Season 7 Episode 16

The One with Joey's New Brain

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Feb 15, 2001 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Goof: This is perhaps a silly observation considering the preposterous nature of the soap opera plot, but with Jessica's brain, Dr. Drake Ramoray would no longer have any medical knowledge or skills.

    • Trivia: When Joey tries to hit on the actress who plays Dina, Jessica Lockhart's daughter, she tells him she's sixteen. In reality, Eva Amurri, who plays her, was fifteen when she shot the episode.

    • Trivia: In this episode we learn that Chandler is half Scottish and half Swedish.

    • Continuity: In this episode Phoebe says that she lives in 5 Morton Street Apt. 14. However, in "The One In Massapequa" the number on her apartment door is 16.

    • Goof: Jennifer Aniston stifles a laugh when Phoebe begins singing along to Ross's bagpipe playing towards the end of the episode.

    • Goof: When Rachel is about to leave Phoebe's apartment, she has her bag on her left shoulder, but when the shot changes she has the bag in her left hand.

    • Goof: When Monica and Chandler hear Ross playing the bagpipes, Monica puts her spoon down in her bowl but is still holding the handle. When the shot changes, her hand is on the table and the spoon is gone from the bowl.

    • Goof: When Ross, Chandler and Monica are in Central Perk discussing playing bagpipes, Ross closes his book to talk to them. A few shots later, the book is open in his lap. The in the very next shot, the book is closed again.

    • Goof: When Joey and Cecilia are on the set, talking about the death of her character at the snack table, her hands are clasped, but when the shot changes, her arms are crossed.

    • Goof: When Rachel enters Joey's apartment and sees Jessica, she closes the door behind her. When she runs out to get Monica the door is open.

    • Goof: When Joey and Jessica are first talking and she's sitting down on the set, she has a cigarette in her hands. When the camera angle changes, she has a drink in her hand and then it's back to a cigarette.

  • Quotes

    • Joey: My character is coming out of his coma!
      Chandler: That's great!
Joey: Yeah, and not only that, I'm gettin' a new brain!
Chandler: So great things are happening at work... and in your personal life!

    • Ross: What? A brain transplant?!
Joey: Yes, its a highly controversial procedure.
      Ross: It's ridiculous!
Joey: Well, I think it's ridiculous that you haven't had sex in three and a half months.
Ross: (sheepishly) It's winter. There are fewer people on the street.

    • Monica: (about Ross's idea to play the bagpipes during the wedding) Why is your family Scottish?
Chandler: Why is your family Ross?!

    • Monica: You can not play bagpipes at the wedding!
Ross: How did you know about that?
Chandler: We heard you play all the way from your apartment!
Ross: Were you the ones who called the cops?
Chandler: That's not really important right now. What is important is, while we appreciate the gesture, we just don't feel bagpipes are appropriate for our wedding.
      Ross: Why not?
      Chandler: Because we hate them!

    • Cecilia: (coming out of Joey's bedroom) Well, you certainly "owned" that room.
Joey: Actually, I rent the whole place... and I just got what you meant... Thank-you.
      Rachel: (entering) Hey.
      Joey: Hi.
Rachel: (sees Cecilia) Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, Jessica Lockhart! In my apartment! I am such a huge fan! I am such a huge fan!
Cecilia: Well, it's nice to know that your work--
Rachel: Monica! Monica! (runs out the door)
      Joey: That's my roommate, Rachel.
Cecilia: Oh, that explains all the women's underwear!
      Joey : Uh... sure.
(Rachel and Monica come back in)
Monica: Oh, my God... it's true! You are so amazing! Can I just ask you to do me one favor?
      Cecilia: Certainly.
Monica : Would you slap me? Would you slap me right here in the face?!
Cecilia: I'd love to, but my lawyer says I can't do that anymore.
Rachel: Wow. You seem really, really nice.
      Joey: Okay, buh-bye.
Rachel: I mean not fake at all, like most famous people.
Joey : Alright, here we go. (starts pushing Rachel and Monica towards the door)
Monica: Okay, just one more thing, just one more thing. (up close to Cecilia) You're a stupid bitch!
Cecilia: I really can't slap you.

    • Cecilia: (about her character Jessica's death) How does it happen?
Joey: (reading from the script) You get thrown from a horse into an electric fence.
      Cecilia: Jessica hates horses!
Joey: After this, I'm guessing she won't be too wild about electricity, either.

    • Ross: (about to play the bagpipes) Now remember, you have to imagine me in a kilt.
Rachel: I can imagine you in a short plaid skirt and knee socks.
Ross: Do you wanna start telling secrets?

    • Cecilia: It's a film in Guadalajara.
      Joey: The airport?
      Cecilia: That's LaGuardia!

  • Notes

    • International Episode Title:
France: Celui qui avait un cerveau tout neuf (The One with a Brand New Brain)

    • Susan Sarandon (Cecilia Monroe) received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in this episode.

    • Eva Amurri, who plays Jessica Lockhart's daughter, is Susan Sarandon's real-life daughter.

    • Eva Amurri and Susan Sarandon will later play mother and daughter again in the 2002 comedy The Banger Sisters, also starring Goldie Hawn.

    • Matt LeBlanc was nervous about performing with Susan Sarandon.

    • Kevin S. Bright was nervous about directing this episode, since Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon's long-time boyfriend, was in the studio.

    • Due to the Conan O'Brien special that aired immediately after this episode in its original broadcast, there is no tag scene. When aired in syndication, a repeat of the scene where Ross plays the bagpipes is shown. On the DVD, it is simply the cast dancing around the fountain, as is also used as the tag scene for most of the season finale episodes.

    • When filming the scene where Rachel talks into two cell phones at once, Jennifer Aniston's real phone was used for one of them. It rang at the right time, dialed by someone actually calling the actress. This outtake can be seen in the Season 7 gag reel.

    • When originally aired on NBC, this episode was 40 minutes long, as counter-programming to Survivor. Although this is the third extra-long format episode to air, it was actually the first one written specifically for a longer time slot. The episode features three acts, as opposed to the normal two. The airing of a 20-minute special featuring Conan O'Brien interviewing the cast and showing outtakes from the series followed the airing of this episode.

    • This episode runs 28:38 on DVD (a typical sitcom runs about 22:00).
