Phoebe opens up Rachel's mail and says that she has a huge Visa bill, yet in the previous episode "The One With Two Parts" Rachel's credit card company calls and says that there has been unusual activity on her account because she hasn't been spending. If she hasn't been spending then her Visa bill would not be huge...
Goof: When Rachel raised the bet after she found out that she wasn't hired, the reflection of the moving camera and camera operator are visible on the window behind Monica.
Trivia: When Rachel impressively shuffles the cards she is using a trick deck.
Continuity: Rachel seems surprised by her lack of typing ability, however in "The One with Mrs. Bing" we learned that when everybody was reading her manuscript.
Goof: When Marcel is dancing, you can clearly see the reflection of someone directing him by moving their hand up and down.
Trivia: Marcel was not actually dancing in this episode. The clip was just looped.
Rachel: Oh, I beg to differ. The Pictionary incident? Monica: That was not an incident! I was gesturing, and the plate slipped out of my hand.
Joey: You know what, you guys? It's their first time, why don't we just forget about the money, alright? Monica: Hell no, we'll pay! Phoebe: Okay, Monica? I had another answer all ready.
Phoebe: (To Joey) Oh I see, so then, you were lying. Joey: About what? Phoebe: About how good your cards were. Joey: I was bluffing. Phoebe: Aha! And what is bluffing? Is it not another word for lying?
Phoebe: (Reading Rachel's mail) Wow! Rachel: What? Phoebe: Your Visa bill is huge!
Rachel: Hey, look, you guys, I'm going for anything here, okay? I cannot be a waitress anymore, I mean it. I'm sick of the lousy tips, I'm sick of being called "Excuse me..."
Rachel: How come you guys never play poker with us? Phoebe:Yeah is that some kind of guy thing? Like some sexist guy thing? Like it's poker so only guys can play? Ross: No, women are welcome to play. Phoebe: So it's like some kind of... it's some kind of... Okay, what is it?
Ross: Your money's mine, Green. Rachel: Your fly is open, Geller.
Phoebe: I think you should know, this money is cursed. Joey: Huh? Phoebe: Yeah, I cursed it. So now bad things will happen to he who spends it. Chandler: I'll take it, bad things happen to me anyway. At least this way I can break them up with a movie.
Monica: Let's play for real. High stakes, big bucks. Ross: Are you sure, because Phoebe just threw away two jacks because they didn't look happy.
Phoebe: Okay, Joey, your bet. Joey: I fold like a cheap hooker who got hit in the stomach by a fat guy with sores on his face. (The girls look at him, confused.) Oh, I'm out.
Rachel: Boy, you really can't stand to lose, can you? Your whole face is getting red... little veins popping out on your temple... Phoebe: Plus that shirt doesn't really match those pants.
Ross: Rach, did you proofread these? Rachel: Uh. yeah, why? Ross: Uh, nothing, I'm sure they'll be impressed with your excellent compuper skills. Rachel: Oh my God. Oh, do you think it's on all of them? Joey: Oh no. I'm sure the Xerox machine caught a few.
Rachel: (After winning a hand of poker. Sing-song to Ross) I have got your money, and you'll never see it, and your fly's still open. (Pause) Rachel: Ha, I made you look.
Rachel: Can you believe what a jerk Ross was being? Monica: Yeah, I know. He can get really competitive. Phoebe: Ha, haha. Monica: What? Phoebe: Oh, hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.
Phoebe: Hey, you know what I just realised? 'Joker' is 'poker' with a 'J'. Coincidence? Chandler: Hey, that's 'joincidence' with a 'C'.
Rachel: Hmmm, it's so typical: 'Ooh... I'm a man, ooh... I have a penis, ooh... I have to win money to observe my power over women.'
International Episode Title: Czech Republic: Hráči pokeru (Poker Players)
According to an interview on Oprah, this is David Schwimmer's favorite episode.
This episode runs 25:02 on DVD (a typical sitcom runs about 22:00). Extras include guys dancing as Marcel plays "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," another scene with Aunt Iris, and a bunch of lines here and there.
Music: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by The Tokens
While the gang is playing Pictionary in the tag scene, two movies are depicted. Bye Bye Birdie is a Broadway musical satire on American society. The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a novel written by Milan Kundera in 1982 and made into an American movie in 1988.
Rachel: Guys, guess what, guess what, guess what, guess what! Chandler: The fifth dentist caved, now they're all recommending Trident? Trident Gum is famous for their slogan, "Four out of five dentists agree."
Aunt Iris: Is Tony Randall dead? Monica: I don't think so. Aunt Iris: Well he may be now, because I think I hit him with my car. Tony Randall was an American comic actor who passed away in 2004 (from pneumonia, not Aunt Iris's car).
Phoebe: Hello kettle? This is Monica. You're black. Phoebe was referring to the commonly used phrase, "the pot calling the kettle black". It means to say something about someone else which is actually true of you yourself.
Chandler: Come on. What was with that whole Black Bart speech? When I play poker, I'm not a nice guy. Bart Roberts was the most successful pirate of the golden age of piracy. He is estimated to have captured over 470 vessels. He is also known as Black Bart, but this name was never used in his lifetime.
Rachel: (To Ross) So basically, you get your ya-yas by taking money from all of your friends. Ross: (Pause) Yeah. Chandler: Yes and I get my ya-yas from IKEA. You have to put them together yourself, but they cost a little less. IKEA is a low-cost home products retailer that sells utilitarian design furniture, much of which is assembled by the consumer.
Chandler: Rach, Rach, we gotta settle. Rachel: Settle what? Chandler: The Jamestown colony of Virgina. You see, King George is giving us the land so ... The Jamestown Settlement was the first permanent English settlement in North America, named after King James I of England, in the Virginia Colony in 1607.
Chandler: Could you want her anymore? Ross: Who? Chandler: Dee, the sarcastic sister from What's Happening!! What's Happening!! was an American sitcom that ran in the 1970's. The show dealt with the antics of three working class African-American teens living in the Watts area of Los Angeles.
Chandler: You know, I can't believe you. Linda is so great! Why won't you go out with her again? Ross: I don't know. Chandler: Is this still about her whole The Flintstones could have really happened thing? The Flintstones is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions. Inspired by The Honeymooners, The Flintstones was about a working class caveman's life with his family and his next door neighbor.
Monica: Do you really want a job with Popular Mechanics? Chandler: Well, if you're gonna work for mechanics, those are the ones to work for. Popular Mechanics is an American magazine devoted to science and technology.
The gang whistle the theme to the film, The Bridge on the River Kwai, called "Colonel Bogey March."
