Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Continuity: The drums and the spider that Phoebe gives to Joey in this episode are never seen or mentioned again.

    • Goof: When Ben sits down on the couch to hear about the Festival of Lights he seems to sit down in the wrong place, and Monica helps him move over.

    • Goof: When Ross entered the costume shop, the salesman mistakenly thought Ross was there to return the pants he was wearing. Since Ross was empty handed, did the salesman think he was going to remove his pants to return them, and then leave the shop in his underwear?
Note: Clearly, the salesman was joking, suggesting that Ross had such terrible taste in clothing that his pants could be thought of as a "costume".

    • Magna Doodle: A drawing of hunters hiding in a field of cattails, shooting at a flock of ducks

    • Goof: When Ross is telling Ben about Hanukkah in his apartment, Ben's hair keeps changing from laying flat to spiked up between shots.

    • Continuity: In this episode, Chandler fails to tip the Maitre D' while shaking his hand, but in "The One Where Old Yeller Dies", both Chandler and Joey learn how to slip someone a tip while shaking their hand from Richard.

  • QUOTES (18)

    • Ross: I wanna take this year to teach Ben all about Hanukkah.
Phoebe: And maybe I could teach him about the Christmas skull and how people die.
Rachel: You may need to use this year to teach Ben about Phoebe.

    • Joey: (coming out of the bathroom reading a newspaper) Hey... (leaves the apartment)
: Did you know he was in there?
      Monica: No.
Chandler: How long have we been home?
Monica: About a half an hour.
      Chandler: (grimacing) Lovely!

    • Chandler: Hey, y'know what I was thinkin'? When we get married, are you gonna, uh... change your last name to Bing?
      Monica: Nope.
      Chandler: Why not?
      Monica: Bing's weird.

    • Chandler: (to the Maitre D') Hi, could we get two burritos to go, please?
Monica: I'm sorry. But not that sorry, 'cause you don't have to live with it.

    • Ross: Santa's coming.
Ben: Will he bring me an ant farm?
Ross: Will you keep it at Mommy's?
      Ben: Okay.
      Ross: Then sure!

    • Phoebe: (Rachel is enjoying the drums Phoebe bought Joey to force her into moving out) So you like the drums... That's, that's great! Y'know, I was worried that, y'know, they would create, maybe, an unbearable living situation. But... okay, well, apparently not, so... yay!

    • Chandler: Hey, Pheebs. If you want to get Joey a Christmas present that disrupts the entire building, why not get him something a little bit more subtle like a wrecking ball or a vial of small pox to release in the hallway?
Monica: It's not just the drum noise. Every five minutes Joey throws his sticks in the air and I have to hear: "Oh, my eye! Oh, God, my eye!"

    • Salesman: Hello, Sir. You're here to return those pants?
Ross: No, these are my pants.
      Salesman: Oh... okay!

    • Ross: (wearing an armadillo costume) I'm the Holiday Armadillo! I'm a friend of Santa's and he sent me here to wish you a merry Christmas
Monica: What happened to Santa, Holiday Armadillo?
Ross: Santa was unavailable so close to Christmas!
Monica: Oh, well, come in, have a seat. You must be exhausted coming all the way from... Texas.
      Ben: Texas?
Ross: That's right, Ben. I'm Santa's representative for all the southern states and Mexico! But he sent me here to bring some presents for you! Merry Christmas! Oh... and, Happy Hanukkah!

    • Ben: Are you for Hanukkah, too? Because I'm part Jewish.
Ross: (dressed as an armadillo) You are? Me too!
Monica: Because armadillos also wandered in the desert?

    • (As Ross begins to tell the story of Hanukkah, Chandler arrives in a Santa suit, interrupting)
Ross: What are you doing here, Santa?
Chandler: Well, I'm here to see my old buddy, Ben. What are you doing here,... weird... turtle man?

    • Monica: Ben, why don't you go open some presents, while Santa, the Armadillo and I have a little talk in the kitchen. (mostly to herself) Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd say.

    • Chandler: If Santa and the Holiday Armadillo are ever in the same room for too long, the Universe will implode!

    • (Phoebe's apartment has been re-done, but it only has one bedroom)
Rachel: So what should we do? Should we start looking for a new place?
Phoebe: You know, I'm, um, I'm sensing that, um, my grandmother would not be comfortable with that.
Rachel: (suspicious) Oh yeah? Starting to feel her again there, are we?
      Phoebe: A little bit, yeah.
Rachel: Pheebs, is your grandmother maybe saying that you should live here alone?
Phoebe: You heard her, too? You have the gift!

    • Chandler: (referring to the story Ross was telling) My favorite part was when Superman flew all the Jews out of Egypt.

    • Ben: Why is Santa kissing Aunt Monica?
Monica: Because Aunt Monica was very, very good this year.

    • (Rachel and Phoebe enter Monica's darkened apartment. Monica is lighting a menorah as Ben, Superman, Santa Claus and the Holiday Armadillo look on)
Rachel: Wow. Looks like the Easter Bunny's funeral in here.

    • Joey: (about the tarantula) Did you get it?
      Rachel: I got it.
      Joey: Back in the cage?
Rachel: It's back in the cage.
      Joey: Is the cage closed?
Rachel: Joey, will you just come out here and stop being such a baby!
(Joey comes out of his bedroom dressed as Superman)

  • NOTES (4)

    • Chandler: (dressed as Santa) But I didn't get to shake my belly like a bowlful of jelly.
This is a reference to the well-known poem "The Night Before Christmas." The poem was written anonymously in 1823 and is largely responsible for the modern day concept of the American Santa Claus. The specific line is "... and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly."

    • Phoebe: I understand why Superman is here, but why is there a porcupine at the Easter Bunny's Funeral?
Superman, Joey's costume, is a fictional comic book superhero published by DC Comics.
The Easter Bunny, who is the subject of numerous stories, is a mythic bunny who brings candy and presents to children at Easter, a Christian holiday.

    • Rachel & Joey: Tequila!
Rachel and Joey were attempting to perform "Tequila," a 1958 song by The Champs.

    • Chandler: I just got us reservations at Michelle's and tickets to The Music Man to celebrate our first holiday season as a betrothed couple.
The Music Man is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical by Meredith Wilson.
