  • Rachel is a pushover.

    8.0
I think the only interesting plot in this episode, was the running gag about Rachel being a pushover. Also all the running gags about Monica being high maintenance. Which is so true, but I like how they took a conversation and turned it in to a whole plot. Chandler & Ross's plot was kind of tiring, that plot wasn't really developing and everything turned out the same in the end anyway. I'm on Chandler's side though. Joey's plot was the beginning of a new arc. Which is Joey working at Central Perk, which in comparison to Rachel, their both bad waiters! Poor Gunther. An eh episode.moreless
  • "He stole my joke. You know what? I'm going to get a joke journal. Y'know? And document the date and time of every single one of my jokes." - Chandler

    8.8
This episode was okay. It wasn't the best but it had some good jokes. Ross is very happy because Playboy printed a joke he sent in (are there jokes in Playboy?) Chandler however get's very mad because he thinks he made up the joke. They fight about this the entire episode untill they ask Monica to decide whose joke it is. She makes it clear that the joke, well sucks.

The girls are looking at a Playboy which brings up the question if you had to pick one of us to date who would you pick? Monica is not happy that Phoebe chooses Rachel and demands a list and go through it point by point. I love it when Monica get's all competitive.

Joey gets a job at Central Perk, I wonder if he's a better waiter then Rachel.

My favorite part in this episode was when Monica and Chandler are in bed together and they listen to each other without listening to each other. The ending was also funny when they ask the guys who they would date and Chandler says Joey.moreless

    9.1
Great episode. The joke did suck! I agree with Monica that is was bad but Chandler's other jokes were funny when he said them in the coffee shop. Monica and Ross seem left out because Phoebe chooses Rachel, and Chandler chooses Joey but I thought it would be the other way around and Chanlder would choose Ross and Phoebe choose Monica because they knew each other longer. Monica and Chandler don't seem as close as before. Joey has to work at central perk. Its not that bad that Joey works there. Joey is so funny. He stays the night at Monica and Chandler's watching t.v.moreless

  • Good, but not great

    8.6
In "The One With the Joke", Ross and Chandler fight over a joke that Ross had published in Playboy, both of them claiming that it's "their" joke. Janine has moved out of Joey's apartment, and because he can't pay the bills, he gets a job at Central Perk. Monica, Phoebe, and Rachel ask each other who they would date out of the three of them. Monica and Rachel are undecided, but Phoebe says she would date Rachel. This, of course, causes a huge conflict between the three girls. Phoebe finally admits that she thinks that Rachel is a "push-over" and Monica is "high maintenance". Rachel and Monica argue back, saying that Phoebe is "flaky", to which she agrees. I believe that this episode could have been done better, but it was still a good one.moreless

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Chandler: (To Joey) I think it's great that you work here. You're gonna make a lot of money and here's your first tip: Don't eat yellow snow.

    • Rachel: We are very sorry to tell you this, but you, Phoebe, are flaky.
      Monica: Ha!
Phoebe: That's true. I am flaky.
Rachel: So, what? You're just okay with being flaky?
      Phoebe: Yeah, totally.
Monica: Well, then I'm okay with being high-maintenance.
Rachel: Yeah, and I am okay with being a pushover.
Phoebe: That's great. Good for you guys!
      Monica: I am not high-maintenance!
Rachel: I am not a pushover!
      Phoebe: Who said you were?
      Rachel & Monica: You did!
Phoebe: I'm flaky. I'll say anything.

    • Monica: Did you hear something?
Chandler: Maybe it's the sound of Ross climbing into my brain and stealing my thoughts.

    • Rachel: I'm not a pushover!
      Phoebe: Rachel, that's my seat.
      Rachel: Oh, I'm sorry.

    • Monica: That joke is bad, all right. You two should be ashamed for giving to the world a joke that bad. Okay? The joke sucks!
      (Pause)
      Ross: Your joke-
      Chandler: Is not!

    • Ross: My joke-
      Chandler: Mine!
      Chandler: My joke-
      Ross: Mine!
      Ross: My joke-
      Chandler: Mine!

    • Chandler: Hey buddy boy, how'd the audition go?
Joey: Not good. I didn't get the part. And I lost my job here.
Phoebe: That IS a bad audition.

    • Joey: I was an actor, and now I'm a waiter. It's supposed to go in the other direction.
Chandler: So is your apron, you're wearing it like a cape.

    • Rachel: Finally, I have someone I can pass on my wisdom to. Let me tell you about a couple of things I learned while working at the coffee house. First of all, the customer is always right. A smile goes a long way. And if anyone is ever rude to you: Sneeze Muffin.
Joey: Thanks, Rach. Look, you guys are just terrific. You know? Now, how about clearing out of here so I can get some new customers. It's all about turnover.
Ross: Joey, seriously, can I get my coffee?
Joey: Oh, I'm sorry, Ross. I'll get it for you right now. And since I made you wait, I'll toss in a free muffin.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    • Ross: Your joke? Well, I think the Hef would disagree, which is why he sent me a check for one hundred dollars.

Hugh Hefner, also referred to as Hef, is the founder and editor-in-chief of Playboy Enterprises. This icon for bachelors now has his own reality show called The Girls Next Door.

    • Ross: You know, "Barracuda" was the first song I learned to play on the keyboard.

"Barracuda" is a song written and recorded by the rock band Heart. It was released in 1977 as the first single from the band's second album Little Queen.

    • Chandler: Dude, you have got to turn on Behind the Music. The band Heart is having a really tough time, and I think they may break up.

Behind the Music, a VH1 "Rockumentary," chronicles the personal lives of many popular music groups.
Heart is an American rock band that rose to fame in the 1970s. For your information, Chandler was wrong, they are still together.

    • Phoebe: I didn't know Playboy printed jokes. Ross: Oh yeah. Jokes, interviews, hard-hitting journalism. It's not just about the pictures. Monica: That didn't work on Mom, and it's not going to work on us. Playboy is a popular American men's magazine founded in 1953. As well as jokes and the obvious photographs of nude women, it features various articles on fashion, sports, consumer goods, and public figures. "I only read it for the articles" is a common justification for reading Playboy.
