This is my second favourite episode of season one of Friends it was really funny when they play poker, it's funny because when you play poker it gets like this you get angry when you loose just like Ross, everyone was great in this episode. For those people who say season one is the worst season watch this and I garentee you will change your mind.moreless
  • Poker Face.

This was one of the best episodes in season one, it was absolutely flawless. I forgot all bout this episode at first, but it is really good. Rachel wants to be an assistant buyer but doesn't get the job. This episode by the way was also really suspenseful for me. Rachel & Ross going all in. Ross pretending like he had bad cards to let Rachel win. That was so nice of him, yet again, we see Monica get competitive, I like the running gag with the Pictionary incident. The ending credits were hilarious. Everyone ducked an covered. An amazing episode.moreless
  • One of the best in the season

The One With All The Poker is one the best episodes in Seson 1, and it has some great one liners. When Rachel is tired of her boring, underpaid and under fulfilling job at Central Perk as a waitress, she decides to try out for a position at Saks 5th Avenue. However her lack of experience and her bad resume combined with a load of errors means that she can't get to the job. Then there's also the poker, the guys are plying poker and the girls decide that next time, they want to be in on the fun. The first time they do absolutley awfully, but, then Monica's Aunt Iris teaches them the tricks of the trade.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • Trivia: In the first poker game when Chandler is making his joke about settling the Jamestown colony of Virginia, they use the same reaction shot of Rachel twice. She folds her arms and gives Chandler a "look"; just before and again just after he says, "You see, King George is giving us the land, so...".

    • Continuity: For this episode, a larger circular table top has been placed on top of Monica's kitchen table, likely to accommodate the fact that with six players at the table, all the cards, poker chips, food and drinks, the existing table was just too small. The larger top is of a darker wood, but you can see the existing smaller table top in honey-colored wood beneath it. The added top is on the table throughout the entire episode, but is not there in the preceding or following episodes.

    • Goof: When Rachel raised the bet after she found out that she wasn't hired, the reflection of the moving camera and camera operator are visible on the window behind Monica.

    • Trivia: When Rachel impressively shuffles the cards she is using a trick deck.

    • Continuity: Rachel seems surprised by her lack of typing ability, however in "The One with Mrs. Bing" we learned that when everybody was reading her manuscript.

    • Goof: When Marcel is dancing, you can clearly see the reflection of someone directing him by moving their hand up and down.

    • Trivia: Marcel was not actually dancing in this episode. The clip was just looped.

  • QUOTES (16)

    • Rachel: Hey, look, you guys, I'm going for anything here, okay? I cannot be a waitress anymore. I mean it! I'm sick of the lousy tips, I'm sick of being called, "Excuse me..."

    • Ross: Rach', did you proofread these?
      Rachel: Uh, yeah, why?
Ross: Uh, nothing, I'm sure they'll be impressed with your excellent "compuper skills".
Rachel: Oh, my God! Oh, do you think it's on all of them?
Joey: Oh, no. I'm sure the Xerox machine caught a few.

    • Phoebe: (reading Rachel's mail) Wow!
      Rachel: What?
Phoebe: Your VISA bill is huge!

    • Rachel: Well, now... How come you guys have never played poker with us?
Phoebe: Yeah, what is that? Like, some kind of guy thing? Like, some kind of sexist guy thing? Like, it's poker, so only guys can play.
Ross: No, women are welcome to play.
Phoebe: Oh, okay... so, then, what is it? Some kind of, y'know, like... Like, some kind of, y'know, like... Alright, what is it?

    • Monica: Let's play for real. High stakes, big bucks.
Ross: Are you sure, because Phoebe just threw away two jacks because they didn't look happy.

    • Phoebe: (to Joey) Oh, I see... so then you were lying.
      Joey: About what?
Phoebe: About how good your cards were.
      Joey: I was bluffing.
Phoebe: Aha! And what is bluffing? Is it not another word for lying?

    • Joey: You know what, you guys? It's their first time, why don't we just forget about the money, alright?
      Monica: Hell, no... we'll pay!
Phoebe: Okay, Monica? I had another answer all ready.

    • Rachel: Can you believe what a jerk Ross was being?
Monica: Yeah, I know. He can get really competitive.
      (Phoebe laughs scornfully)
      Monica: What?
Phoebe: Oh, hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.

    • Rachel: Oh, I beg to differ. The Pictionary incident?
Monica: That was not an incident! I was gesturing, and the plate slipped out of my hand.

    • Phoebe: (settling up after losing to the guys at poker) Alright, here's my $7.50, but I think you should know that this money is cursed.
      Joey: Huh?
Phoebe: Oh, I cursed it! So, now bad things will happen to he who spends it.
Chandler: (taking the money) That's alright, bad things happen to me anyway. This way I can split 'em up with a movie.

    • Rachel: (to Ross who's being smug about winning) Hmmm. Oh, it's so typical. "Ooh... I'm a man! Ooh... I have a penis! Ooh... I have to win money to exert my power over women!"

    • Ross: Your money's mine, Green.
      Rachel: Your fly's open, Geller.

    • Phoebe: Hey, you know what I just realised? "Joker" is "poker" with a "J". Coincidence?
      Chandler: Hey, that's "joincidence", with a "C".

    • Rachel: (after winning a hand of poker, sing-song to Ross) I have got your money, and you'll never see it, and your fly's still open...
      (Ross checks his pants)
Rachel: Ha, I made you look.

    • Phoebe: Okay, Joey, your bet.
Joey: I fold like a cheap hooker who got hit in the stomach by a fat guy with sores on his face.
(The girls look at him, confused)
      Joey: Oh, I'm out.

    • Rachel: (to Ross) Boy, you really can't stand to lose, can you? Your whole face is getting red... little veins popping out on your temple...
Phoebe: Plus, that shirt doesn't really match those pants.

  • NOTES (5)

  • ALLUSIONS (11)

    • While the gang is playing Pictionary in the tag scene, two movies are depicted. Bye Bye Birdie is a Broadway musical satire on American society. The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel written by Milan Kundera in 1982 and made into an American movie in 1988.

    • Rachel: Guys, guess what, guess what, guess what, guess what!
Chandler: The fifth dentist caved, now they're all recommending Trident?

Trident Gum is famous for their slogan, "Four out of five dentists agree."

    • Aunt Iris: Is Tony Randall dead?
Tony Randall was an American comic actor who passed away in 2004 (from pneumonia, not Aunt Iris's car).

    • Phoebe: Hello kettle? This is Monica. You're black.

Phoebe was referring to the commonly used phrase, "the pot calling the kettle black". It means to say something about someone else which is actually true of you yourself.

    • Chandler: Come on. What was with that whole Black Bart speech? When I play poker, I'm not a nice guy.

Bart Roberts was the most successful pirate of the golden age of piracy. He is estimated to have captured over 470 vessels. He is also known as Black Bart, but this name was never used in his lifetime.

    • Rachel: (to Ross) So basically, you get your ya-yas by taking money from all of your friends.
      Ross(jokingly) Yeah.
Chandler: Yes, and I get my ya-yas from IKEA. You have to put them together yourself, but they cost a little less.
IKEA is a low-cost home products retailer that sells utilitarian design furniture, much of which is assembled by the consumer.

    • Chandler: Rach', Rach', we gotta settle.
      Rachel: Settle what?
Chandler: The Jamestown colony of Virgina. You see, King George is giving us the land so ...
The Jamestown Settlement was the first permanent English settlement in North America, named after King James I of England, in the Virginia Colony in 1607.

    • Chandler: Could you... want her any more?
      Ross: Who?
Chandler: Dee, the sarcastic sister from What's Happening!!
What's Happening!! was an American sitcom that ran in the 1970's. The show dealt with the antics of three working class African-American teens living in the Watts area of Los Angeles.

    • Chandler: You know, I can't believe you. Linda is so great! Why won't you go out with her again?
      Ross: I don't know.
Chandler: Is this still about her whole The Flintstones could have really happened thing?

The Flintstones is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. Inspired by The Honeymooners, The Flintstones was about a working class caveman's life with his family and his next door neighbor.

    • Monica: Do you really want a job with Popular Mechanics?
Chandler: Well, if you're gonna work for mechanics, those are the ones to work for.

Popular Mechanics is an American magazine devoted to science and technology.

    • In the opening scene, the gang is whistling the main theme from the film, The Bridge on the River Kwai, called "Colonel Bogey March."
