Genji Monogatari (frequently translated as "The Tale of Genji") was written in the 11th century and is considered by many to be "the first novel." Attributed to Murasaki Shikibu, this Japanese story recounts the life of the son of a Japanese emperor, who is forced to the status of a commoner. The plot centers around his romances and the social structure of the era. It has been speculated that it was written to entertain Japanese court women of the time.
