Game of Thrones giveth and it taketh away. At the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said that the series will not necessarily end after the rumored seven seasons.
"That's definitely open," he said. "I think 'seven seasons and out' has never been the conversation. The question is, how many beyond the seventh season we're going to do. Obviously we're shooting six now and hopefully discussing seven. They're feeling like there are probably two more years after six. I would love them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now."
[Spoilers for Season 5 follow, you know which one we're talking about]
Eight seasons would be at least one more season than there are corresponding books planned in the series written by George R.R. Martin. Despite that heartening news, Lombardo didn't have glad tidings for fans of a certain bastard who was betrayed and stabbed last season. "Dead is dead is dead," he said. "Yes, everything I've seen, heard and read... Jon Snow is indeed dead."
We're sure that will be the end of the conversation. Unless you're a follower of one of those other Thrones religions that believe that "The dead can never die" or that the Red God has the power of resurrection. (Or you've seen those paparazzi pics of Kit Harington in Belfast.)
Game of Thrones returns in spring 2016.
Perhaps this could give them more much needed time to properly focus on and develop certain storylines, but it might be already too late to fix some of the past missteps and omissions. Season 6 should prove whether GoT can still recall what once made it so good (like GRRM's vision in the form of book 6...).
Said: "Jon Snow is indeed dead."
Didn't say: "Kit Harrington isn't going to be on Game of Thrones next season."
So why so much wasted time, dithering and cutting certain characters plots? This show even in its streamlined (which is a oxymoron given the amount of waste ) could and does have enough content and plots to extend the show into a 10th season.
Jon still has to live, has to travel to the east and meet up with Dany.
Same as Arya, she has to have a major fall out with the faceless men, and make her way to Dany
Bran still has to master his skills. Likely teach them to his warg brother and sister and go from there.
Someone has to find Rickon.
There has to be ramifications from the killing of Mycrella.
Someone has to head to Storm's end to pick up tons of Dragon glass.
The various people that have Valyrian swords have to be found and come together.
etc.
But hey, I would like more drama.
Also they need to stop beating up on Sansa and let her become a fully realized character.
Long live Jon [Redacted].
They can't do that in 1 1/2 seasons.
- Will we ever see the winter actually arriving?
- Will Deanerys with her dragons defeat white walkers and maybe that cancels the winter? Or the opposite and everyone just dies turning into ice zombies partying midst the ice age?
- Will Bran become a powerful shaman with magical powers and/or has he just eaten too many mushrooms?
I fear that extra seasons will do no good. How to keep the content interesting so that it does not repeat itself. Audience will not be endlessly impressed by just new ways to kill of characters.Actually those two seasons will be too rushed and they'd have to cut far too much plot.
If Martins' next to books are as long as Dance with Dragons they will have enough material to do at least 4 more books plus another season to address the things they've left out so far.
The difference between Ned and Snow is that Ned's death was integral to the plot and set things in motion while affecting everyone else and the way John died means squat.
It is as if we would be told that Khalisi simply died of thirst while walking in the desert. It's just plain dumb.
Also, consider that I haven't read any of the books and just from watching the show it was easy enough to guess even all the way back in season 1 that
***************
I guess spoiler alert is still a good idea
John Snow is a targeryan
****************
And the show hasn't gotten to it despite throwing off so many hints, meaning it's likely to be a factor at some point, ergo he's coming back.
Doubt if you like, but mark my words: neither of those characters is gonna die. Ever.
They're option are either to take a break (yeah right...), put up loads of fillers, slow down time dramatically (see Dragonball Z) or just make their own stuff.
Also Jon "Snow" won't be back ... Snow is the name given to bastard children of the North. If Jon is legitimized as a Stark or, more likely, as a Targaryen (given the most popular theory about his parentage) then he'll be back as Jon .
He'll be resurrected by Melisandre ... same setup as in the books.
In the Books she didn't go with Stannis on his Winterfell raid (neither did Stannis' wife or daughter) and was at Castle Black when Jon was stabbed.
If she didn't need to be at Castle Black at that time ... then why did the TV show producers make a point of rushing her back there?
Plus even if there are only seven ending with aDoS, then the last book would clearly have at least as many big moments and plot points as aSoS so they would absolutely need two seasons to cover that, that's eight seasons already. At the end of the day nine is probably more likely.
Also there are going to be at least 7 books and aSoS was already split into 2 seasons. What do people expect? That there going to do 2 books in one season?
The problem with expansive shows, is that they need to pull really REALLY big for them to be worth it. Right now it is, but it won't last forever.
(Just an example, don't know if it's true or not)
