Sunday 9:00 PM on HBO

Game of Thrones giveth and it taketh away. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said that the series will not necessarily end after the rumored seven seasons.

"That's definitely open," he said. "I think 'seven seasons and out' has never been the conversation. The question is, how many beyond the seventh season we're going to do. Obviously we're shooting six now and hopefully discussing seven. They're feeling like there are probably two more years after six. I would love them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now."

[Spoilers for Season 5 follow, you know which one we're talking about]

Eight seasons would be at least one more season than there are corresponding books planned in the series written by George R.R. Martin. Despite that heartening news, Lombardo didn't have glad tidings for fans of a certain bastard who was betrayed and stabbed last season. "Dead is dead is dead," he said. "Yes, everything I've seen, heard and read...  Jon Snow is indeed dead."

We're sure that will be the end of the conversation. Unless you're a follower of one of those other Thrones religions that believe that "The dead can never die" or that the Red God has the power of resurrection. (Or you've seen those paparazzi pics of Kit Harington in Belfast.)

Game of Thrones returns in spring 2016.

Thank God. I was nowhere near ready to say goodbye to the show by season 7!

Yea me neither. There's so much story here. I mean 10 eps per season isn't even enough.

This would be much better news if the show hadn't already cut, changed, altered, or otherwise mutilated a good number of plots and characters. Especially coming on the heels of season 5 that managed some spectacular failures (Dorne, oh Dorne).

Perhaps this could give them more much needed time to properly focus on and develop certain storylines, but it might be already too late to fix some of the past missteps and omissions. Season 6 should prove whether GoT can still recall what once made it so good (like GRRM's vision in the form of book 6...).

Maybe they can do a prequel about the times of the mad king and create the battle of the Trident.

There's what he said and then there's what he didn't say.

Said: "Jon Snow is indeed dead."
Didn't say: "Kit Harrington isn't going to be on Game of Thrones next season."

How can they plan to have more seasons when by season 7 all those we care about are probably dead.

This is kind of BS. They should have known that they, being the highest rated(whether it currently deserves it or not) and most popular show that HBO has ever had was going to go beyond the initial order. They should have known this by season 3.

So why so much wasted time, dithering and cutting certain characters plots? This show even in its streamlined (which is a oxymoron given the amount of waste ) could and does have enough content and plots to extend the show into a 10th season.

Jon still has to live, has to travel to the east and meet up with Dany.

Same as Arya, she has to have a major fall out with the faceless men, and make her way to Dany

Bran still has to master his skills. Likely teach them to his warg brother and sister and go from there.

Someone has to find Rickon.

There has to be ramifications from the killing of Mycrella.

Someone has to head to Storm's end to pick up tons of Dragon glass.

The various people that have Valyrian swords have to be found and come together.

etc.

But hey, I would like more drama.

Also they need to stop beating up on Sansa and let her become a fully realized character.

Yeah, definitely more drama; the unnecessary boobs/ sex scenes bore me to death. The books do have a lot of violence, but not as much sex. I'm not a prude, but I feel that the show tries too hard to shock sometimes. It's a great story, they don't have to rely on these yhings so much.

They have always been half a book behind, so 8 seasons would be fitting.

Oh no! Why, for crying out loud, why do they have to milk their cash-cows until there is nothing left? Why not have an end date and let the show end on a high note? This is really sad news... :(

Hope they make the new seasons a little more interesting going forward.

why would the HBO programming president know if snow is dead-dead or not? i feel like if the writers said that, or the producers, or directors, THEN i'd believe it, but just because your the president of programing doesn't mean you know the low down on all to come in the shows that play on your channel.

Forget Jon Snow, I want to see the reanimated headless corpse of Sean Bean return!! And if snow makes another appearance it will obviously be as a white walker regardless of the books cannon, failing that flashbacks at best.

Jon Snow is dead.
Long live Jon [Redacted].

Ooooh, so that's why they condensed 2000 pages into 600 minutes of Television: to finally be done with that damn book business and get on with making stuff up themselves!

I KNEW IT :-)
Next season they'll do the Greyjoy and Riverlands arc (and probably some flashbacks), which is still material from books 4 & 5.
Then according to GRRM books 6 and 7 will be at least as long as book 3 (the longest book in the series so far).
They can't do that in 1 1/2 seasons.
So no way that they could tell the story in 7 seasons / 70 episodes.

i said the same thing and people were jumping down my throat. I said it is impossible to condense such a complex story into 7 seasons

This show is very very profitable. Of course they want to keep it around some more.

They know nothing (about) Jon Snow.

Shouldn't the two remaining seasons be enough to explore the remaining questions:
  • Will we ever see the winter actually arriving?
  • Will Deanerys with her dragons defeat white walkers and maybe that cancels the winter? Or the opposite and everyone just dies turning into ice zombies partying midst the ice age?
  • Will Bran become a powerful shaman with magical powers and/or has he just eaten too many mushrooms?
I fear that extra seasons will do no good. How to keep the content interesting so that it does not repeat itself. Audience will not be endlessly impressed by just new ways to kill of characters.

I actually agree. The show has always cut a lot from the books, and felt rushed to me as bookreader because of it. I don't see the point in revisting and trying to integrate cut storylines now. The only reason they would, is if HBO forced them in adding another season (which reading this post seems like a big possibility).

I also disagree.
Actually those two seasons will be too rushed and they'd have to cut far too much plot.

I completely disagree. If you've read the books you know Martin provides more than enough material for more than 20 episodes. Last season the cut out so many things from charaters storyline, like Dany getting married, their being a deadly disease in Meeren, her threathened by an army at her gates, her having a visitor from Dorne. Plus thats just her storyline they are way behind on the Iron Island, the left out tons of material in the Dornish storyline. They down played and seriously cut almost every characters' storyline.

If Martins' next to books are as long as Dance with Dragons they will have enough material to do at least 4 more books plus another season to address the things they've left out so far.

Well guys. I don't know who said it, but someone said: "If you still think this going to have a happy end, then you haven't been paying attention." So yeh keep on dreaming about the various ways of Jon Snow returning. I am pretty sure he and all other forms of his reincarnations imaginable are dead for good. But keep on dreaming.

You're confusing "happy end" with "meaningful plot". Nobody said that Snow would live forever, but killing a major character that has a major focus on it all this time without having said character barely interact with any of the other story lines is abysmal writing and not likely to occur here.

The difference between Ned and Snow is that Ned's death was integral to the plot and set things in motion while affecting everyone else and the way John died means squat.

It is as if we would be told that Khalisi simply died of thirst while walking in the desert. It's just plain dumb.

Also, consider that I haven't read any of the books and just from watching the show it was easy enough to guess even all the way back in season 1 that

***************
I guess spoiler alert is still a good idea

John Snow is a targeryan
****************

And the show hasn't gotten to it despite throwing off so many hints, meaning it's likely to be a factor at some point, ergo he's coming back.

I completely agree with JasonMelvil and Bluefish. Even if I hadn't read the books and other analyses, I would definitely believe Jon won't die. For the simple fact of how stories usually turn out. First, the underdogs never die - Jon being a bastard and all. Second, why would they have the powerful White Walker look at him attentively from afar when he's fighting the minor White Walker or why would they lock eyes after the battle if Jon was simply going to die and never have a chance to fight the White Walker boss? Third, the tide will begin to turn eventually: haven't the good guys lost enough? The bad guys won't triumph forever. We don't have many good guys left, so why would they kill Jon?

I compeletely agree. As a book reader I always assumed Jon lived it was just how, If he did dies it would be like so what was the point of this story then? Martin spendsway too much time on Jon, hinting and mentioning his parentage. Its not a matter of a character you like being killed but a matter of a pivotal character being killed off without Jon Snow there is no one to fight the White Walkers.

Jon Snow and Tyrion are too integral to the plot to truly die. In the books, Jon's death isn't even overtly confirmed; in the show he's shown to die but they set up Melisandre being around as a trap-door.

Doubt if you like, but mark my words: neither of those characters is gonna die. Ever.

This is not really news now, is it? They've always said that it would be 7 or 8 seasons. Probably depends on if they do the last book in 1 season or 2.

Or they'll just make stuff up regardless. It's not uncommon for shows that move faster than their source material to do.

They're option are either to take a break (yeah right...), put up loads of fillers, slow down time dramatically (see Dragonball Z) or just make their own stuff.

I really wish they would stop it with the Jon Snow thing. Come on. If he was really gone they would say "Jon Snow is dead and not coming back." Instead, they just keep saying, "Jon Snow is dead." No one is questioning if he's dead. He's obviously dead. We all think (KNOW) he's going to be brought back. It's getting a little frustrating actually. Just say nothing at all! And why can't the HBO President just say that he's not privvy to all the major storylines and wants to be surprised just like the rest of us instead of putting in his own two cents?

Of course Jon "Snow" is dead. He had to die to get out of the Night's Watch (as the vow is until death).

Also Jon "Snow" won't be back ... Snow is the name given to bastard children of the North. If Jon is legitimized as a Stark or, more likely, as a Targaryen (given the most popular theory about his parentage) then he'll be back as Jon .

He'll be resurrected by Melisandre ... same setup as in the books.
In the Books she didn't go with Stannis on his Winterfell raid (neither did Stannis' wife or daughter) and was at Castle Black when Jon was stabbed.
If she didn't need to be at Castle Black at that time ... then why did the TV show producers make a point of rushing her back there?

This is a fantasy series, dead is never really dead. I still have hope for Lady Stone Heart. The bannerman without banners are still a big loose ends that the series has essentially dropped.

The seven seasons thing was always ridiculous because we don't even know how many books there'll be. At the end of aDwD Martin was behind in the story (hence the unsatisfying cliff hangers) and had also taken the density of POV characters and stories to an insane degree, partly due to circumstance rather than careful planning. Just killing off half of these would take forever. We can't be at all confident that seven books will be enough.

Plus even if there are only seven ending with aDoS, then the last book would clearly have at least as many big moments and plot points as aSoS so they would absolutely need two seasons to cover that, that's eight seasons already. At the end of the day nine is probably more likely.

I agree. I think there will be more than seven books. There's too much plot to be handled.
Reply
Flag
True.

Also there are going to be at least 7 books and aSoS was already split into 2 seasons. What do people expect? That there going to do 2 books in one season?
Reply

They could end it at 7/8 seasons and have a spin-off/prequel/sequel that explores more of Westeros and Essos or explores the Targaryen dynasty before Robert's Rebellion.
Reply
Flag
Not likely. There is a huge buzz on this show, but the buzz eventually fades. Compare Lord of the Rings to the Hobbit.

The problem with expansive shows, is that they need to pull really REALLY big for them to be worth it. Right now it is, but it won't last forever.

Until the day this show is truly over, be it 7,8 or 10 seasons lol, I will NEVER give up hope for the return of Jon Snow..

Fear no more, Jon won't die. Lord Baeric was ressurrected by a Red Priest like Melisandre four or five times.

I wish it would last forever ;-) Jon Snow will be back. Let's storm the castle with the dragons. Hmm will Jon Snow unite with Daenerys? Is she his aunt? Ive only just started reading the books and haven't gotten that far yet. I've only heard rumors.

Wouldn't surprise me if they split the final book into 2 seaons , that's seems like the thing to do now days whether it be in movies or tv.

If they plan on doing 8 seasons or more why did they rush through the last 2 books. I thought they were leaving things out because they need to get done 7 books in 7 season, which if you've read the books ou know is a ridicous tasks. Either they know that Martin's next two books will be lon and important so things can't be cut or he's lying about 8 season or else why did they cut so many important storylines and characters. If Jon Snow really is dead Kit Harington is sure going out of his way to make it look like he isn't. Staying in Belfast for an extended period of time during filming and refusing pictures.

There could be issues with actors contract. For example if Lady Stoneheart didn't want to sign up for more seasons... You get the idea.

(Just an example, don't know if it's true or not)
Reply

One thing we do know is that the show writers know how this story ends. An they probably both read draft versions of the next two books, so they no the important storylines from the not so important ones. I would dismissed some of the left out characters and stories showing up next season either.
