NBC (ended 2004)

  • Season 1 Episode 1: The One Where Monica Gets...

  • Goof: In the very first shot, the Central Perk logo is on the window. However when they show inside, the logo has disappeared. Clearly, the establishing shot of Central Perk was added after the pilot was shot.

  • Continuity: In the first couple of episodes, Chandler and Joey's apartment number was #4 and Monica and Rachel's apartment number was #5. However, in the later episodes, they are #19 and #20, respectively. This is because the producers noted that #4 and #5 corresponded to apartments on lower floors and the Friends' apartments were higher up in the building.

  • Continuity: Barry's last name in this episode is Finkle, but in the rest of the series his last name is Farber.

  • Season 1 Episode 2: The One with the Sonogram...

  • Trivia: Rachel's parents spent forty thousand dollars on her wedding.

  • Trivia: This episode is the first to show one of Chandler's patented speech patterns. Monica is fluffing a couch pillow because she doesn't want to give her parents "any more ammunition than they already have". Chandler remarks, "Yes, and we all know how cruel a parent can be about the flatness... of a child's pillow".

  • Trivia: When Rachel is in Barry's office and says, "You went on our honeymoon alone?", Barry responds, "No...". His back then turns to the camera as he walks to the chair. The boy in the chair says something, but his words are removed from the soundtrack and instead we hear (don't see) Barry saying, "I went with, uh...". Obviously, whatever the boy said wasn't as important as keeping Barry's speech continuous. It's also possible that the boy is responding to something Barry asked him, but since we can't see Barry's mouth it's hard to tell.

  • Trivia: This episode is the first to mention that Phoebe is a twin. It is later revealed that she has an identical twin sister named Ursula. Most viewers are already familiar with Ursula from the series "Mad About You" where, like Phoebe, she is played by Lisa Kudrow.

  • Trivia: This is the first episode to establish Monica's childhood obesity.

  • Trivia: This is the first episode to show Jack and Judy Geller favoring Ross over Monica, which becomes a running gag throughout the series.

  • Trivia: This is the first episode to reveal that Monica is a clean freak, which becomes a running gag throughout the series.

  • Trivia: The name of Carol's doctor is Dr. Oberman. In "The One Hundredth" one of Phoebe's doctors is also named Dr. Oberman.

  • Trivia: Ugly Naked Guy is mentioned for the first time in this episode. This guy lives in an apartment in an adjacent building, which can be seen directly from Monica's apartment. He is mentioned a number of times throughout the show's first five seasons.

  • Trivia: In Monica and Rachel's living room, there is a different lamp on the coffee table compared with the one from the first episode.

  • Goof: When Rachel begins to look for her ring under the couch, Monica mentions eating ice cream while holding a spray bottle and towel. The bottle disappears then reappears in her hand before the conversation is concluded.

  • Trivia: In the opening credits of the cast in the fountain, they all open umbrellas. If you look closely the colors allude to early relationships. Ross and Rachel are both holding red umbrellas and are the first love interests. Joey and Chandler are both holding blue umbrellas and are roommates. Monica and Pheobe are both holding yellow umbrellas and were roommates before anyone else.

  • Trivia: An entire month has passed since the pilot episode.

  • Season 1 Episode 3: The One with the Thumb

  • Goof: When Monica introduces Alan to the others, before he is saying his first line, he turns his head to Monica. When the camera angle changes, he turns his head again.

  • Trivia: The first time we see Chandler and Joey's apartment.

  • Trivia: When Chandler is smoking in his office, there is a "No Smoking" sign behind him.

  • Continuity: Gunther doesn't stop Chandler from smoking in Central Perk, but he does later in "The One with the Hypnosis Tape." (Maybe Central Perk's rules changed.)
