The love story between Zoidberg and the flower girl alludes to Chaplin's 1931 film City Lights where Chaplin falls in love with a blind flower girl. After a series of hilarious events he comes by the money needed for an operation to restore her eyesight. He gives it to her even though he fears she won't be able to love him once she sees that he is just a poor street bum.

The title is a reference to the Jane Austin novel Sense and Sensibility which revolves around the life, loves, and romances of a pair of non-affluent sisters as well as their heartbreaks. Likewise, this episode is mainly about the romance and impending heartbreak of Zoidberg, who is far from prosperous.

    • Tonya Harding

When Tonya attacks Bender by hitting him in the knee to sabotage his ability to compete against her. The attack, as well as her name, are a reference to the figure-skater Tonya Harding.
