Season 5 Episode 10

The One with the Inappropriate Sister

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Dec 17, 1998 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Continuity: Up until now, the handles on Chandler and Joey's fridge were on the right side near the wall. In this episode, they're suddenly on the left. This change was likely due to the fact that in the opening scene Ross is sorting out the fridge contents, and with the door opening from the right, the audience and cameras wouldn't have had a clear view of the interior of the fridge.

    • Trivia: Phoebe's bucket signs:
      - We are not a Urinal! Happy Holidays
      - I have no Macy's info.
      - We are not a bank!
      - Please don't invade my personal space!
      - Respect the bell. No loud music! Happy Holidays

    • Continuity: Rachel says in this episode that one of her sisters has a very masculine energy. But both of her sisters, Jill from "The One with the Rachel's Sister" and Amy from "The One with the Rachel's Other Sister", are very feminine.

    • Goof: When Phoebe is being replaced at her bucket spot, she tears down a sign. When the camera angle changes, she has two signs in her hand.

    • Goof: In the apartment when Phoebe is complaining to Monica about her charity bucket, Monica grabs the bucket by the edge. After the camera angle changes twice, she is holding the bucket by the handle.

    • Magna Doodle: SHOP
Magna Doodle: A drawing of a palm tree on an island

    • Continuity: When Danny is in his apartment and Rachel knocks on the door, you can see the door opens directly to the living room. In previous episodes, there was a wall behind Danny when seen from the hall.

    • Goof: After Chandler hurries from the apartment, he ducks back in to give Monica a quick good-bye kiss. The way Courteney Cox laughs, it's almost as if the kiss wasn't scripted.

    • Trivia: When the guy is walking away with the money he stole from Phoebe's charity bucket, in the background, a woman passes carrying a shopping bag with what looks like a picture of Jennifer Aniston on it.

    • Trivia: When Phoebe is saying "Merry Christmas" in a different language, she first says "Feliz Navidad", which is Spanish. She then attempts to say it in German (which is, incidentally, "Fröhliche Wiehnachten", pronounced, "Froy-lik-ah Vine-ock-t'n).

    • Goof: When Joey and Phoebe are talking to each other on the couch, Rachel tucks her hair behind her ears and in the next shot it's out from behind her ear without any movement.

    • Goof: When Ross sorted out the fridge, some of the food in the expired products section wasn't meant to be in the fridge.

    • Goof: When Phoebe is accepting donations outside the store and the guy tries to make change, he says, "Bite me blondie," but Phoebe is wearing a Santa hat and none of her hair is showing.

    • Goof: Joey punches the wall that hasn't been spackled and he makes a huge hole, but in the next scene the hole is gone and the wall is perfectly fine.

  • Quotes

    • Joey: What are you doing?
Ross: I reorganized the fridge. See? (points to empty bottom shelf) Bottom shelf, meats and dairy. (points to middle shelf that only has a single apple on it) Middle shelf, fruits and vegetables. (points to top shelf which is full of food) And top shelf, expired products!

    • Phoebe: (ringing a bell) Hey, you guys. Guess what?
      Chandler: The British are coming?
Phoebe: Oh, you and your ways. (rings the bell at him) Since it's Christmas time, I'm gonna be one of those people collecting donations. Yeah, I already have my bell and later on I get my bucket. I'm going to be out there spreading joy to the people. I mean last year I spread a little joy, but not really enough. So this year I'm going to do the whole city.
Monica: Y'know, I knew a girl in high school who did that... she was very popular.
Phoebe: Yeah, that's weird... you're starting to sound a lot like Chandler lately.
Monica & Chandler: That is so not true.

    • Joey: How could I not get the part?! The play was about a twenty-nine year-old Italian actor from Queens!!
Estelle: Well Talia Shine suddenly became available.
      Joey: She's a woman!
Estelle: What can I say? She nailed it.

    • Rachel: (to Monica and Ross) I don't have any brothers, so I don't know, but did you guys wrestle?
      Ross: Oh, yeah.
Monica: All the time. In fact, I was undefeated.
Ross: Well, you weighed two hundred pounds.
Monica: Still, I was quick as a cat.

    • Ross: (rips up their hockey tickets) There! no one's going to the game! ...Ha-ha-ha!
Chandler: I paid for those tickets!
Ross: No, you didn't... You said you would, but you never did.
Chandler: Oh, yeah... (points at Ross and laughs derisively)

    • Joey: Don't you remember? We were jogging in the park, we saw that really pretty bird, and I wanted to take a picture, but I didn't have my camera.
Chandler: Okay, first of all, chasing the churro guy is not jogging.

    • Chandler: (to Ross who's been keeping Joey from playing "Fireball") Oh, hey. There are some kids playing in the street... Wanna go down there? Give 'em a project? Ruin their day?
Ross: If they have a ball, maybe you can stick razor blades in it and teach them a new game... "gonna-need-stitches ball..."

  • Notes

  • Allusions

    • Estelle: Well, Talia Shire suddenly became available.
Talia Shire is an American actress best known for her role as Adrian in the Rocky movies and Don Vito Corleone's daughter in The Godfather.

    • Ross: What about those Good Will Hunting guys?
Ross is referring to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who both wrote and starred in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. They won the Oscar for their screenplay. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the story is about a troubled prodigy who works as a mere janitor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology despite the fact that his knowledge of and facility with higher mathematics far outstrips that of anyone at the University.
