  • Zookeeper--Novel Concept For A Villain!

I liked this episode for the fact that Matt Groening and Co. managed to create a very funny yet invincible villain known as The Zookeeper. Why didn't the writers of the old "Batman" TV show come up with the idea of having an animal trainer try to foil the Caped Crusaders with an oddball assortment of wildlife creatures at his command? The only thing I hated about "Less Than Hero" was the weak ending--I felt that Captain Yesterday and his troops should have somehow reversed the situation and trained the animals to attack the Zookeeper! If only Fry and Leela could have somehow gotten hold of an extra tube of that miracle cream...moreless
  • du na na na na na na na du na na na na na na na Batman!

What do you get when you combine the classic Adam West Batman TV series with Futurama? Hilarity of course! Each scene was pretty well thought out and executed, such as the scene when Fry and Leela first discovered their superpowers, and then it followed it up nicely with Bender who was an associate with the robber that tried mugging Fry and Leela. The montage of crimes that they've been tackling after that was very well done. The battle against The Zookeeper, this is where it became Batman like. The corny antagonist, I mean seriously a zookeeper? And than the headlines to exaggerate actions. It did an even better job of making things dramatic later on though with the involvement of Leela's parents. Seeing them go back into the sewers like that was pretty depressing. The ending got kind of lazy, but it added nice closure to this great episode.moreless
  • hillaroius episode

Fry's and Leela's back hurts so they turn to Zoidberg. Zoidberg gives them a special cream. They become super hero's because that's one of the side affects for the cream. They decide to fight crime, but keep there identity secret. Leela's parents get a special pass to come up to the suface for a day. They are sopposed to come up an hour after a bank robbery. The bank got robbed an hour late. Leela missed her mom and dad coming up. Leela goes to the sewer to visit her parents. She tells them that she is a super hero. Her parents tell everyone. A bad guy kidnappes her parents and says if she doesn't get a diamond, then he'll kill her parents. They run out of cream so they don't have super power's anymore. They pretend they and rob a bank. They trade it for Leela's parents. Everything is back to normal again.moreless
  • An amazingly funny episode that had some action too.

Professor Farnsworth orders a supercollider from ðKEA; and after assembling it, Fry and Leela are left with sore muscles. Dr. Zoidberg prescribes them a "miracle cream". While returning the broken supercollider to the store, Fry and Leela are mugged. They discover they are immune to laser fire and physical attacks, a side effect of the "miracle cream"; they also gain the abilities of super strength and super speed. They form a team of superheroes, the New Justice Team taking the names "Captain Yesterday," "Clobberella," and Bender joining them as "Super King."

Leela makes a visit to CitiHall, and procures a special one-day surface pass for her mutant parents. Shortly after, the mayor summons the New Justice Team to deal with a criminal threat. The Museum of Natural History is going to be robbed of the Quantum Gemerald at 9 a.m. by a criminal mastermind called the Zookeeper, who uses trained animals to aid him in his crimes.

Leela, planning her day, schedules her parents' surface visit for 10 a.m. at the same museum. Her plans are ruined when the Zookeeper is an hour late for the theft. The New Justice Team foils the robbery, but the Zookeeper escapes. Leela's parents, convinced that Leela didn't show up because she's ashamed of them slink back to the sewers, just a moment before Leela rushes out onto the street.

Leela makes a trip to her parents' home where she reveals her superhero identity. Leela swears them to secrecy for their own protection, but Morris tells his friends, and the word spreads. Shortly after, Planet Express receives a call from the Zookeeper, who has kidnapped Leela's parents. He is willing to ransom them for the Quantum Gemerald, which he demands they steal for him.

The New Justice Team resolves to steal the gem. Unfortunately, they have run out of miracle cream, and are forced to commit the robbery without super powers. Fortunately, the museum guards still think The Team have superpowers, and the Gemerald is retrieved successfully. The Quantum Gemerald is given to the Zookeeper, who releases Leela's parents and escapes. Bender and a morally confused Fry set off to commit a few more crimes while they still have their superhero costumes, and life returns to normal.moreless
  • Fry, Leela and Bender become superheroes.

Fry and Leela discover a cream that Dr Zoidberg bought from a travelling salesman actually gives them superpowers. Along with Bender they become a crime fighting trio battling to save the city of New New York.

A very fuuny moment is when Fry and Leela question Benders motives in wanting to be a crimefighter believing him to be on the supply side of crime.

During this episode we see a lot of corny, but funny scenes involving the trios exploits. Much similar to the early Batman series. With insane plans being devised by their nemesis and them having to stop it from happening.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (15)

    • This episode takes place after Leela's Homeworld, so it's established that Leela is a mutant. However the general public must still believe that she's an alien, otherwise she would be banished to live in the sewers.

    • Opening theme promotion: SOON TO BE A MAJOR RELIGION

    • Captain Yesterday's medallion is a C overlayed by a Y.

    • Leela's sign on her super hero outfit is a hand holding a rolling pin. Many fans mistook it for the communist symbol. The arm was suppsoed to make a C to stand for Clobberella.

    • LOOK HARD: Teddy Roosevelt: Museum Founder; No Admittance Without $5.00 Suggested Donation.

    • The piranhas that were "persuaded to walk on land" use Dr. Wernstrom's reverse SCUBA suit (minus the wetsuit).

    • The creme said that it gives superpowers to humans, but Leela is a mutant.

RESPONSE: But she is a human mutant (that is, her DNA is mutated from human DNA), so it's quite probable that the creme might have similar effect on her as on normal humans.

    • Powers listed on creme: The powers listed on the tube included superstrength, superspeed, and aquatic telepathy. But it failed to mention invulnerability, despite the robber's foiled mugging of Fry and Leela. Remember? The laser bounced off of Fry, and the pipe over Leela's head just got dented...without either person getting hurt.

    • When Fry and Leela are taking back the remains of the Pi-Kea machine, you notice it there behind them in a perfect balance. But when the scene shows them backing up when the robot was about to shoot, the box is gone!

    • Leela yells at Fry for nearly giving away his identity, but yet she says his name several times in public while they were still in costume.

    • Despite the Mayor's statement, we never saw the New Justice Team damage anything in the museum. All the damage was done by The Zookeeper's animals.

    • It was established that the team cannot fly. But we see Fry jump out of a window and fly back into the room in costume.

    • Leela ripping her clothing is a series of continuity errors. First, she tears a shirt that shows cleavage to one that doesn't. Then she rips that suit off, and she's got her pants back.

    • When the Zoo Keeper captures Leela's parents, Morris (Leela's dad) complains about his allergies and Leela's mom says that there was animal fur all over so we can assume Morris is allergic to animal fur. But at the beginning of the episode, Leela's parents have a mutated cat sitting between them and Morris didn't sneeze once during that scene.

    • In the scene when Morris, (Leela's father), is fishing in the sewer and blabs to his mutant friends that Leela is Clobberella, Raoul, the mutant with the arm growing out of his head, has the third arm protruding from the left side of his head. In previous episodes such as "Leela's Homeworld", the arm was coming out of the right side of his head.

  • QUOTES (37)

    • Fry: Wow, a cream that give you super powers! You'd think something like that you'd have to freebase.

    • Fry: Uh, Leela, how you gonna meet your folks tomorrow? We've already scheduled the Zookeeper for a 9am foiling at the museum.
Leela: Not a problem. I've cleverly arranged to meet my parents right there at the same museum at 10.
Bender: 9...10...a big fat hen. (He takes a puff of his cigar.) The name's Bender!

    • Leela: Oh, I completely forgot, I left my apartment on fire!
Bender: As for me, I'm late for my L.S.A.T.'s
Fry: And I can't take life anymore! (Fry jumps out the window)

    • Bender: Hey Fry we've still got our costumes on. Wanna steal some more stuff?
Fry: I guess, as long as you think it's right.
      Bender: Superheroes away!

    • Leela: Mom, Dad, oh I'm so sorry I got you kidnapped by a crazy madman who tried to feed you to pirhanas.
Munda: We're just happy to be involved in your life.
Leela: No no, it's my fault for telling you I was a superhero.
      Morris: That's true.

    • Fry: Oh no! Our superpower cream is out of itself!
Leela: Check inside the cap! There might be a caked in goldmine!
Fry: El zilcho! I'm afraid we're boned.
Bender: El zilcho...is it too late to change my superhero name?

    • Fry: But, should superheroes commit crime? Even to save lives? I need moral guidance. Bender?
Bender: Hmm, the thought of stealing anything fills Superking with disgust. But if it must be so, then let a museum heist be pulled!

    • Munda: Save us Leela! I mean...if you don't have anything better to do.

    • Zookeeper: Greetings superheroes, remember me?
Farnsworth: I don't remember much buddy, and you're no looker!
Leela: Uh Professor, isn't it time for your nap?
      Farnsworth: Yes dammit!

    • Leela: Oh, I can't take it! Mom, Dad, I'm Clobberella!
      Morris: Galloping gators!
Munda: You're a superhero? Well that's wonderful! But did you have to make the costume so revealing?

    • Munda: It's good that Leela doesn't love us. She'll be less sad when we die.

    • Mayor: Thank you mysterious heroes. The value of the Gemerald you saved is slightly greater than the cost of the damage you caused to this museum. A net gain for our great city!

    • Munda: I'm scared and confused. I think we've wandered into an off-Broadway play.
Morris: No, there are way too many people here.

    • Zookeeper: Ah, superheroes! Or should I say superzeroes!
      Fry: That was uncalled for.

    • Leela: I can't believe the Zookeeper is this late for his own heist. It's just rude!

    • Mayor: A dangerous villain know as The Zookeeper, who commits crimes aided by a pack of highly trained animals.
Fry: Pack of highly. Got it!
Mayor: His crew includes a badger with a troubled past and nothing left to lose, an elephant who never forgets - to kill! And a seldom used crab named Lucky aka Citizen Snips.

    • Leela: Well, so long. Keep in touch.
Mayor: Wait, stay and meet the superheroes. There's three of you and three of them so it'll be perfect.

    • Leela: For one, superheroes cause a lot of collateral damage, and we don't wanna get our butts sued.
Fry: Or do we...? No, I guess not.
Leela: Also, if our identities get out, every crook in the city will be after us. Or, God forbid, our loved ones.
Bender: Superking has no need for loved ones.

    • Woman: Captain Yesterday, I find your skintight highwaters incredibly sexy! Let's get together sometime!
Fry: Sure. I'm listed in the phone book so once I reveal my real name to you along with my home address and a copy of my birth certificate...

    • Fry: Captain Yesterday!
      Leela: Clobberella!
Bender: And Superking! The best one of the three!

    • Leela: (shouting) Listen up New New York! There's a new group of superheros in town! And we're -
Hattie: (shouting) Quiet! It's 4am and I just fell asleep for the first time in 30 years!
Leela: (shouting) Sorry! (whispering) A new era of justice has begun.
      Hattie: (shouting): What?!

    • Fry: Now me and Leela are forming an awesome crime-fighting duo.
Bender: Wow, crime-fighting. Cool. You say you're a duo? Yeah duos are good. Of course sometimes they're a little short handed. See ya. With two humans you'd think there'd be a robot in there... to balance things out. But, whatever. I have these three costumes you could use. But, I guess I'll just throw one away.
Leela: We'd love to have you on the team Bender. But aren't you more on the supply side of crime?

    • Leela: Hmm, I have been looking for a way to serve the community that incorporates my violence. Let's do it!
      Fry: You'll barely regret this!

    • Leela: How did we manage to survive? What gave us those strange powers?
Fry: Maybe we're all wearing magic rings but they're invisible rings so we don't even realise it. Also you can't feel the rings.

    • Fry: I'm too scared to find my pocket. Here, I'll just take of my pants and give you those.

    • Mugger: Excuse me? Hi! Do you have a minute? I live in Jersey City and my car broke down and I need to get back because my Aunt's real sick and she needs this medicine but I need money for the bus. So I'm mugging you. Hand over your wallets.
Leela: I don't believe that story for a second.
Mugger: It doesn't matter, I'm mugging you.
Fry: There's no bus to Jersey City.

    • Farnsworth: Bad news nobody, the supercollider super-exploded. I need you to take it back and exchanged it for a wobbly CD rack and some of those ransid meatballs.

    • Fry: I feel like I was mauled by Jesus.

    • Bender: Ah, there, finished. And with only six missing pieces!
Fry: Those Swedes sure know how to put in almost everything you need.

    • Hermes: Ooo, while you're there, could you pick me up a licence to kill?
Leela: Sure. Bare hands or weapon?
Hermes: Uh, what does piano wire count as?

    • Amy: Are you off your rocket? Your parents are mutants. It's illegal for them to come above ground 'cause they're inferior genetic scum..uh present company excluded of course!

    • SewerCom Announcer: Your call is being connected by SewerCom - Reach out and touch the sewers.

    • Leela: Let's see...which powers do we have? Super Strength?
(Fry karate chops table; Leela kicks down wall)
      Fry: Yup.
      Leela: Uh-huh. Lickety-Speed?
(Leela and Fry run quickly across room)
      Fry: Yup!
Leela: Yes sir! Ability to command the loyalty of sea creatures?
Fry: Hey Zoidberg! Get in here!
      Zoidberg: Screw you!
      Leela: Ain't got that!
      Fry: Nope!

    • Leela's Father: Look at me! Proud Dad of a superhero! We should print up T shirts. And F shirts for our friends with two arms on the same side.

    • Fry: When you were a kid, what was your biggest fantasy?
      Leela: To have parents.
Fry: Whatever. The correct answer is to be a superhero.

    • Leela: Guess who I just got off the phone with!
      Bender: No!

    • Leela: Fry, we need to keep our secret identities a secret.
      Fry: From everybody?
      Leela: Especially from everybody!

    • Though Leela's dad's name (Morris) is revealed in Leela's Homeworld, her mom's name is not revealed until this episode. Her name is Munda.

    • Several scenes were deleted from this episode. You can find them on the Season 4 DVD.

    • When Bender gets hit by the kangaroo, the cartoon bobble says "01001010." Translated using the ASCII code, the Hex is "4A." Bluntly, it's supposed to mean "Ahhh!"

    • One of the Jackson's from the original Jackson 5 (though it has never been revealed which one) was one of the voices singing the Justice Team song for the show.

    • Alien code: Zoidberg gives Fry & Leela a tube of lotion to rub on their skin. After they get superpowers, they read the back to see what was in it. A large text of Alien Code #1 can be seen on the back. When translated it reads: "Keep out of reach of children under the age of five hundred. For best results, sacrifice a small mammal xanroc, then apply evenly to interior of eyeball. Would you like to help sell Flimflam Products? Contact a representative at a covered wagon near you."
