  • This episode shows the night that Fry was frozen on December 31, 1999

I thought that this was an excellent episode of "Futurama". It had a very good plot and with a few good humor. This episode was also very interesting because it revealed to us what happened the night that Fry was frozen on December 31, 1999. Fry asked Leela if she wanted to go on a date with him but Leela told Fry that she is already going on a date with some guy named Chaz. Fry feels disheartened and worthless. Leela sees Fry and asks him if he can watch over her pet Nibbler and then Fry kinda agrees. Nibbler talks to Fry and shows him something which leads Fry on a mission to save the world. The brains blurb out to Fry about what they did to him on the night that he was frozen. Fry was looking back at December 31, 1999 which was the night that he was frozen and it turned out that Nibbler pushed Fry into the time freezing machine. Fry gets upset at the Nibblers because that was his life and it was all gone because he was frozen for 1000 years. Bender's part in the beginning of the episode was funny and that whole orphan thing was pretty funny but I thought Chaz was being mean because he didn't let the orphans rocket skate. Everything that happened in this episode was just genius and awesome all the way. Overall, an excellent episode of "Futurama" that definitely had me hooked. 10/10

  • Fry thinks he is wothless, until he discovers his stupidity is the key to saving the entire universe from some returning killer brains.

This is one of the more popular episodes of "Futurama" but time travelling story-lines either work well or they don't work at all. "The Why of Fry" is a fun episode but is hardly as perfect as everyone makes out. There are some decent gags, but not nearly enough, and the plot is interesting until the time travelling stuff at the end, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever when I think about it.

Overall, I preferred "Futurama" back when it was starting out and was more about the jokes in idividual episodes than the amazing science fictiony serial it's wanting to be here. But it still has its moments this.
  • futurama origins

we learn why fry was frozen: he was selected to help earth from brains trying to squeeze knowledge out of people {sounds horribly made up, and for most shows, it might be, but not for futurama}. we learn it was nibbler who was the one who made fry fall in the cryogenics freezer and the reason he got frozen. a good episode with some good backstory to the very first episode. a personal favorite of mine because it is really funny and also has a very good and interesting plot. a true delight for futurama fans, i give thee an A+

    "The Why Of Fry"

    Grade: A*

So this was an excellent episode explaining why Fry came to the future and his purpose. Not only that, he starts to realise that maybe he does have a chance to be with Leela, but also more talking apperances from Nibbler. Nevertheless a very important episode and in my opinion should have came just before the series finale.

The episode begins with Fry setting off on a space delivery, but finding out that the crew went without him. He asks Leela to go to dinner with him, but his hopes are crushed when she tells him he is going on a date with Chaz, the mayor's aide.
When Fry is told to take Nibbler out for a walk, he discovers that Nibbler can talk, and knocks him out, sending him to his home planet Eternium. The Nibblonians tell Fry that the brains are taking information from the universe and storing it into the Infosphere, a ship remiscient of the Death Star. Because Fry is immune to the brain's power, he is the only one who can stop it.
Fry gets to the Infosphere using his Scooty Puff Jr and gets trapped after it breaks. He asks questions in the database and soon gets alerted by the other brains as a result. He plants a bomb and activates it, which will send them to a different universe. With seconds away from detonating, the brains tell Fry that they should ask the database what really happened to him on December 31st 1999.
He asks the question and finds out that Nibbler is responsible for pushing him into the cryogenics tube. Fry is upset that they took away his life and he is sent to the other universe with the brains as time runs out.
Seemingly trapped with the brains, Fry wished that Nibbler never took him to the future. Fortuantly, the brains give him one use of time travel to prevent this from happening. Meanwhile, Leela's date with Chaz ends when he reserves an ice rink only for her and prevents the orphans from skating with them.
Fry arrives on 31st December 1999, and teleports just behind Nibbler. Fry grabs Nibbler seconds away from pushing the original Fry into the tube. Nibbler tells him that he needs to be frozen since he won't live long enough, but Fry feels he was "being used". In the end, Nibbler tells him if there's anything worth saving in the future. Fry tells him Leela, but he doesn't think he's important to her. Nibbler leaves the decision to Fry, and in the end Fry pushes the original Fry into the cryogenics tube.
Fry returns with Scooty Puff Sr after telling Nibbler that Scooty Puff Jr sucks, and is able to set the bomb off and escape with no problems. He returns to Earth and Nibbler blanks his memory to stay undercover. The episode ends with Leela telling Fry that he may not be the most important person in the universe, but she's glad to be there with him.

Overall, a very important episode, with good jokes and finally an explanation of Futurama and Fry's existence. It's one of my favourites, along with the pilot episode as a reason for this, and it ties up the loose ends very well.
  • A hilarious explanation of why Fry came to the future.

    10
This episode is hillarious, and informative and some hilarious parts are when Fry said he did do the nasty in the pasty and when Fry was getting ready for the mission and he yelled at Zoidberg for giving him the same toy surprise as last time. Also it was very funny when Fry was talking to Bender and Bender kept saying nope to everything Fry said and then Fry said Bender is great and then Bender said nope and then he got annoyed. Also some more hilarious parts are when The Giant Brain said he killed the dinosaurs and when one of the brains said to Fry if he sent them into another dimention that they would make a clique that you won't be part of. Overall because of it's hilarity and explanation of why Fry came to the future is why this is such a good episode.
  • why fry came to the future

After being left behind while Bender and Leela went on a delivery for which they ended up receiving medals Fry feels redundant. Nibbler speaks to Fry while he is out taking him for a walk informing him that he is very much needed amd is the most important person who has ever lived. We see the second apperances of the flying brains and they are slowly collecting all the information in the universe.
Nibbler explains that due to Fry's genetic adnormality he is immune to the flying brains attack. He is sent to destroy the brain only to discover while there that it was the Nibbler that had caused him to be frozen for 1000 years and is given the opportunity to change the past and prevent himself from being frozen.

Fry feels really down as Leela is head over heels because of Chaz, the Mayor's Aide. While on her date, Leela asks Fry if he could walk Nibbler, and he reluctantly agrees. When he says how unimportant he feels, Nibbler speaks and takes him to his home planet. There, Fry learn about his genetic abnormality that qualifies him for a mission to save the universe. While on this mission, we learn what really happened on the night Fry was frozen.

A good episode that had a lot of funny moments, and we learned a lot about why Fru was sent to the future. Watch this episode, and you will not be disappointed.
  • Wow.

This was really, really, REALLY good, the explanation of why Fry was REALLY in the future was great and done well. I also like how Leela dates a obnoxious bigshot in this episode and how he doesn't let a bunch of orphans ice skate with them after they drove for ages and was probaply their only chance. The scooty puff jr and sr jokes were great and the last three things the huge brain doesn't know were hilarious, I also like how the nibblonians wanted Fry to eat a zebra, that was great.

This is a really special episode that I will never forget.
  • Nibbler reveals to Fry that he has an important job to do.

  • Lots of references to past episodes, and the reason why everything happens!!!

    7.5
Beautiful. It made me laugh, it didn't make me cry, it was awesome. I loved those jokes,

"You mean they're trying to learn?"
    "Correct."

And we finally found out that Nibbler pushed Fry in the tube. Plus, Fry now has a chance with Leela! Yay! This episode, Fry seemed surprisingly noble, giving himself for the universe. The side story woth Leela and that Chaz guy did not work, but it did intertwine with with the final scene at the end. A very solid episode, Clamps gives it 5 out of 5.
  • back to the future

nibler takes fry to his home planet then when fry finds out that nibler knocked him over fry goes back to 1999 to stop nibler from tipping him over but when fry learns he could have a chance with leela he tips him self over and when he goes back to the future and fry and leela kiss for the first time
  • This is a sweet episode.

This episode is super funny. It's one of my favorite episodes. It is the best written episode out of all the other Futurama episodes. It is just sweet. It's a sequal to "The Day The Earth Stood Stupid".

Bender and Leela went on a deliivery without Fry. They got medals. Fry feels unimportant because he was left out. On top of that, Leela goes out with the mayors aide. He is really sad. He feels worthless. He walks Nibbler because Leela asked him to. Nibbler knocks out Fry and brings him to his home planet in the little spaceship that he brought Leela to his home planet in, in the episode "The Day The Earth Stood Stupid". The Nibblonians ask Fry to set off a bomb in the brain spawn's new base. The bomb would send them to a alternate dimension for eternity. It has to be Fry because he is the only person that lacks a certain brain wave. The brain wave is the only way that brain spawn's can know if something is there or not, and that's the wave that they need to turn people stupid. He doesn't have the brain wave because he went back in time to 1947 and became his own grandfather (it's in the episode "Roswell That Ends Well"). The brain spawn's are alomst done absorbing all the information in the universe. Once they do, they will destroy the universe so no new information will be made. He agrees to. The Nibblonians give Fry a Snooty Puff Jr. to go in and out (Snooty Puff Jr. is a kind of hover bike). Fry has one minute to get in and out because the brain spawn's base is scanning itself and that's the last piece of knowledge it needs, to know everything in the universe. He goes in and he realizes that the brain spawn's base knows everything in the world. He asks a few questions and the alarm goes off. The brain spawn's try to stop him, but he lacks the brain wave, so he doesn't get affected. The brain spawn's base is starting to close. He starts pedaling out, but the Snooty Puff Jr. breaks. Fry is really stupid, so he sets the bomb off anyway. He saves the world, but he is trapped for eternity with brain spawn's. They hate him and they want him gone, so they have an idea. They can send Fry back to the year 2000. They do, but right before they do, they show Fry a video. It's of him in the year 2000, when he got frozen. It turns out that Nibbler is the guy that did the prank phone call the night that he got frozen. Nibbler is also the one who pushed Fry into the freezer. He did it so that Fry could go to the future and save everyone. Anyway, Fry goes back to the year 2000. He goes back to where Nibbler pushed him in the freezer (under the desk). Fry stops Nibbler, but Nibbler convinces Fry to push himself into the freezer because Leela would die if he didn't. He starts fading away and realizes that he would just get blown up again and spend an eternity with brian spawn's again. Right before he fades away completly, he yells "Just remember, Snooty Puff Jr. sucks". He went to the future and did the exact same stuff he did before. When it gets to the part of his life where he blows up the brain spawn's base, he does and makes it out alive. He makes it out because of what he said about Snooty Puff Jr. They made the hover bike better. Then Nibbler brings Fry back to Earth and erases his memory. Leela's date didn't work out with the Mayor's aide and Fry is happy. Everything is back to normal and Fry doesn't remember a thing.

    I give this episode a 10 out of 10.
  • Introduction of Scooty Puff Jr

The whole Futurama series was leading up to thid very moment where Fry's destiny would be explained. This episode is very revealing and funny such as the questions that Fry asks:
    "What really killed the dinosaurs?"
    "ME!"
The whole plot was very creative and if Futurama had not been cancelled, I'm sure that they would do an episode explaining the "other" which is apparently Leela. This is another teaser ending which makes viewers believe that Leela and Fry do start dating but they are still friends in the next episode.
This episode has been hinted right back in the first episode with Nibbler's shadow and is obviously a very thought out plot. Overall, this episode is definitely a 10.
  • In this episode we find out fry\'s destiny and what the brain spawns plans are for the universe. We find out that not only isFry one of the dumbest of the universes inhabitants but that he is also the only one who can save the universe.

I have watched every episode of Futurama and this one is truly the best. It is interesting to learn how and why Fry was frozen. Plus the reason his brain patterns are different to everybody elses is because of the fact that he is his own grandfather ( roswell that ends well ).It is great to see its linkto three other episodes and provides some of the most sought after answers in Futurama. It is also quite funny with Frys usual dumbness and the space scooter he needs to escape the brain sphere on looks like a kids toy. Truly the best episode of Futurama thats been made.
  • This is the best episode of Futurama. I love all of the episodes with heavy sci-fi plots, especially those with Nibbler. This plot is so great, and it really ties together the entire series, in fact it would have made for a great conclusion to the serie

Virtually every line of dialogue in this eisode is hysterical, there are so many clever double-entendres.
  • Not only the defining plot episode of the series, very touching and entertaining as well.

As a 17-year-old geek who writes reviews for his favorite television shows on a website called tv.com, it shouldn't be too hard to imagine the fact that there are times where I feel like I'm entirely unimportant, completely expendable, and the most useless person in the universe.

It's that aspect of me that draws me to Fry. In this episode, Fry has to deal with that very concept only to discover that he is the most important man in the universe as he is the only one capable of destroying the galactic menace of GIANT BRAINS! Of course, before discovering that, he's humiliated by missing out on a mission and having Leela turn him down yet again.

Yeah, that's happened to me too, but not in that amount of detail.

Along with Jurassic Bark, this episode of Futurama gives the entire series a heart that most shameless comedies completely overlook. And the romance is nice as well and not entirely cheesy.

    Long live Futurama reruns!
