- Skylab: There are several references to the Cylon ship crashing being similiar to Skylab. In July 1979, the US satellite Skylab crashed into a desert area of Australia after intense speculation by scientists and others as to where it would crash.

- At the airport: "Hijack," "Smoking or Non-Smoking," "Cuba"
  Troy and Dillon's experience in the airport represent a time long past where smoking was allowed on commercial flights and security was not sophisticated enough to spot them or detect their laser weapons. The hijack attempt represents a phenomenon of the time--Cuban refugees released by Castro and sent to the U.S. hijacking aircraft to return home.
