Season 6 Episode 23

The One with the Ring

Aired Thursday 8:00 PM May 11, 2000 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Goof: This may not be a goof given Joey's tendency to screw things up, but when he and Ross are in the coffeehouse talking about how they're going to be each other's new best friend, he points to Ross when he says "Joey" and to himself when he says "Ross".

    • Magna Doodle: Rachel call D'ward St. George

This is a reference to Edward St. George, a hair stylist on the set of Friends at that time.

    • Trivia: Joey speaks a rather familiar line in this episode when Paul hugs him. He says, "Paul, is it?" Chandler says that exact same thing when they meet Monica's date Paul (the Wine Guy) in the pilot episode, "The One Where Monica gets a Roommate."

    • Trivia: Monica appears in only one small scene in this episode, where she barely even speaks three lines.

    • Continuity: When Ross comments on how beautiful the ring is that Chandler picked out, Phoebe says, "Hey, you should know... you've bought like, a billion of 'em". In truth, Ross has only bought one, namely, Carol's. Emily was given his grandmother's ring and Rachel didn't get one (as she points out later in the conversation).

  • Quotes

    • Chandler: (looking in a catalogue) Pheebs, can you help me pick out an engagement ring for Monica? I can't figure this out, it's so hard! Should I get her a Tiffany-cut, or a princess-cut, or... (pulls his hand quickly away) Ow! Paper cut!

    • Phoebe: Do you have anything in here for ten dollars?
Jeweler: (taking them from his pocket) Uh, yes. I have these two, rather beautiful, five dollar bills.
Phoebe: I'll give you one dollar for them.

    • Paul: Chandler, did your father ever hug you?
Chandler: No, did he hug you?!

    • Paul: I miss my dad...
Chandler: Well, you can always see my dad in Vegas... kissing other dads.

    • Joey: (to Ross) From now on it's going to be Joey and Ross, best friends! We're gonna be the new Joey and Chandler!

  • Allusions

    • Phoebe: Yeah, it's a restaurant... (thinking) it's... The Rainbow something.
      Chandler: Rainbow Room?
      Phoebe: Nope.
      Chandler: Rainbow Grill?
      Phoebe: Nope.
      Chandler: Somewhere Over the... ?
This alludes to the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie classic The Wizard of Oz.
