The One with Phoebe's Ex-Partner

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Feb 06, 1997 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Trivia: This is the first time we see the restroom area of Central Perk.

    • Phoebe's Songs:
      "Sticky Shoes"
My favorite shoes, so good to me, I wear them everyday.
Down at the heel, holes in the toes, don't care what people say.
My feet's best friends, pals to the end, with them I'm one hot chicky.
Though late one night, not much light, I stepped in something icky.
Sticky shoes, sticky shoes, always make me smile.
Sticky shoes, sticky shoes, next time I'll avoid the pile.

      "Jingle Bitch"
Jingle Bitch screwed me over! Go to hell Jingle Whore!
Go to hell, go to hell, go to hell-hell-hell.

    • Trivia: This is the first time we hear Phoebe's song "Sticky Shoes". We hear another version in "The One with Joey's New Girlfriend" when Phoebe has her sexy head-cold voice.

    • Goof: When Monica comes in and asks Chandler if she can borrow some milk, Chandler is reading a paper that is flat on the bar. In the next shot he is holding it folded, then he lays it on the counter, and suddenly it is in his hands again.

    • Goof: When Joey is telling his story about Ginger, a large section of Phoebe's hair falls in front of her face. In the next shot it's gone, even though her hands are visible the whole time.

    • Goof: In the end tag scene Chandler comes in with his hands by his sides then it suddenly cuts and his hands are in his pockets.

    • Goof: When Ginger is leaving after being grossed out by Chandler's third nipple, she takes her coat, but her purse is lying on the counter. When the camera angle changes, her purse is suddenly in her hand.

  • Quotes

    • Leslie: (performing in Central Perk on "Open Mic Nite") Okay, my next song's called, "Phoebe Buffay, What Can I Say? I Really Loved When We Were Singing Partners, And I Shouldn't Have Left You That Way."
Phoebe: Oh, no... One of those look-for-the-hidden-meaning songs...

    • Leslie: (to Phoebe, her former singing partner) Well, I... y'know, I was just, um, I was just thinkin'... and just hopin' that... mm... maybe you'd wanna get back together?
      Phoebe: (curtly) No... but thanks.
Leslie: Aw, c'mon Phoebe, would you just think about it?
Phoebe: Okay... (pretends to think about it) No... but thanks.

    • Rachel: I've got some bad news.
      Ross: What?
Rachel: I can get a quick bite to eat, but then I have to come back up here.
Ross: C'mon sweetie! You've had to work late every night for the past two weeks! What is it this time?
Mark: Actually, it's kinda my fault. I, I quit today.
Ross: (to Rachel) But work comes first!

    • Monica: (about Leslie) Wow, she must have hurt you pretty bad, huh?
Phoebe: Well, yeah. Y'know, we were best friends... ever since we were little. Our Moms worked on the barge together.
Monica: Oh, you two must have been so cute running around on a barge.
Phoebe: (admonishing) You never run on a barge!

    • Joey: (explaining to Monica and Phoebe about his breakup with Ginger) It was, like, four years ago... Ginger and I had gone out a few times, and then this one weekend, we went up to her Dad's cabin. Just me, her, and... her annoying little dog Pepper. Well, that night, I cooked this really romantic dinner...
Monica: You gave her food poisoning!
Joey: I wish! ...After dinner, me, her and Pepper all fell asleep in front of the fire. Well, I woke up in the middle of the night and I saw that the fire was dying out, so... I picked up a log and threw it on... or, at least what I thought was a log...
Phoebe: Oh, my God! You threw Pepper on the fire!
Joey: I wish! ...See, I guess another thing I prob'ly shoulda told you about Ginger is that she kinda has a, uh... artificial leg.
      Monica: Oh, my God!
Phoebe: You threw it on the fire...?
Monica: What?! She must've freaked out!!
      Joey: Yeah... She must've...
      Phoebe: You don't know...?
      Joey: Well... I...
Monica: Joey! What did you do after you threw her leg on the fire?!
      Joey: I ran!

    • Ross: (about Rachel attending a lecture with Mark) Well, I'm sorry, but, uh, look... If you're not working with him anymore, why do you have to still do stuff with him?
      Rachel: Because, he's my friend.
Ross: Okay, but do you really need another friend? I mean...
Rachel: Okay, well if I stop playing with Joey and Chandler, can I play with Mark?
Ross: Is that funny? Am I supposed to be laughing?
Ross: I don't know, you thought "See you Saturday" was funny.

    • Phoebe: (about Leslie) When we were playing together, that was the best time I've had in, like... all my lives.

    • Monica: (coming into Chandler's apartment, points at a bottle of milk) Can I borrow this? My milk's gone bad.
Chandler: I hate that. I once had a thing of half-and-half? ...stole my car.

    • Ross: A hundred million people went to see a movie about what I do, I wonder how many people would go see a movie called Jurassic Parka.
      Rachel: Oh, that is so--
Ross: No-no-no... a bunch of out-of-control jackets take over an island! (Ross squeals and fights his way out of his topcoat).

    • Chandler: Just had me a little nubbinectomy. Yep! Two nipples, no waiting.
Monica: Wow. Just like Rachel in High School.
      Rachel: What?
Monica: C'mon! C'mon, I was kidding! It was such an obvious joke!
Chandler: That was an obvious joke, and I didn't think of it. Why didn't I think of it? ...The source of all my powers! Oh, dear God! What have I done?!

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Ross: A hundred million people went to see a movie about what I do. I wonder how many people would go see a movie called Jurassic Parka.
The movie Ross refers to and creates a parody title of is Jurassic Park, a 1993 sci-fi thriller adapted from a novel by Michael Crichton about genetically engineered dinosaurs.

    • Monica: No, it was Ginger. I remember because when he told me, I said... (singing) "The movie star..."
Monica sings a line from the theme song for Gilligan's Island, an American TV sitcom in which one of the regular characters is a movie star named "Ginger".
