A mellow episode was anchored by the introduction of great new characters as Season 3 continued to set things up.
The title of this episode "Dark Wings, Dark Words" is a reference to how most people feel about ravens (which are traditionally black feathered) which often carry messages with bad news. There are two messages delivered by ravens to Robb Stark in this episode, both of which carry bad news.
Olenna Redwyne Tyrell: Yes, all Lannisters are lions. And when a Tyrell farts, it smells like a rose.
Margaery Tyrell: I imagine it must be so exciting to squeeze your finger here and watch something die over there.
Joffrey Baratheon: Could you do it? Could you kill something?
Margaery Tyrell: I don't know, Your Grace. Do you think I could?
Joffrey Baratheon: Yes.
Margaery Tyrell: Would you like to watch me?
Joffrey Baratheon: Yes.
Rickard Karstark: (to Robb Stark about Talisa) I think you lost this war the day you married her.
The song that Thoros of Myr is singing when he's first seen by Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie is "The Rains of Castamere".
