Episode Summary

Joey seems to have finally hit big when he gets offered a lead part in a movie shooting outside of Las Vegas, however, when Chandler begins expressing doubts about the film's legitimacy, it causes a rift in their friendship. A simple eye-infection gives Rachel more trouble than she bargained for. Phoebe isn't speaking to Ross, but can't remember why.

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • The King and Eye!!!!

Well I like how Joey finally got a career he can build on and him 7 Chandler get in a fight. I haven't seen a fight this big since last season with Kathy. Well besides that, my favorite plot is Rachel's eye infection. Probably the best scene of Friends is the end when they attack Rachel so she can get her eye drops in. Eye personally agree with Rachel, having things in my eye is just weird and uncomfortable. Anyways sort of a cliffhanger in the end. Joey stays in Vegas but his movie gets shut down. That sucks for him. I guess Chandler was right!moreless
  • Joey gets a lead part in a movie just outside of Los Vegas. Chandler had doubts and it causes problems in their friendship.

Good episode. I know the next two will be awesome. I don't know why touching your eye so bad, I have done it tons of times. At the end when everyone attacked Rachel she should of kept her eyes shut. Does no one have a car except Phoebe who had that taxi?! They could easy buy a used car for cheap and does Rachel take a bus to work because that just cost more money. Joey leaves Chandler on the bridge. Haha. That would suck. Did he just walk along the side of the road where there are no foot paths with fast cars coming?moreless
  • Joey gets angry with Chandler when he says he doesn't believe that the movie Joey's going to Las Vegas to shoot is going to be his "big break." Phoebe's angry at Ross but can't remember why. Joey goes to Vegas alone, only to learn Chandler was right.moreless

This episode is great for a couple reasons: it advances the plot (Joey going to Vegas = the Friends go to Vegas = Monica and Chandler almost get married and Rachel and Ross do) and has some very clever dialogue. Phoebe introduces a game that helps the Friends figure out what they really want when making a decision, which later comes in handy when Ross tries to get Phoebe to remember why she is mad at him. The reason ends up being classic quirky Phoebe--Ross called her a dream.

My favorite part of the whole episode, however, is when Joey and Chandler are in the car and Joey tells Chandler to "clear his mind" and Chandler says, "Ok, it's completely clear, except for a little purple lamp. Is that ok?" Whenever anyone tells me to clear my mind now, I picture purple lamps.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (10)

    • Continuity: When Rachel is first trying to put eye drops in her eye, she is looking in a mirror that is on the wall right beside the girls' bathroom door. It is there throughout this episode, but in prior and subsequent episodes, there is a picture hanging there instead. In all likelihood, the mirror was needed for this one scene, but would prove to be a problem as a regular feature, since reflections would have to be dealt with.

    • Trivia: Chandler doesn't believe in ghosts.

    • Trivia: In the Friends spinoff Joey, there is an episode with almost the same title as this one called "Joey and the Big Break". Unlike this episode where the movie gets delayed and later cancelled, Joey does succeed in becoming a movie star and lives up to that show's episode title.

    • Factual Error: When Chandler arrives back at Central Perk, he says Joey kicked him out of the cab on the George Washington Bridge. However the exterior shot shown was of the Manhattan Bridge, which runs over the East River in the opposite direction of Las Vegas.

    • Goof: When Rachel and Monica leave their apartment to go to the eye doctor, Rachel turns left instead of right while the door is closing.

    • Goof: When Joey kicks Chandler out of the cab on the bridge, the background doesn't slow down with the car or the audio track. In the next shot the cab and the background have stopped. Then when Joey takes off again, the background doesn't move even though the audio track is heard.

    • Goof: When Joey first arrives in the desert, there is a lot of equipment sitting out. When the director gets into his car to leave, the equipment is still sitting out. A minute later when Joey gets the balloons, all the equipment is gone and the vans are leaving.

    • Trivia: Rachel says that Monica "really is freakishly strong". This is mentioned in other episodes, such as "The One with the Cop".

    • Goof: In the first scene after the opening credits when Ross is saying goodbye to everyone, the camera shoots to Phoebe and you can hear the door opening. When the camera shoots back to Ross, the door is closed and then he opens it.

    • Goof: When Rachel knocks the cereal box off the counter it moves between shots. When it first falls it is next to the kitchen counter. But when it is shown in the next shot, it has moved about a foot to the left and is now in front of the blue counter.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Chandler: Richard? Ugh, that's all I ever hear... "Richard, Richard, Richard".
Monica: Since we've been going out I might have mentioned his name twice.
      Chandler: Okay, so, "Richard, Richard".

    • Rachel: All right fine, I have a weird thing with my eye. Can we just not talk about it, please.
      Everyone: Alright.
Monica: Hey Rach'? You know that great song, "Me, Myself, and... (almost touching her own eye) Eye!?"
      (Rachel freaks out)
Ross: Hey. Does anyone want to get some lunch? All those in favor say... (almost touching his own eye) Eye!
      Rachel: Ross! Stop it!
Chandler: How much did I love The King and... (almost touching his own eye) Eye?!
      Rachel: Chandler!
Joey: (touches his own eye repeatedly) Me too! Me too!
(The group keeps poking at their eyes)
Rachel: Stop it, stop it! C'mon!
Joey: (rubs his eye in pain) Owww!
      Chandler: You okay there, man?
Joey: Yeah, I got too excited.

    • Phoebe: You wanna be on my list too? Keep talking! Has anyone seen my list by the way?
Chandler: Uh, no Pheebs. What's it look like?
Phoebe: Uh, it's a piece of paper and it says "Ross" on it.

    • Chandler: (about going on the road trip) Whoa, whoa, whoa, what are we going to do about my job?
      Joey: Oh, um, not go.

    • Phoebe: (about which route to take to Vegas) Oh, if you take the northern route there's a man in Illinois with a beard of bees.
      Joey: Great! Problem solved!
Phoebe: But on the southern route there's a chicken that plays tic-tac-toe.
Joey: (frustrated) Well, back to square one.

    • Joey: Who would you rather sleep with Monica or Rachel?
      Ross: Dude, you are sick.
Joey: Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot you had that whole Rachel thing.

    • Rachel: Y'know, I gotta tell ya, those eye drops are a miracle... my eye is 100% better!
Monica: They're still in my coat.
      Rachel: Damn!

    • Joey: Hey! You ready to go?
Chandler: Yeah, listen, how cold is it going to be there? Do I need a coat or will all these sweater vests be enough?

    • Joey: Man, I wish Ross was coming with us, y'know? I'm gonna miss him!
Phoebe: Thanks a lot, I just got that jerk out of my mind!

    • Ross: I just wanna say goodbye to you guys and to see if you guys will place a little bet for me, huh? Twenty bucks on black-fifteen.
      Joey: You got it!
Ross: Alright! (Joey mimes "No way!" to Chandler)

    • Ross: Phoebe, are you, are you mad at me or something? 'Cause if you are, please tell me what it is I did!
Phoebe: Well if you don't know, I can't help you.
      Ross: Well, I don't know.
Phoebe: Well, I can't help you.

    • Joey: (driving) I'm getting pretty tired. You'll have to take over soon.
Chandler: We've been driving for a half-hour!  ...and you haven't looked at the road once!
Joey: Don't worry. It's out there.

    • Ross: Okay, are you mad at me because my hair gel smells?
      Phoebe: No.
Ross: Are you angry at me because I said your handwriting is childlike?
Phoebe: No, that made me feel precious.

    • Chandler (about Joey): I don't know, he went crazy. You know we were playing that game where you ask a question then you have to answer it really fast.
Phoebe: Oh, that game should not be played without my supervision.

    • Chandler: (about Joey kicking him out of the car on the bridge) Well, I don't know what made him so mad, y'know? All I said was that I didn't think this was going to be his big break, that this movie wasn't going to do anything for him and that, y'know, it didn't sound like a real movie... Okay, he should have pushed me off the bridge.

    • (Monica is trying to put eye drops in Rachel's eye)
      Monica: My pillow's all wet!
Rachel: Yeah, well, you said it was practice.
Monica: Then why did you move?
Rachel: Because I knew you were lying!

    • (Monica and Rachel are on the floor after wrestling with the eye drops)
Rachel: You know, if Chandler or Joey walked in right now, we could make a fortune.
