Season 4 Episode 12

The One with the Embryos

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Jan 15, 1998 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Continuity: In this episode, Phoebe says she's going to let gravity do its job (she lies upside down in a chair, hoping it'll help her become pregnant). But in "The One Where Heckles Dies," Phoebe says she's not sure that she believes in gravity.

    • Factual Error: The use of "gravity" is to aid in fertilization (helping the sperm reach the egg). Since Phoebe's eggs are already fertilized (embryos) it wouldn't make any difference. Of course, that may be the joke.

    • Trivia: When the guys are trying to guess what's in the girls' grocery bag, Ross is doing his dramatic narrator voice. Chandler steps forward to tell him to stop and his eyes look down briefly. He clearly could have seen directly into the bag. He didn't cheat, of course, but easily could have.

    • Goof: In the scene where Phoebe's waiting to be implanted with the embryos, an ultrasound machine is in the background with a visible ultrasound picture of what appears to be a womb, even though Phoebe isn't hooked up to it.

    • Goof: In the lightning round, both teams answer a question incorrectly and Ross moves on to the next question. ("In what part of her body did Monica get a pencil stuck at age fourteen?" "Chandler was how old when he first touched a girl's breast?") When he gets to the girls' final question, "What is Chandler Bing's job?", Rachel answers it incorrectly but he doesn't move on and because they fail to answer the question correctly, they lose the game. As soon as Rachel answered incorrectly, the girls should have been given another question but they ran out of time. The boys got four right (Monica's nickname, Rachel's alleged favorite movie, her actual favorite movie and the number of towel categories Monica had) and the girls only got three right (Joey's favorite food, name of his imaginary best friend and his imaginary friend's job).

    • Continuity: When Ross asks Chandler and Joey the question about his dead Grandmother, he picks up a pink question card even though the category he took it from is purple.

    • Magna Doodle: HAVE YOU SEEN OUR VIEW?!

    • Trivia: In the teaser scene, although it is mussed-up from sleeping, we can see that Chandler's hair is parted on the left side as it normally is. In the next scene, where the guys are guessing the contents of Rachel's shopping bag, Chandler's hair is parted on the right side. When they start playing the who-knows-who-best game, his hair is once again parted on the left side, as usual, and remains that way for the rest of the episode.

    • Continuity: When Chandler and Joey are moving their stuff into Monica and Rachel's apartment, Chandler moves the top part of the Foosball table separately. However, in "The Last One (2)" they are unable to get Chick Jr. and Duck Jr. out of the foosball table because it is all glued together.

    • Phoebe's Song:
Are you in there little fetus?
In nine months will you come greet us?
I will... buy you some Adidas...

    • Goof: In the scene where Monica asks for a rematch and bets Chandler and Joey $100, the boom mic is clearly visible for a couple of seconds at the top of the screen.

    • Goof: In the tag scene when Chandler is sitting on the couch in the new apartment, the rooster is sitting on the back of the couch with his tail facing the window. When Joey comes running out, the shot of the rooster shows his face toward the window, and then in the next shot he has returned to his tail facing the window.

    • Goof: Ross makes up the questions for the quiz. There are two groups of questions, one for the girls and one for the boys. Each one has four categories and there are four questions in each category. From these sixteen questions, Ross asks ten. Therefore there have to be six left for both teams after the quiz. But in one group, seven questions can be seen.

    • Goof: When the friends are talking about the contest to prove who knows each other better, Monica says to Joey "Are you scared?" and Rachel has her arms crossed. Joey says "No" and in the next shot of Rachel she is crossing them again.

    • Factual Error: Several of the grocery items that Rachel buys are a Safeway brand (the soda and cookies), but there aren't any Safeway stores in New York.

    • Goof: When Ross takes a bite of the cookie, he puts it back in the box. In the next shot he is putting the cookie back in the box again.

    • Goof: When Phoebe comes out of the bathroom to announce that she's pregnant with Frank and Alice's child you can see Frank letting go of Alice and taking a step toward Phoebe, but in the very next scene you can see him still having his arm around Alice.

    • Goof: At the end of the episode when Monica says she can't find the garbage bags, the mic can be seen at the top of the screen in the middle.

    • Goof: During the Lighting Round of the trivia game between the guys and girls, Ross tells both teams that they have 30 seconds to answer as many questions as they can. However both teams are given 46 seconds to answer their questions.

  • Quotes

    • Rachel: (rudely awakened by a rooster crowing) What the hell is that? What the hell is that? (to Monica) Is that you?!

    • Rachel: (pounding on Joey and Chandler's door and shouting) Get up! Get up! Get up!
      (Chandler opens the door, bleary-eyed)
      Rachel: What is that noise?!
      Chandler: You...
Joey: It's the chick. She's going through some changes.
      Monica: What kind of changes?
Chandler: The vet seems to think that she's becoming a rooster. (rooster crows) We're getting a second opinion.

    • Phoebe: (about the Chick and the Duck) You guys should get rid of those animals. They shouldn't be living in an apartment.
Rachel: Yeah, especially with all these knives and cookbooks around.

    • Phoebe: "Embryos"? There's more than one?
      Dr. Zane: Five, actually.
Phoebe: Five? Okay, where am I giving birth, in a hospital or a big box under the stairs?

    • Frank: (about implanting the embryos) I was thinkin', what are the odds like if you stuff, like, two-hundred of 'em in there?
Alice: Sweetie, now... she's a woman, not a gumball machine.

    • Ross: According to Chandler, what phenomenon scares the bejesus out of him?
Monica: Michael Flatley, Lord Of The Dance!
      Ross: That is correct.
Joey: (aside to Chandler) The Irish jig guy?!
Chandler: His legs flail about as if independent from his body!

    • Ross: Monica and I had a grandmother who died. You both went to her funeral. Name that grandmother.
      Joey: (aside to Chandler) "Nana"?
Chandler: She has a real name.
      Joey: (suddenly inspired) "Althea"?!
Chandler: "Althea"? What are you doing?!
      Joey: I took a shot.
      Chandler: You're shooting with "Althea"?!
      Ross: "Althea" is correct.
      Chandler: Nice shooting!

    • Ross: Every week the TV Guide comes to Chandler and Joey's apartment. What name appears on the address label?
Rachel: Oh! Chandler gets it! It's "Chandler Bing"!
      Monica: Noooo!
Ross: I'm afraid the TV Guide comes to "Chanandler Bong".
Monica: I knew that! Rachel, use your head!
Chandler: Actually... it's "Miss Chanandler Bong".

    • Ross: What is the name of Chandler's father's all-male burlesque?
      Monica: "Viva Las Gay-gas!"
Chandler: (embarrassed) Unfortunately, that is correct.

    • Ross: Alright, we have a tie. Luckily, I have prepared for such an event. (pulls out flashcards) The Lightning Round!
      All: Ohhhh.
Ross: Thirty seconds, all the questions you can answer.
Monica: You guys are dead! I am so good at lightning rounds!
Chandler: I majored in lightning rounds... alright? We're gonna destroy you.
      Monica: Huh, wanna bet?
Chandler: Well, I'm so confused as to what we've been doing so far...

    • Ross: What was Monica's nickname when she was a field hockey goalie?
      Joey: "Big Fat Goalie"...
      Ross: Correct.

    • Ross: In what part of her body did Monica get a pencil stuck at age fourteen?
Chandler: Oh! (hesitates briefly and then whispers something to Ross)
      Ross: Eew, no! ...Her ear!

    • Ross: Chandler was how old when he first touched a girl's breasts?
      Rachel: Fourteen!
      Ross: No, nineteen.
      Chandler: Thanks, man.

    • Ross: What is Chandler Bing's job?
Rachel: Oh, gosh. It has something to do with numbers...
      Monica: ...and processing...
      Rachel: He carries a briefcase...
Ross: Ten seconds... You need this or you lose the game.
Monica: It's uhm, it has something to do with transponding.
Rachel: Oh! Oh! Oh! He's a transponce... transpondster!
Monica: That's not even a word! I can get this. I can get this!
(Ross stops the clock with a beep)
      Monica: Nooo!
Chandler and Joey: (jumping up and shouting) Yeah! Yes-s-s!

    • Joey: I call Monica's room!
Chandler: You can't just call Monica's room...
Joey: Sure I can. Standard shotgun rules. I'm in sight of the room and I call it.
Chandler: (looks towards the room and mutters under his breath) Damn.

    • Phoebe: Well, the doctor says it takes a couple of days, but I mean... my body's always been a little faster than Western medicine, so...

    • Frank Jr: (shouting triumphantly, fists in the air) My sister's gonna have my baby!!
