Season 9 Episode 15

The One with the Mugging

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM Feb 13, 2003 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Goof: In the first scene following the opening credits, Rachel rushes in to tell Joey that he got an audition for Leonard Hayes' Broadway play. When Joey says to Monica, "Don't make me more nervous than I already am!", you can see that Jennifer Aniston has been replaced with a stand-in. This is only really visible on the wide-screen version of the episode. On the full-screen version, you can only see part of the stand-in's arm, but enough to know it isn't Jennifer Aniston because her blouse is a completely different color and pattern.

    • Trivia: During Joey's first audition scene, he attempts to speak with a southern accent, but it comes out Jamaican. This is a callback to the Season 8 episode, "The One Where Rachel is Late", wherein Chandler mentions paying for a dialect coach to aid Joey with a southern accent, which after twenty hours of lessons, came out Jamaican.

    • Trivia: Phoebe revealed that she's older than Ross, and because of that, she's also older than Chandler, Joey, Monica, and Rachel.

    • Goof: Joey has his first audition in the morning and they agree to give him a second chance that afternoon. The next scene, where Phoebe and Ross are mugged, is at night. Then in the following scene, Joey enters Monica's apartment and announces that he is auditioning again that afternoon.

    • Goof: When Joey raids Monica and Chandler's fridge for beverages, he takes out three cans and two bottles. In the very next shot, he's holding six cans, but no bottles.

  • Quotes

    • Phoebe: (after asking how much Chandler's new job pays) C'mon people. C'mon now. If i don't know who makes the most, how do i know who i like the most? (flirting) Hi Joey.

    • Rachel: Joey! You're never gonna believe it... she called!
      Joey: She did?
      Rachel: You got it!
      Joey: I did?
Monica: What is she talking about?
Joey: I don't know, but it sounds great!

    • Chandler: (to the other interns) Look, I know I'm a little bit older than you guys, but it's not like I'm Bob Hope! (seeing them all stare blankly at him) ...The comedian?! ...USO!
Jordan: (momentarily confused) Uhhh... It's US-A, sir.

    • Joey: (to Leonard Hayes who's been putting down Joey behind his back) Uh, hi, uh... thank-you so much for whispering for my benefit...

    • Leonard Hayes: (helping Joey improve his performance) You're in your head. You're, you're thinkin' way too much.
      Joey: I really doubt that.
Leonard Hayes: No, no, no. It's that you're not connected with anything in your body. There's no urgency. The scene is a struggle... it's a race. Also, what you did was horizontal. Don't be afraid to explore the vertical. And don't learn the words... let the words learn you.
Joey: (after considering his advice) Couldn't I just sleep with the producer?

    • Mugger: Alright lady, now give me your purse!
      Phoebe: No!
Ross: Whaddaya mean "no?" I knew you'd be my death, Phoebe Buffay!

    • Monica: Phoebe... how do you know a mugger?!
Phoebe: I'm sorry I have friends outside the six of us.

    • Phoebe: My mom was killed by a drug dealer.
Monica: I thought your mom killed herself...
Pheobe: She was a drug dealer!

    • Ross: (about their mugger) Well, good thing Phoebe knew him, 'cause I was about to do some serious damage.
      Phoebe: (laughing) Okay!

    • Monica: (to Chandler) Hey. What are you doing?
Chandler: Putting on the sneakers to get in a younger mindset... see if it sparked anything.
      Rachel: Oh, anything yet?
Chandler: Yes. How's this? "They're so uncomfortable, it's like getting kicked in the nuts for your feet."

    • Joey: The eggnog in our fridge was great.
      Rachel: Joey, that was formula.
Joey: We gotta get more of that.

    • Phoebe: Hey, how was class?
Ross: No one ever asks me that... what's wrong?
Phoebe: Nothing. I really wanna know.
Ross: Oh. Well, uh, there was actually a rather lively discussion about the Pleistocene--
Phoebe: Alright, nothing is worth this. Um, I have a confession to make... um, okay... you know that girl that mugged you when you were a kid...?
Ross: What are you talking about? It wasn't a girl. It was this huge dude! He had a pitchfork, and a... and a sword...
Phoebe: You don't have to lie anymore, Ross, I know that it was a fourteen year-old girl.
      Ross: No, it wasn't.
      Phoebe: Yes, it was.
Ross: No, it wasn't. You don't think I would've defended myself against a fourteen year-old--
Phoebe: (grabs him by the ear and says threateningly) "Gimme your money, punk!"
Ross: (shocked) Oh, my God! was you!

    • Ross: Phoebe didn't by any chance mention that--
Monica: That she was the huge guy that mugged you? Yeah.
Ross: I see. You didn't happen to tell--
      Monica: Everybody we know? Yeah.
      Ross: Great. Thanks!
