, that guy she met at the coffeehouse.
Phoebe: Oh, well, see, there's this guy she met at the--
Ross: At the coffeehouse? Right.
Phoebe: So you do know who he is!
Ross: I'm going to China.
Joey: The country?
Ross: No, no, this big pile of dishes in my mom's breakfront.
Joey: Move on. Go to China. Eat Chinese food.
Chandler: Of course there, they just call it food.
Joey: (to Ross) We want you to be happy. And I may only have a couple beers in me, but... I love you, man.
Chandler: I'm still on my first. I... I just think you're nice.
Melanie: (talking about Joey) There is a little child inside this man.
Chandler: Yes, the doctor said if they remove it, he'll die.
Monica: (about Ross's gift) I can't believe he did this.
Chandler: Oh, c'mon... Ross? Remember back in college, when he fell in love with Carol and bought her that ridiculously expensive crystal duck?
Rachel: What did you just say?
Chandler: (panicked) Ahem... um... crystal duck.
Rachel: No, no, no... the, um, the... "love" part?
Chandler: (incoherent) F-hah... flennin...
Rachel: Oh... my God.
Chandler: (rubbing his temples) Oh, no-no-no-no-no...
Joey: That's good, just keep rubbing your head. That'll turn back time.
Phoebe: (about Rachel finding out that Ross loves her) This is really, really huge.
Chandler: No it's not. It's small. It's tiny. It's petite. It's wee.
Phoebe: Nuh-uh. I don't think any of our lives are ever gonna be the same ever again.
Chandler: Okay, is there a mute button on this woman?
Monica: (to Rachel about Ross's feelings for her) Did you have any idea?
Rachel: No! None! I mean, my first night in the city, he mentioned something about asking me out, but nothing ever happened, so I just... (to Joey) Well, what else did he say? I mean, does he, like, want to go out with me?
Joey: Well, given that he's desperately in love with you, he prob'ly wouldn't mind gettin' a cup o' coffee or somethin'.
Chandler: (about Ross) He's in China!
Joey: The country...
Monica: No, no, wait. (checking Ross's itinerary) His flight doesn't leave for another forty-five more minutes.
Chandler: What about the time difference?
Monica: From here to the airport?
Chandler: (as Rachel is leaving for the airport) Rachel! I love you! Deal with me first!
Monica: (to Rachel) Then why the hell are you dumping my brother?
Joey: Oh, it was amazing. You know how you always think you're great in bed?
Chandler: The fact that you'd even ask that question shows how little you know me.
Joey: Man, oh, man. It was like a ticker-tape parade.
Chandler: Yes, I know. As it happens, my room is very, very close to the parade route.
Joey: It's like I'm able to appreciate it on another level!
Chandler: I didn't know you had another level.
Monica: Hey, great skirt! Birthday present?
Monica: Oh, from who?
Rachel: From you. I exchanged the blouse you got me.

Carl: I'm just saying if I see one more picture of Ed Begley Jr. in that stupid electric car, I'm gonna shoot myself.
Ed Begley Jr. is an actor and environmentalist who is best known for his role on the television series St. Elsewhere.
Chandler: Hey, is something going on with O.J.?
Chandler was referring to the O.J. Simpson trial which took place during this season. O.J. Simpson, a famous football player, was accused of murdering two people. It is often characterized as being "the Trial of the Century."
Ross: Do you know who this Carl is?
Chandler: Um, let's see. Alvin... Simon... Theodore... No.
Alvin, Simon, and Theodore are the main characters of the popular children's show Alvin & the Chipmunks.
Melanie: Anyway, that's when me and my friends started this whole fruit basket business. We call ourselves "The Three Basketeers."
Joey: Like the three musketeers, only with fruit.
This is an allusion to the book and film The Three Musketeers.
Rachel: This one's from Joey... Feels like a book... I think it's a book... and it's a book!
Phoebe: Oh, it's Dr. Seuss!
Joey: That book got me through some tough times.
Joey buys Rachel Dr. Seuss' book Oh the Places You'll Go. Dr Seuss is a famous children's author who also wrote Cat in the Hat and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Oh the Places You'll Go has gained popularity as a graduation gift.
