Episode Summary

Chandler can't deal with the fact that Kathy simulates sex, half-naked, in a play, with a very handsome man. After Rachel is demoted to personal shopper, she is in a hard place after she discovers that she likes a customer, but he won't ask her out. And Monica wants to play hostess again after telling Joey that since he now has the bigger apartment, he must constantly have company over.moreless

Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • Kathy's final appearance.

Well after Kathy started this whole commotion wit Joey & Chandler & risks their friendship, she sleeps with another guy. That was pretty sad for Chandler. I like Rachel's plot. I have never seen a girl ask out a guy & I like the interpretation in this episode. Looks like Rachel has a new office & a new boss. The arc with trading apartments has continued. Monica's plot was one of the funniest. She always has to be the hostess. I like what she did to the apartment. At the end, It looks like this Joshua character is coming back for more. I love all these recurring characters! I will miss Kathy though.moreless
  • It's like someone literally wrote down my worst nightmare and then charged me $32 to see it! - Chandler

Chandler and Ross go see a play where Kathy's the star in. Chandler is finally happy that he can have sex with the star of the play untill he finds out that Kathy has to have sex with a incredibly handsome man named Nick(we don't see him). He gets jealous and gets into a fight and they break up when Kathy actually sleeps with Nick and they break up. I didn't really like Kathy but I kind of wanted her to come back for one more appearance when Chandler was with Monica.

Rachel gets a crush on a man named Joshua. Not that he was a great character but Rachel's crush and the way she acts around him is so funny. Monica can't stand the fact that she doesn't live in the big appartment anymore. Because she always has to be the hostess she gives the small apartment a makeover.

The best part of this episode was when Joey told Rachel and Phoebe how he picks up women and we hear the famous line "Hey, how you doin'?" for the first time.moreless
  • A classic

This episode is a classic and has many important story lines throughout it. It has the start of the relationship between Rachel and Joshua and the end of Chandler's relationship with Kathy. Chandler believes that kathy is sleeping with her acting partner,Nick. Rachel in her new job gets a client called Joshua and immediately has a massive crush on him, hence the name of the episode. Monica is feeling left out in the boy's old apartment about not being the hostess and ends up cleaning whole apartment. The episode is great and ahs many hilarious quotes including a metion of the whole "we were on a break" situation. A must see!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Trivia: After seeing Kathy's play a second time, Chandler says that there was no heat between her and Nick, that "it was like cousins having sex up there!". In Season 7's "The One with Ross and Monica's Cousin", however, Ross felt more than a little heat for his cousin Cassie (Denise Richards).

    • Continuity: In this episode Rachel calls Joshua, Josh. But in "The One with Joey's Dirty Day" she says she doesn't like the name Josh, she likes Joshua.
Note: Actually, Rachel never calls him Josh. When going on about how much she loves his name, at one point she says dramatically, "Josh... oo-ah!", but since there is a pause after "Josh", one might think that's all she called him.

    • Goof: In the scene where Rachel walks into the guy's new apartment and they start talking about Joshua, it cuts to a shot of her profile as she says "It's just so frustrating". Her mouth doesn't move as she says the words.

    • Goof: At the start of this episode when Rachel comes in, you can see a bit of wooden floor by the door (carpet's visible in other shots). However, Monica doesn't pull up the carpet until later in the episode.
Note: There was never carpet near the door. It began in the living room beyond the kitchen area. This is particularly visible several episodes earlier in "The One Where Chandler Crosses the Line" when there is still no furniture in the apartment.

    • Magna Doodle: Have You Seen Our View?!

    • Trivia: Joey's pick-up line, "How you doin'?", which debuted in this episode, was ranked #4 in TV Guide's list of "TV's 20 Top Catchphrases" (21-27 August 2005 issue).

  • QUOTES (18)

    • Chandler: Okay, she is the star of the play. And she is my girlfriend! I get to have sex with the star of the play!
Ross: (aside to Chandler) People can hear you!
Chandler: (loudly and proudly) I know!

    • Rachel: Monica, I'm quitting. I just helped an 81 year old woman put on a thong and she didn't even buy it!

    • Joey: The rule is when two actors are actually doing it off-stage all the sexual tension between them is gone. Okay? So as long as it's hot onstage you got nothing to worry about. It's when the heat goes away, that's when you're in trouble.
      Chandler: Really?
Joey: Look, you guys have been to every play I've ever been in, have I ever had chemistry on stage?
      Ross: No.
      Joey: No-o-o!

    • Kathy: Chandler, this is my job! I'm playing a part in a play. How can you not trust me?
Chandler: Well, you can understand, given how we started.
Kathy: Oh, wow. I can't believe you're throwing that in my face.
Chandler: Well, that is what happened, and I don't even see you denying this!
Kathy: I'll tell you what, Chandler, why don't you call me when you grow up!
Chandler: Yeah, well, don't expect that to happen anytime soon!

    • Chandler: (yells drunkenly) Slut! (the guys follow him into the girls apartment) You'll all be very happy to hear that Kathy is sleeping with that guy!
      Rachel: What?
      Phoebe: No!
      Ross: So you were right?
Chandler: I confronted her and she didn't deny it... (looks around his former apartment) I don't live here!

    • Monica: Come on in here, I've got delicious treats for everyone.
      Joey: Hey, a Playboy!
Monica: Yeah, just something I picked up.
Ross: Wow! Cookies and porn, you're the best mom ever!

    • Joshua: (about his ex-wife) She burned all my clothes. I only got away with two things: this suit and what turned out to be a skirt.
Rachel: At least that's a great suit.
Joshua: Yeah, but it wasn't much fun dropping it off at the dry-cleaners in the skirt.

    • Rachel: I have the best job in the world! Today the cutest guy came into work, and I got to dress him up all day!
Phoebe: Rachel has a new doll!

    • Joey: (about asking someone out) What I do is, I look a woman up and down, and I say "Hey. How you doin'?"

    • Chandler: (about Kathy) What if she didn't actually sleep with the guy?
Joey: Dude, tell me she actually told you this.
Chandler: She did not have to tell me, I saw the play, and there was no heat. Back me up here, Ross!
Ross: That's all you're basing this on?
Chandler: That's not backing me up! Look, you said with the off-stage and the heat, and the onstage and the no heat.
Joey: Whoa, whoa, that, that was just a theory! There's a lot of theories that didn't pan out. The lone gunman. Communism. Geometry.
      Chandler: Oh, my God!

    • Monica: People are supposed to wanna hang out here!
Rachel: Why? Honey, what is the big deal?
Monica: I'm the hostess! Not those guys! I'm always the hostess! I mean, even when I was little, the girls brought their dollies to my tea party... I, I served the best air.

    • Rachel: So I was with Joshua for an hour today, and he has not asked me out. It's just so frustrating!
Phoebe: Why don't you ask him out?
Joey: Oh, yeah, totally! That's such a turn-on!
Rachel: Really? It doesn't seem desperate?
      Joey: Ooh-hoo, that's the turn-on.

    • Ross: So the first time you ask a guy out, he, he turns you down?
Rachel: He didn't turn me down! He's at the game, isn't he? I got the date, I'm just not on it!

    • Monica: (about Joey opening her fridge) Excuse me. We switched apartments. You can't eat our food anymore. That gravy train has ended.
      Joey: There's gravy?

    • Joey: How'd it go?
Chandler: So she wasn't sleeping with that guy...
      Phoebe: Well, that's good!
      Chandler: She is now.

    • Ross: (about Kathy cheating on Chandler) Well, if she thought they were on a break...

    • Phoebe: (about Rachel laughing) What? What?
Rachel: Well, it was just something Joshua said about V-necks... but you had to be there.
Ross: Yeah, so how does Jason look in a V-neck?
      Rachel: It's Joshua.
      Ross: Uh, whatever...

    • Phoebe: Oh, hey, Mon? Do you still have, like, your old blouses and dresses from high school?
Monica: Yeah, I think I have some around here somewhere. Why?
Phoebe: Well, it's just that maternity clothes are so expensive.

  • NOTES (6)

    • Joey: The new Playboy.

Playboy is an American adult entertainment magazine, founded in 1953 by Hugh Hefner.

    • Joey: Chandler, look, they're actors. They're there to do a job. Just because they work together, doesn't mean they're going to get together. I mean, just 'cause it happened with Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, doesn't mean it's gonna happen with them.
Ross: Oh, oh! Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
Joey: Oh! Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
      Ross: Yeah.
Phoebe: Hey, Mel Gibson and Clint Eastwood.
      Ross: They're not a couple.
Phoebe: Oh, okay, I get the game now.
