  • Well, there can be no doubt that Fullmetal Alchemist is back.

The original Fullmetal Alchemist series is one of my favorite anime of all time. It was one of the first anime I ever watched and well, it had me addicted from the start. When I heard that they were doing a second series, more based on the manga, my emotions were torn. As much as I loved the original series, I didn't feel that it was neccessary. Heck for that matter I didn't watch the movie until about two years after the end of the anime because I thought the ending to the anime was perfect. It's hard to judge an anime from the first episode but if this episode is any sign, then this series has the potential to even top the original series.

I'm glad that they didn't really waste any time reintroducing the cast as everybody but Winry appears in the first episode. It also appears to take things differently from the manga too, so it will be introducing to see what else has changed in this universe to. Apart from the reintroductions, we get a brand new character, an ice alchemist who plans to kill Furher Bradley. He's a very 'cool' villian and there were some cool alchemy effects in this episode. Better yet was that everyone had a part in taking him down, which very rarely happened if at all in the regular series. The characters, well, they are basically the same as they ever have been. I watched the English version of Fullmetal Alchemist so it took a while to adjust to all the voices. I'm not really a big fan of subs, but it's not terrible. I'm kind of really hoping Funimation starts dubbing the series soon but until then, I'll live with it.

The animation is much improved from the original series, but that's to be expected of course. I actually think the new animation works a little bit, particuaraly when the comedy kicks in, which it does quite a bit. (Alex Louis Armstrong!) Anyway, it's a good start to the series. It did a good job of reintroducing the series without feeling too familiar. If it can avoid being too familiar then this series will truely be great.moreless

    • Hughes: What, you're the Fullmetal Alchemist?! Sorry, I had no idea you'd be so...
Ed: (thinking) Go on, say 'little'. I dare you.

    • McDougal: (pointing at Al) So... it's not you?
Al: Oh. Um, no. I'm his younger brother, Alphonse.
      McDougal: But he's a runt...
Ed: Oh yeah?! Can a runt do this?! (uses alchemy to trap McDougal)
McDougal: (muffled) I'd heard the stories, but still, I never imagined this... The Fullmetal Alchemist is just a little kid!
      Ed: Don't call me little!
Al: You know, Brother, I don't think he was really talking about your height just now.
Ed: Well even if he wasn't he still pissed me off!
