Season 5 Episode 7

The One Where Ross Moves In

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Nov 12, 1998 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Continuity: Considering all the emotional turmoil Ross went through with Emily, he doesn't seem particularly broken up about losing her--except, perhaps, for the fact that their divorce is yet another blemish on his marital record. Consider, by comparison, what he went through after losing Carol, or what Monica went through when she broke up with Richard, or for that matter, what Chandler went through when he broke up with Kathy--or even Janice.

    • Only on Television: There are a couple of things wrong with Ross's apartment predicament. In the previous episode, he had all the things he hadn't sold to Gunther packed in boxes and was spackling the walls in preparation to move out. Monica invited him to dinner before he had actually moved, and while at Monica's, he broke up with Emily over the phone. Why, then, would he have even bothered moving into Emily's cousin's apartment? Moreover, since he would have had to give at least a month's notice at his old place, he would still be in possession of it and could simply have reclaimed it.

    • Magna Doodle: NO GIRLS ALLOWED
Magna Doodle: A drawing of a smiley face

    • Continuity: Rachel says to Danny that she doesn't sail, however, two years later in Season 7's "The One with Phoebe's Cookies", she teaches Joey how to sail and states that her dad once bought her a boat.

    • Goof: When Chandler and Joey are discussing the Ross situation and Chandler asks "What are we gonna do?", his arms are crossed. When the camera angle changes, his hands are clasped in his lap.

    • Goof: In the teaser scene when Joey shows Chandler his National Geographic, Chandler is stroking his face with his left forefinger. When the camera angle changes, his hands are clasped in his lap.

  • Quotes

    • Chandler: (to Ross whose hair is mussed from all the running around) But... you have to promise me you will let us know the second you are feeling better, so that we can make fun of your hair!

    • Ross: I've been moving around so much, I'm starting to feel like a nomad.
      (Joey laughs)
      Ross: What?
Chandler: He thought you said "gonad".

    • Larry: Wow, Monica... if every restaurant were as clean as yours... I'd have a tough time making a living.
      Monica: (pleased) Oh, Larry...
Phoebe: (to Larry) Um... do health inspectors work on commission?
      Larry: (smirking) No... bribes.

    • Phoebe: (to Monica) Hey, you should really read that book you wrote. (to Larry) Wow! You saw the hat in the kitchen and knew that she'd have to go in there hatless to get it. You could have your own, y'know, health inspector detective show...

    • Monica: (to Rachel, now that Ross is single again) Oh, wait a minute... you're not gonna...
: Oh, honey, please... No, I can't get started with all that Ross stuff again. I mean, he's gonna be screwed up for a long time... And besides, y'know, I don't... I don't go for guys right after they get divorced.
Monica: Right! only go for them five minutes before they get married.

    • Joey: (to Ross) Since you're gonna be here for awhile, I was thinkin' we, uh, put your name on the answering machine.
Ross: Oh! I uh, hope you don't mind, but I kind've, already... jazzed it up a little. Check it out... (plays their new answering machine greeting with him singing to the tune of "We Will Rock You") "We will, we will, call you back!"
      Joey: Hey, alright!
      Ross: Pretty cool, huh?
(They both laugh as Ross heads to the bathroom.)
Joey: (to Chandler) You're fake-laughing too, right?
Chandler: Oh, the tears are real.

    • Larry: (at a restaurant on a date with Phoebe) Just walking past the kitchen I saw ten violations! I'm shutting this place down!
Phoebe: You have the power to do that?
Larry: This does. (shows her his badge)
Phoebe: (turned on) Shut it down!

    • Chandler: (spotting it among Ross's things) Oh, my God! The air purifier! Ross's air purifier! All I heard through four years of college was... (makes an irritating humming noise).
Joey: Dude, you should've gone out once in awhile...

    • (Joey has stacked all of Ross's moving boxes around the TV)
: (standing inside the wall of boxes) C'mon, Chandler... Ross is our friend and he needs us right now, so why don't you be a grownup and come watch some TV in the fort?!

    • Monica: (looking through her peephole to see who knocked) It's Danny.
Rachel: Don't let him in! I'm supposed to be at a regatta gala.
Monica: (calling to Danny through the door) We'll be right there! (to Rachel) Can't you just say it starts later?
Rachel: What? What kind of a regatta gala starts at night?
      Monica: The fake kind!

    • Joey: (about Ross's annoying habits) Look, I don't know how much more of this I can take! Did you know he taped over my Baywatch tape with some show about bugs?! My God! What if that'd been porn?!

    • Chandler: (checking out a possible new apartment for Ross) Yeah, well look at this kitchen-slash-bathroom. Well, that's great! Y'know, so you can cook while in the tub.
Joey: Somebody was using his head!

    • Chandler: (on the phone about Ross) Yes, he's a pimp. He's a big, tap-dancing pimp!

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Joey: Did you know he taped over my Baywatch tape with some show about bugs?!
Baywatch was an American television series about the lifeguards who patrol the crowded beaches of Los Angeles County, California. The show was notorious for its female cast members wearing revealing bathing suits and running in slow motion.

    • Ross: (on the answering machine message) "We will, we will, call you back".
Ross's message is a parody of Queen's "We Will Rock You."
