Who was the Episode MVP ?

  • Season 2 Premiere

A momentous episode of Friends. I'm sure the entire fanbase was waiting in anticipation for this episode. This was definitely a series classic to say the least. We've got Rachel waiting at the airport and Ross getting off the plane with a new girlfriend. That's definitely a way of complicating matters. We got some really great scenes from Jennifer Aniston tonight. All her interactions with Ross were fantastic and she was easily the one who stole the show tonight.

As for the subplots, they could have been a bit better. I mean we got great comedic timing from both story lines. But the haircut thing just seemed like a drawn-out explanation on why the actor's hairstyles were different. Also Phoebe gave the guys a haircut right when Rachel was going to pick up Ross? Where's the realism? Although the whole gag as Monica as a patient thing was quite funny.

Matthew Perry also did a terrific job with his comedic timing. "You stop when there's resistance!" Although I think this was the point in time where Joey's stupidity was greatly exaggerated. Last season, it was at an acceptable level but you can really tell the difference here. And it only gets worse as the seasons continue. Anyways, overall, this was a great season premiere of Friends. Definitely did the cliffhanger justice.moreless
  • Awesome.

Rachel decides to tell Ross that she loves him and waits for him at the airport, not knowing he is returning with a new girlfriend named Julie thanks to Chandler's advice. Chandler feels guilty because he told Rachel that Ross loves her and had advised Ross to get over his feelings for her. Joey and Chandler get their hair cut by Phoebe. Monica wants her to cut her hair but Phoebe gives her an awful haircut. Chandler needs a suit, so Joey takes him to his tailor, who touches Chandler inappropriately. Chandler tells Joey of this, but Joey insists that is how pants are measured. Ross annoys everyone by talking about Julie, and Rachel becomes so desperate and upset that she spends the night with an old friend, Paulo, Rachel's ex boyfriend. This is like the hundredth time I have watched Friends but my first time reviewing them. Season one ending was awesome, but now it seems like Ross has forgot about Rachel, and Rachel is no starting to fall in love with Ross. I love the way Rachel acts in this episode. I love the way Chandleris in this episode too - I love him in every episode to be honest like everyone else. I love the wya Phoebe cuts Monicas har, I also love the way Joeys tailer is a weirdo. Great episode.moreless
  • Rachel meets Ross at the airport and is devistated to find out that he brought home a girlfriend. Phoebe gives Chandler and Joey haircuts, monica wants one too but Phoebe is reluctant and when she finally agrees the results are disastourus.moreless

In this episode I felt so bad for Rachel. I was so happy that she was finaly going for it with him, it was so sad when you find out that he had finaly taken a different route and decided to go out with someone else. It was kind of amusing though how there roles swiched. How now he was the oblivious one and she was the one jelous and angry that they werent together. I also loved the the haircut part. It was really funny how Phoebe did Joey and Chadler's hair so well but then totally screwed up with Monica's hair. Over all this is a very good episode.moreless
  • Good

Rachel waits patiently at the airport for Ross, not knowing he is returning with a new girlfriend, Julie. Meanwhile, after giving Joey and Chandler new haircuts, Phoebe is persuaded to cut Monica's hair, but gives her an awful haircut. And Joey learns that his tailor is a very naughty man. This was a decent return back for Friends after a good first season. Phoebes's haircuts was funny and Rachel was funny when she found out about Ross and Julie. The season picks up in the next couple of episodes and is proabaly one of Friends best seasons. 9 out of 10.moreless
  • Aw poor rachel!!

Rachel: Isn't that just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic? Rachel: When I saw him get off that plane with her, I really thought I just hit rock bottom. But today, it's like there's rock bottom, then 50 feet of ****, then me. Aww I have a love hate relationship with this episode.

I love it cos its Friends but hate seeing Ross arrive back in NYC with Julie and looking at Rachel as seeing that she is absolutely crushed!!!

But non the less still a great episode of Friends! I love the part when Phoebe is cutting Monica's hair, which goes a little wrong to say the least:

Phoebe: Would you relax? I know what I am doing. This is how he wears it.

    Monica: How who wears it?

    Phoebe: Demi Moore.

Monica: Demi Moore is not a "he!"

Phoebe: Well, he was a "he" in Arthur, and in Ten

Overall a great episode, just sad about Ross and Racel :(!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • Trivia: Interesting that although Phoebe could confuse Dudley Moore and Demi Moore as well as Andie MacDowell and Roddy McDowall, she knew their hairstyles from memory. Of course, if she'd been working from photographs, as one would expect, there would be no confusion, and therefore no comic situation.

    • Goof: After Ross and Julie arrive home from China, Ross says that they need to get some sleep because it is 6 o'clock tomorrow night their time. However, China is only 12 hours ahead and it was nighttime in New York (meaning it would be morning in China).

    • Trivia: Paolo says "Buongiorno a tutti" to the gang, which means "Good Morning to all of you."

    • Continuity: In this episode Joey says that he has been going to the same tailor for 12 years, since he was 15 or 16 years old. This must mean he is about 27 now, and therefore has aged 2 years since "The One with the Birth" where he said he was 25.

    • Trivia: When Ross and Rachel are talking out on the balcony, an instrumental variation on the Friends theme song, "I'll be there for you" can be heard.

    • Goof: When Rachel is trying to leave the airport but falls over the chairs, you can clearly see she lands on a big mat.

    • Continuity: When Monica tells the rest of the gang that Rachel went to the airport and she was going to go for it with Ross, they all looked surprised, even Chandler. In the last episode of Season 1, however, when Rachel was leaving for the airport, she ran into Chandler in the hall and told him it was "a good going to the airport".

  • QUOTES (28)

    • Rachel: (giving the flowers to Julie) These are for you. (speaking slowly, as if Julie barely speaks English) Welcome to our country...
Julie: Thank you. (articulating) I'm from New York.

    • Monica: I'm telling you, she went to the airport, and she's gonna go for it with Ross.
Phoebe: Oh, my God. This is huge. This is bigger than huge. This is like, all right, what's bigger than huge?
      Joey: Um, this?

    • Monica: (realizing) Guys! You got your hair cut!
Chandler: Yes, yes, we did, thanks to Vidal Buffay.
Phoebe: (sounding European) 'Cause, you know, if you don't look good, we don't look good. (laughing) ...I love that voice!

    • Rachel: (bursting into the apartment out of breath) Airport! Airport! Ross... not alone. Julie... arm around her... Cramp... Cramp!
Chandler: Okay, I think she's trying to tell us something... Quick get the verbs.
Rachel: (swats Chandler angrily) You... You... You said he liked me!
(Ross and Julie enter the apartment)
      Rachel: You, you... slow pokes!
Ross: That's okay, Rach'. We got the bags.

    • Julie: (meeting the gang) Hi, but I'm not here; you haven't met me. I'll make a much better first impression tomorrow when I don't have twenty hours of cab and plane on me.

    • Rachel: Julie! Julie, isn't that great? I mean, isn't that just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic?
Monica: (to Julie) It's an expression.

    • Ross: We have to get some sleep. It's really six o'clock tomorrow night our time.
Chandler: Okay, but don't tell me what happens cause I like to be surprised!

    • Ross: (at Central Perk) Hey, Rachel, can I get some coffee?
      Rachel: Yeah, sure.
      Ross: Thank you.
Chandler: Hey, Rach, can I get--
Rachel: Did you talk to him?
      Chandler: Not yet.
      Rachel: Then, no.

    • Ross: There was always this little voice inside that kept saying "It's never gonna happen. Move on". You know whose voice that was?
      Chandler: God?
Ross: (patting Chandler's arm) It was you, pal.
Chandler: Well, maybe it was God doing me. Y'know, 'cause... aside from being almighty, He's also... Well, He's a wiz at voices.

    • Chandler: He said, he said... that they're having a great time. I'm sorry. But, the silver lining, if you wanna see it, is that he made the decision all by himself without any outside help whatsoever.
Rachel: How is that the silver lining?
Chandler: You have to really wanna see it.

    • Monica: Pheebs! You know what I'm thinking?
Phoebe: Oh, okay... (giving it some thought) How... it's been so long since you've had sex, you're wondering if they've changed it?
      (Monica considers Phoebe's guess)
      Phoebe: Not even close?
Monica: No... Although now that's what I'm thinking.

    • Monica: Well, I was thinking that you gave the guys such great haircuts, I thought, maybe you'd like to do mine?
      Phoebe: Oh... (flatly) No.
      Monica: Why not?
Phoebe: Because, I'm just, I'm incredibly anal and an unbelievable control freak.
      Monica: No you're not.
Phoebe: I know I'm not, but you are.

    • Rachel: (about Julie phoning Ross) Excuse me! Who gave her our phone number?
Phoebe: Okay, well who had the motive? Was it the actor? The chef? The masseuse? Or... was it the guy who's dating her?
Joey: Guy who's dating her! Guy who's dating her!

    • Chandler: Hey, anybody know a good tailor?
      Joey: Need some clothes altered?
Chandler: No, no, I'm just looking for a man to draw on me with chalk.
Joey: Why don't you go see Frankie? My family's been going to him forever. He did my first suit when I was fifteen. No, wait, sixteen. No, excuse me, fifteen. All right, when was 1990?
Chandler: Okay, you have to stop the Q-tip when there's resistance!

    • Rachel: Okay, okay, okay. How did this happen to me? How did this happen to me? A week ago, two weeks ago, I was fine. Ross was just Ross. Just this guy. Now he's... (sobbing his name) Ros-s-s! Oh... this really great guy that I can't have.

    • Rachel: (speaking from her partially opened bedroom door) Uh, morning. Do you guys think you could close your eyes for just a sec?
Joey: No no no no no, I'm not falling for that again.
      Phoebe: What's going on?
Rachel: Well, I sort of did a stupid thing last night.
Chandler: What stupid thing did you do?
Paolo: (appearing suddenly in the bedroom doorway) Buongiorno a tutti!

    • Monica: (about sleeping with Paolo) Rachel, how did this happen?
Rachel: I don't know, I just kind of ran into him last night.
      Phoebe: Where?
      Rachel: At his apartment.

    • Ross: Hey, Paolo. What are you doing here?
      Paolo: I do Raquel!

    • Phoebe: (to Paolo) Okay, you're gonna have to not touch my ass.

    • Joey: Hey Chandler, when you see Frankie, tell him Joey Tribbiani says hello. He'll know what it means.
Chandler: Are you sure he's gonna be able to crack that code?

    • Monica: You know it's funny, the last time Paolo was here, my hair was so much shorter and cuter.
Phoebe: All right. Okay, but, but you have to promise that you will not be all like control-y and bossy and Monica about it.

    • Frankie: How long do you want the cuffs?
Chandler: Well, at least as long as I have the pants.

    • Ross: (about Monica's new haircut) How's the hair?
Phoebe: I'm not gonna lie to you Ross, it doesn't look good. I put a clip on one side which seems to have stopped the curling.
      Joey: Can we see her?
Phoebe: Your hair looks too good, I think it would just upset her. Ross, why don't you come on in.

    • Joey: How are you doing?
      Rachel: I'm okay.
Joey: Ooh, that bad, huh? Look, I can sense when women are depressed and vulnerable. It's one of my gifts.
Rachel: When I saw him get off that plane with her, I really thought I hit rock bottom. But today, it's like there's rock bottom, then fifty feet of crap, then me.

    • Joey: I've been with my share of women... In fact, I've been with a lot of people's share of women.

    • Chandler: Joey's tailor... took advantage of me.
      Ross: What?
Joey: No way, I've been going to the guy for twelve years.
Chandler: Oh come on, he said he was going to do my inseem, then he ran his hand up my leg and then there was definite...
      Ross: What?
      Chandler: (closes his eyes) ...cupping.
Joey: That's how they do pants! First they go up one side, they move it over, then they go up the other side then they move it back, and then they do the rear. Ross, will you tell him. Isn't that how a tailor measures pants?
Ross: Yes, yes it is... in prison!

    • Ross: (about Paolo) Okay, um well then I think, uh, I think the guy's scum. I mean it, I mean, I actually, I... I physically hate him.

    • Joey: I swear to God, Dad. That's not how they measure pants!

  • NOTES (8)

    • In Season 1, the lower half of Central Perk's main window is frosted glass. Beginning with this episode, it is clear.

    • International Episode Title:
Czech Republic: Rossova nová přítelkyně (Ross's New Girlfriend)

    • Beginning this season, the view from Monica's windows has changed, especially from the living room. Instead of several buildings seen at a distance in buff brick with fire escapes, there is now only a single red brick wall, very close and with only a few windows visible. There is also an adjoining wall extending from Monica's balcony, suggesting that Monica's and "Ugly-naked-guy's" apartments are in wings of the same building, separated only by a courtyard.

    • This is the final appearance of Cosimo Fusco as Paolo. Paolo was in 4 episodes of Friends.

    • This is the first episode with Ross's name in the title of the episode.

    • This episode has a new opening sequence, showing clips from Season 1.

    • Starting with this episode, Friends moved to 8:00 on Thursdays where it would stay for the remainder of its run.

    • This episode runs 23:58 on DVD (a typical sitcom runs about 22:00), some of the additional dialogue includes Phoebe, Rachel, Monica and Joey arguing over who gave Julie the number to the girls' apartment.
