  • It may be the first, but I wouldn't recommend watching it by itself.

    1.5
The first episode introduces two of the main characters and honestly, I didn't feel anything for them. Kei comes off as whiny and self centered. When an old woman asks him directions he gets perturbed because he states he doesn't have time to explain. He snaps at her later on and continues his internal whining about how he doesn't care.

It's an introduction episode, so there is no character development. Kato, the one person in the subway who cares to do anything about the homeless man who falls on the tracks, isn't anymore a better character then Kei. His over the top facial expressions show a man who is conflicted, but not in a relatable way. He closes his eyes and clenches his fist like he is going to burst.

The DVD version shows the deaths of Kei and Kato unedited, beheading and all. Even in death Kei still finds time to whine about how a blonde girl is taking his picture with her camera phone. But instead of being put out of his and the viewer's misery Kei is transported along with Kato in the condo with Gantz.

If this was the only episode I could have seen of Gantz and I had to make a decision then and there to continue watching I wouldn't have continued. I'd would have just put this in the category of anime that really isn't my type. But I did continue watching...moreless
